Travis Rodgers: ‘I’m a Little Skeptical’ of Netflix Sports Documentaries

Netflix on Wednesday released a trailer for an upcoming four-part docuseries on soccer legend David Beckham, and 710 ESPN host Travis Rodgers isn’t sure how to feel about it.

On Travis & Sliwa on Wednesday, Rodgers explained that on the one hand, he’s going to check the series out so that he can potentially learn something new about a superstar athlete he wasn’t all that familiar with. On the other hand, not having that familiarity will prevent him from maybe looking at the show with a little more critical eye.

“I don’t know anything about him other than he’s wildly famous and married to a Spice Girl,” he said. “That’s really all I know about him. So I won’t have the base of knowledge to say, ‘Ehh that’s not quite how that went.'”

Travis added that other Netflix series like Untold has made him leery of having high expectations.

“They’re so deeply flawed that I just can assume that this one will be too,” he said. “I’m a little skeptical when that brand is on it, what’s actually in it.”

Rodgers explained that he would much rather have a series that tells stories from different angles rather than perhaps a one-sided story from one person.

“We’ve entered this phase of sports documentaries where the participants are involved in them I’m instantly skeptical of what’s in it,” he said. “Because do you think Michael Jordan would have ever done something like The Last Dance if he didn’t have sign-off on it? Of course not he’s Michael Jordan and he probably doesn’t need to. But the biographies that we see of famous people that are not just unauthorized hatchet jobs but that take a story and tell it from this side, that side and the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.”

104.5 ESPN Partnering with LSU, LHSAA for Suicide Prevention Walk

104.5 ESPN in Baton Rouge is getting out in the community to raise money for a cause – suicide prevention.

The station, LSU and the Louisiana High School Athletic Association have teamed up to organize the Out of the Darkness Walk on October 7. The walk is going to benefit The Rain Will Bring Flowers Foundation.

The foundation was started by the family of Owen Tabor, a young man who took his own life earlier this year. Owen was a high school football player and a devoted LSU fan. The family began the foundation as a way to help make an impact on suicide awareness and prevention.

Carl Dukes: ‘MLB Should be Ashamed’ if TV Doesn’t Give Ronald Acuna Jr Aaron Judge Treatment

No one in the history of Major League Baseball has ever posted 40 home runs and 70 stolen bases in the same season. Ronald Acuna Jr. is closing in on that very accomplishment and Carl Dukes thinks it should be celebrated beyond Atlanta.

Wednesday on 92.9 The Game, Dukes said he wants to see Acuna get the same treatment from ESPN and Major League Baseball that Aaron Judge got last year.

“I think because this is such a special milestone, when he gets to approaching 70 [stolen bases], they should be breaking in and showing Braves games and showing Ronald Acuna getting ready to break this milestone,” he said on Dukes & Bell.

His partner Mike Bell doesn’t see it happening. He says what Judge did last year was actually insignificant. It wasn’t a record or a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. ESPN was only breaking into other sports to show Aaron Judge’s at-bats because Judge plays for the Yankees. 

“No, they’re not going to break it,” he said. “Maybe MLB Network will do that, sure, for the nerds. But I mean, for the casual fan? Unfortunately, we’re not going to get the juice.”

Dukes was shocked to hear his partner dismiss the idea. He said it would be a major failing of baseball’s stakeholders not to take advantage of the moment.

“Like, seriously, MLB should be ashamed of themselves if they’re not going to show ‘Oh, by the way, ladies and gentlemen, Ronald Acuna is about to do something that no one in the history of baseball has ever done. Let’s look. Let’s take a live look in.’”

Frank Morano: ‘We Don’t Have Trial By Media Anymore, We Have Trial By Social Media’

The demonetization of Russell Brand by YouTube continues to be a hot-button topic in conservative media circles. 77 WABC host Frank Morano believes the situation shows a shift in how we view certain topics.

During The Other Side of Midnight Wednesday, Morano argued that topics are no longer decided in the court of public opinion. Instead, they’re decided on social media.

“When you could just say anything and have it printed in the newspaper, or put out there on TV, that’s trial by media,” Morano said. “But unfortunately, particularly with respect to sexual assault allegations since the Me Too movement began, we don’t even have trial by media anymore. We have trial by social media.”

Morano then claimed the precedent set by YouTube in its decision to demonetize Brand can’t be ignored.

“We are now in a place and a time where your livelihood could be threatened, where the corporate overseers of the internet which used to be a place where you could go to be an independent media creator, which used to be a place where you could go to get alternative views out there that weren’t being covered in the corporate media,” Frank Morano continued.

“We are now living in a place and in a time where even if you are convicted of nothing, they can demonetize you and deplatform you.”

