Jomboy: We Won’t Get in a Bidding War With WFAN, ESPN New York for Aaron Boone

0

In past years, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone would have guest appearances either on WFAN or on ESPN Radio in New York during the season. This year, the Boone guest spot went from traditional radio to Jomboy Media as Jomboy and Jake had Boone on Talkin’ Yanks every week.

Of course, it was a different year for the Yankees as they will fail to make the postseason. With that being said, the Boone effect did help the show in a big way.

On the latest edition of The Morning Meeting (Building Jomboy Media) podcast, Jomboy said that while sometimes the weekly guest spots got tough toward the end of the season, it was still a worthwhile endeavor.

“Talkin’ Yanks had the best couple months ever while they sucked and I think that’s because we had access to Boone and we started being silly again. Boone definitely had a big part of that and just people used the quotes kind of changed it.”

August was the most viewed month of episodes in terms of average views in the history of the show, which is when the Yankees were starting to fade away from playoff contention.

In fact, Jomboy felt the most recent Boone interview was the best episode they had this year because of the familiarity and looseness they all felt.

“We’ve been having fun. I thought that one felt like the best because there was also some good convos of learning as well as just goofiness.”

As for next year, nothing has been decided as to whether or not Talkin’ Yanks will have Boone on again. While Jomboy is interested in running that back, he knows that if the other radio stations want back in, it will be tough to compete with them.

“If ESPN Radio or WFAN all of sudden realize they want back in and we get into a bidding war, we are not going to really do that.”

Megyn Kelly: ‘What Was Fox Thinking Partnering with Univision’ For Debate?

0

Questions have persisted about the decision by Fox News to partner with Univision for the second 2024 Republican Presidential debate. SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly has joined the growing list of detractors.

During The Megyn Kelly Show Thursday, the former Fox News host questioned her former network would choose to partner with an outlet like Univision.

“What on earth was Fox thinking in partnering with Univision? That woman, Ilia Calderón, is a leftist who has been partnering with Jorge Ramos, who — more than anyone — is responsible for the abandoned objectivity approach to Donald Trump and to journalism. They have almost singularly undermined the profession of journalism, more than any other that I can think of off the top of my head,” said Kelly. “And it was intentional. She’s his co-anchor. This is a leftist news organization that’s basically propaganda. They’ve been in partnership with the Clintons. It was like having Hillary Clinton out there this woman’s questions.

“I’ve anchored five presidential debates in the GOP primary field, and you can go out there and it’s perfectly fine to say, ‘Hey, here’s an issue that’s going to be a problem for you if you’re the nominee’. When you get to the general, you can do that. ‘You’re too extreme for moderates on abortion. What say you? Is that true or not?’ That’s okay,” Megyn Kelly continued. “We’ve been doing that from time immemorial. But the issue selection and the way in and out of the questions showed her bias time and time again.”

In reality, the Republican National Committee, not Fox News, was responsible for Univision’s inclusion in the debate Wednesday.

Deion Sanders Thanks Skip Bayless For Giving Black Talent TV Opportunities

0

Fans have their opinions of Skip Bayless. The FS1 host its polarizing, no doubt, but plenty of people currently or formerly in the broadcast industry will speak up when others criticize Bayless.

Add Deion Sanders to that list.

Undisputed originated from Boulder, Colorado on Friday. The Buffaloes’ head football coach stopped by to visit with Bayless, Keyshawn Johnson and Michael Irvin. Before he left and the show went off the air, Sanders wanted to make his feelings about Bayless clear.

“Thank you, because you get heat oftentimes, but you’ve given a lot of us opportunities that people look past and they don’t understand, they don’t recognize,” Coach Prime said to Bayless.

Bayless has been accused of many things. Few in the industry question his ability to recognize talent and give it a platform.

“None of us are perfect, but you have given us, you all know darn well what I’m talking about, so many opportunities, man,” Sanders said to the largely white crowd that had gathered behind the desk to watch the show. “I appreciate you for that.”

Sanders’s sentiments are similar to one expressed by Bayless’s former First Take partner Stephen A. Smith earlier this year. Smith pointed out that there are plenty of Black journalists and former players that owe Bayless a debt of gratitude for helping start or elevate their TV careers.

Bayless told Sanders he loved him and the two embraced as the show went off the air.

Tom Tradup Named Contributing Editor of All Israel News

Salem Radio Network Vice President Tom Tradup has been hired as Contributing Editor of All Israel News, the publication has announced.

In his new role, Tradup will coach the outlet’s writers and editors, and will also provide a weekly column about Israel, the Arab world, and U.S. policy in the Middle East.

“I could not be more thrilled that Tom Tradup has agreed to help All Israel News publish more great content and dramatically expand our traffic, reach, and influence,” founder Joel C. Rosenberg said.

Tradup will continue in his full-time role at Salem Radio Network, in addition to his new role with All Israel News.