ESPN Decision Not to Show Nick Chubb Replay ‘Out of Respect to the Viewers’

The decision made not to show a replay of Nick Chubb’s injury on ABC’s Monday Night Football broadcast has been met with scrutiny. The network did not offer a detailed explanation for the decision.

“We viewed the replays in our production truck immediately after the play and decided to use discretion out of respect to the viewers and Nick Chubb,” an ESPN spokesperson said when asked by The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch how the decision was made.

The spokesperson added that the decision did not come down from network brass. It was made onsite by the Monday Night Football production crew.

On the broadcast, Troy Aikman revealed that the injury was “as bad as you can imagine” after Joe Buck told the audience that he had been informed that the network had decided not to replay the interview.

While some members of the public praised the decision, some sports media professionals have had the opposite reaction, including Dan Patrick, who said ABC had a duty to the viewers to show a replay to put the sport and the event in context.

Marcellus Wiley has ‘No Love & No Respect’ for Stephen A. Smith’s Ethics

Marcellus Wiley doesn’t want to hear Stephen A. Smith caping for Shannon Sharpe. He said its hard to overlook the hypocrisy of the ESPN star saying it is unfair to see Sharpe “pushed out” of Undisputed when he did the same thing to Max Kellerman on First Take.

On his podcast, Never Shut Up this week, Wiley addressed the comments Smith made about Kellerman on The Joe Budden Show. 

Smith said that he has no ill-will towards Kellerman but did not like hosting First Take with him. He claimed that his ultimatum to ESPN management that one of them had to go was about the show not resonating with audiences the way it used to.

“He got Max fired. Put off the show,” Wiley said. “It’s hard to say. Stephen A felt threatened point blank. Ain’t no way around it.”

Wiley says that part of Stephen A. Smith’s problem with Terrell Owens is that Owens touched a nerve with his joke that Kellerman sounded Blacker than Smith. Wiley said that for whatever reason, it is something Smith remains sensitive about.

He also took Smith to task for claiming that he knows the story behind Sharpe’s ouster from FS1 but cannot tell it. Wiley says Smith has a more compelling story to tell and that people just want to hear him own up to  why Kellerman had to go.

“I still got love for Stephen A,” Wiley said. “At the same time, you know me, I love the truth more than any of these fools, and the truth is, you cannot attack Max’s credentials.”

He added that for all of the talk about Kellerman never being the right fit for First Take, he can remember working with Kellerman on ESPN Los Angeles and hearing Smith call to try and convince Kellerman to move to New York to join First Take. 

“Grandma always said ‘can’t makes sense out of nonsense.’ Let me say this. Stephen A gets a salute from all, especially me, because I respect his work ethic. But right now, and a lot of people are seeing it right before our very eyes, no love and no respect for your ethics.”

Eric Von Haessler: Reaction to Russell Brand Allegations Makes Me Question My Radio Future

Comedian Russell Brand has been accused of sexual assault and rape by four women from his past. In response, YouTube has demonetized his popular channel, and the BBC has removed content featuring Brand. 95.5 WSB afternoon host Eric Von Haessler believes the response has been overblown.

During The Von Haessler Doctrine Tuesday, a conversation about the reaction came up, with Von Haessler admitting that the entire situation makes him question his future working in corporate radio.

“This is something I have to wrestle with. Now, when I see what corporate media is doing with the Russell Brand story — again, of course, people need to be heard — but there’s also something called due process,” Von Haessler said. “The coverage of Russell Brand is as if we all know he’s guilty. They don’t say that but they don’t have to.”

Eric Von Haessler continued by questioning whether he was culpable in the reaction to Brand’s alleged misdeeds.

“There was a time in this country where an American in their DNA just understood that due process is important. With this one, you’ve got allegations all 10 years or older and zero evidence and then a mountain of corporate media saying this is just the worst guy ever. And that’s what led me to my kind of epiphany.

“My sort of epiphany or just question to myself is: I have a year and a half left. Do I want to stay inside of this? Is just being inside of corporate media part of the problem? Because this is not fairness,” Von Haessler said before mentioning that both Bill Clinton and Joe Biden were accused of sexual misconduct but weren’t treated the way Brand was.

“Am I part of the problem for being inside of that? It may be time just to go underground and accept whatever level of income that brings.”

Keith Olbermann: Rachel Maddow Failed By Not Disparaging Kristen Welker Interview

The debut episode of Kristen Welker moderating Meet the Press has been widely panned by both sides of the political aisle. Former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann believes current MSNBC host Rachel Maddow should have been the voice of reason, but failed.