“I’m honored to work with Joel Rosenberg and his awesome team. Given that they only launched on September 1, 2020, I’m astonished by just how much they’ve accomplished. They’re breaking stories that are getting picked up by much larger American and Israeli news outlets. They’re getting exclusive interviews with the most powerful leaders in Israel and the Arab world,” said Tradup.

“Also, they’re providing the best daily online coverage of what’s happening with Christians in Israel and the broader Middle East. TBN loves their work and has created a prime-time TV show with Joel as anchor and executive producer. And Joel is being interviewed by Fox News, Newsmax, the Jerusalem Post, and so many other major media outlets because of his expertise and unique perspective on the region.

“Clearly, the Lord is doing something very special here, and at this pivotal moment in history, I’m really looking forward to helping Joel and his colleagues build on this successful foundation and create exciting new content that educates Evangelical Christians about what’s happening in Israel and the region from a distinctly Biblical worldview.”

Ken Carman: People Bored With Thursday Night Football ‘Just Going to Tweet About Al Michaels’

0

Social media may enjoy ripping Al Michaels for not showing a lot of enthusiasm on Thursday Night Football, but Ken Carman appreciates the broadcast legend’s honesty.

Friday morning on 92.3 The Fan, the Cleveland sports talker listened back to audio of Michaels casually promoting next week’s game between the winless Chicago Bears and the Washington Commanders, who just lost a game by 34 points. Fans online began mocking him as disinterested or too old.

“I don’t like ripping on Michaels. I think he’s a legend. I’m not going to rip Al Michaels,” Carman said. “I think that people are just looking for something entertaining, so they’re just going to tweet about Al Michaels because it’s a 27-3 football game at that time. But Al Michaels…the guy called the 80 Olympics. You think he’s going to sit there and try to put lipstick on that hog of next week’s game between Chicago and Washington?”

Thursday night’s game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers was not particularly close. Carman said that Michaels could be forgiven for not sounded particularly connected during the broadcast.

He joked that while his radio partner, Anthony Lima, would be happy to oversell a bad game, Al Michaels isn’t going to do that. He wondered why that is a problem for fans.

“Ryan Day gets to be honest, Coach Prime could be honest, Dan Lanning. Everybody can be honest. Why can’t Al Michaels be honest? Let Al Michaels be honest. He could not wait to get out of there. And, by the way, that’s fine.”

Lima noted that Michaels is reportedly getting $15 million per year from Amazon. Carman said that does not change his mind.

“He deserves every penny of it. I don’t mind him taking that, And I don’t mind him telling you the absolute God honest truth. ‘I’m a legend of 78 years old, and if you don’t like what I have to say about this football team, to hell with you. I don’t care.’”

Rob Brown Moves To Mornings on The Fan Upstate

1

Rob Brown is on the move in South Carolina’s Upstate region. He announced this morning that his show is moving into morning drive on The Fan Upstate.

With Damon Amendolara announcing his exit from CBS Sports Radio earlier this week, it left a hole for the station to fill. Operations Manager Mark Hendrix chose making drive time local for Greenville and Spartanburg residents over Maggie & Perloff, which moves to mornings on the network.

“Our big boss down the hallway, Mark Hendricks, called Lonzo and I down into the the real meeting room,” Brown told listeners Friday morning. “Not even the office like the actual meeting room, and he offered us the opportunity to become the new morning drive show here on The Fan Upstate.”

It is the second time slot change for Brown since he first joined the station in March of 2020. He was initially hired to be on from noon until 3. When the station dropped ESPN Radio for CBS Sports Radio, his show moved to 9 am to noon to make room for Jim Rome.

Brown called morning and afternoon drive “the two crown jewel spots” of a radio lineup. Being elevated to one of those spots comes with meaning that is not lost on him.

“It is something that, no matter what market you are in, by earning one of those two spots, it tells you that you have become not just a voice in that community, but an important one or a respected one,” he said.

Brown’s show includes producer Lonzo Writesel. He is making the move to mornings along with Brown on Monday, October 2.

Morning drive will come with a little more work. The Rob Brown Show will add an hour and run from 6-10 am. CBS Sports Radio’s Reiter Than You will slide into Brown’s old time slot on The Fan.

Brian Kilmeade: Debate Candidates Could Learn From Radio Hosts

0

One of the biggest takeaways from the second 2024 Republican Presidential debate was candidates speaking over one another, with some observers questioning if the moderators lost control or not. Fox News host Brian Kilmeade argued the candidates could learn something from radio hosts about the issue.

During an appearance on 77 WABC’s Sid and Friends in the Morning, Kilmeade told Sid Rosenberg that even though the candidates were given the rules, they still continually talked over one another. He believes it shows a lack of care for what the audience consumes from the debate, and equated the situation to a radio show.