During his Countdown podcast Tuesday, Olbermann argued that Maddow had the chance to be a defacto moral compass for MSNBC, but instead of pushing back against her corporate bosses, simply towed the party line.

“Guess what? I was not wrong. She did not say boo about the deplorable NBC and MSNBC Meet the Press ‘interview’ of Trump,” Olbermann said. “NBC is itself investigating whether somebody on the staff of Meet the Press assured the Trump campaign there would not be any serious fact-checking. So he lied and lied and lied and Kristen Welker asked him touchy-feely Dateline questions about how it feels when he sees his mug shot.”

In regards to the purported investigation, Keith Olbermann said the questions persist, but not where they should be.

“The questions are being asked at 30 Rock, they’re just not being asked to on the networks of NBC by compliant employees. There was a sad irony last night, Rachel began her show with a monologue about how little things like being asked by a friend to be a dog sitter was a good sign that you were a good person and could be dependent upon and less time on the subject of making at least some noise of protest about her employers rolling over for Trump prostituting her network and standing up against the truth. She had the chance to be that person and she failed.”

Many devoted college football fans make a habit of watching multiple games across networks throughout the season, along with the pregame shows and other festivities. As the sport approaches its fourth week of regular-season play, people are starting to make their plans for where they will watch Deion Sanders’ undefeated Colorado Buffaloes taking on Oregon at 3:30 p.m. EST/12:30 p.m. PST on ABC. Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo revealed on Wednesday’s edition of First Take that he will be alone at his home this weekend, as his wife is away. He already has his routine planned out in full.

Starting the day on Saturday, he sees that the forecast in the New York metropolitan area is calling for rain, which will prohibit him from playing golf or tennis. He will sit down, make an early cocktail and take half of a gummy ahead of the Florida State matchup against the Clemson Tigers. When the clock strikes 3:25, Russo says he will be “sauced” and put a call into his friend, Fat Rob, who he described at the start of the segment.

“He’s my buddy [and] a former priest in the Vatican. He lived there for five years,” Russo said. “For five years, he was up there when they would do the smoke when they would see who the next priest was – that was him – the next pope.”

Russo nearly gave out Fat Rob’s phone number live on the air and described how his call would sound on Sunday. By this point, ESPN analyst Marcus Spears and featured commentator Stephen A. Smith were consumed with both laughter and disbelief.

“Where am I?,” Spears said with an incredulous, yet countenance evoking a sense of captivation.

“‘Rob, you know what, what the hell. I can’t root for Oregon; I’ll pretend on TV,” Russo said. “Put 10 dimes on Colorado and Deion; let’s win the game.’ By 3:25, I’ll be sitting down with my shorts; little T-shirt; cocktail [and] I’ll have the other half of the gummy.”

“You save it for later!?,” First Take host Molly Qerim exclaimed. “I thought you were just rationing it.”

Russo then conveyed that he hopes Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit, ESPN’s lead college football broadcast booth, would be announcing the Colorado-Oregon game. No one on the air voiced, however, that it will be Joe Tessitore and Jesse Palmer on that matchup.

Nonetheless, Russo is excited for a day of college football to himself while his wife is on a road trip, something he previously spoke about when First Take was live from the US Open earlier this month.

“I want to be clear – you’re doing this all by yourself?,” Qerim asked. “You’re just going to hang out by yourself and do all of this?”

“I’m an only child – I’m my favorite company,” Russo replied.

Connecticut GOP Reportedly Eyeing Sage Steele For Congress

How does Representative Sage Steele sound? It reportedly sounds pretty good to Connecticut Republicans.

Daily Ructions reports that GOP donors in Connecticut and DC are looking at the former SportsCenter star as a viable candidate for the state’s 5th Congressional District. Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post has confirmed that “exploratory conversations have occurred.”

Steele has always been outspoken in her conservative politics. It made her a darling of Republicans in 2021 after she sounded off against ESPN’s vaccine mandate on Jay Cutler’s podcast. 

She sued ESPN claiming the network violated her freedom of speech in forcing her to apologize for those comments and for making light of Barack Obama identifying as a Black man. The lawsuit was settled last month and Steele announced that she was leaving the network “so I can exercise my first amendment rights more freely.”

Follwing her official exit, Steele’s first interview was with Megyn Kelly. She described examples of ways ESPN showed its liberal bias and her colleagues retaliated against her for not sharing them.

Dana Hunsinger Benbow of the Indianapolis Star reached out to Steele about the rumor.

“No comment on this,” Steele responded, “but I appreciate you asking.”

Connecticut’s fifth district includes parts of Fairfield, Hartford, Litchford and New Haven Counties. Jahana Hayes has won the district in each of the last three elections, but in 2022, her victory was very slim. The district has not been represented by a Republican since 2007.