“We do this every day,” Brian Kilmeade said. “You’re gonna go engage, you’ll bring people in to Sid and Friends, and they disagree with you. But at one point when you’re arguing, you have to think about the listener and you have to be quiet. ‘Okay, listen, we’re talking over each other. I’m gonna lay out after maybe five seconds’.

“These guys didn’t stop for about a minute and a half, where we couldn’t make out one word that was said. Nobody had a sense that nothing that we were seeing was coming across. And I was astounded by that.”

Rosenberg agreed, calling it “very amateurish”.

Nielsen Study: NFL Games Just as Dominant on Radio as TV

0

We know that the NFL dominates television, but a new study from Nielsen shows the league’s radio ratings are no less impressive.

Inside Radio published the results of the survey, which show that if radio audiences were measured by show (as TV audiences are) as opposed to day part, NFL games are outperforming the highest rated stations in markets around the country. The data used reflected listening for persons 25-54.

During the 2022 season, Patriots games on 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston scored a 23.9 share on average. That is significantly higher than the average share for Magic 106.7. The Audacy AC station topped the market during that time frame with a 7.4.

Even in what was a mediocre season for the team, New Englanders still flock to Patriots broadcasts in numbers that dwarf anything else on radio.

The same was true in Pittsburgh. There, Nielsen compared Steelers’ radio broadcasts on WDVE and ESPN Pittsburgh to the most popular morning shows in the market.

Randy Baumann, who is also heard on WDVE, leads the way with Men 25-54 with an AQH rating of 1.1. Steelers games drew an AQH rating of 1.9 with the same audience.

As you might expect, the best team delivered the best results in the study. In Kansas City, the Super Bowl Champion Chiefs averaged a 39.8 share with persons 25-54. That is nearly a 500% increase over market leader KC 102.1, which averaged a 6.8 share with the same audience.

Amongst men, the share was even larger. Chiefs’ games on 106.5 The Wolf averaged an astounding 46.1 share with many games topping a 50 share according to Nielsen.

“While these examples are far from a complete analysis of the NFL games on the radio, it does shed light on the dominance of the NFL on radio,” John Snyder, Nielsen Senior VP/Sales Director says. “Just because a fan can’t be staring into a screen during game time doesn’t mean he or she isn’t following along. And if broadcast radio pivoted to selling shows rather than dayparts, it’s a safe bet that like TV, the top-rated shows would largely consist of play-by-play broadcasts.”

NAB CEO Curtis Legeyt Applauds Court Decision to Complete Quadrennial Review

0

A U.S. Court of Appeals has handed down a decision providing the FCC 90 days to complete the 2018 quadrennial review. The NAB has shared their pleasure with the decision.

“NAB applauds the Court for recognizing the vital importance of the FCC completing its long overdue 2018 quadrennial review. Today, broadcasters’ service to communities across the country is imperiled by the Commission’s failure to modernize its decades-old media ownership rules,” NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt said. “This ruling is an important step to compel a review that the record makes clear is necessary to allow local broadcasters to more fairly compete and deliver our trusted, locally-focused programming in a transformed media marketplace.”

Earlier this year, the NAB threatened to sue the FCC if it did not respond to a request to postpone the 2022 review until the 2018 review was completed. FCC Jessica Rosenworcel subsequently shared that changes to the commission’s ownership rules were still a work in progress, despite the legal challenges facing the quadrennial review.

However, the broadcaster group has shared its intention of working together with the FCC to find a resolution.

“NAB looks forward to actively engaging with the FCC to forge a path forward and reinforce the essential service provided by free, local broadcast stations in communities across the country.”

College Football Playoff ‘Not Averse’ to Streaming Exclusives in Next TV Deal

0

Football innovation on the field tends to trickle up. What works at lower levels eventually finds its way into the NFL. When it comes to the business side of the game though, things usually go the other way. That could play out in the next television contract for the College Football Playoff.

The consensus is that conferences want multiple television partners involved with the postseason tournament. CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock says he has already received multiple proposals.

Taking a page from the NFL, who announced earlier this year that one of its 2024 playoff games will be exclusive to Peacock, Hancock says that the CFP is open to putting some games behind a paywall on a streaming service.

“Streaming adds another element,” he told ESPN’s Heather Dinich. “We are not averse to streaming some of the games. I wouldn’t expect us to stream all of them, but right now nothing’s off the table.”

Right now, stakeholders have pressed pause on finding a new TV deal. With one of the five power conferences being down to just two teams, the belief is that everyone would be in a better position by waiting to see what becomes of the Pac-12.

Hancock says there is already plenty of interest though. He told Dinich “that five television sent executives to make presentations”. Others have expressed interest, but are yet to make a formal proposal.

This is the final season of the College Football Playoff’s original four-team format. Beginning next season, the field expands to twelve teams. The current TV deal, which makes the CFP an ESPN exclusive, expires after the 2025 season.
