ESPN Gets 3 Monday Night Double-Headers, Multiple ESPN+ Exclusive NFL Games

The full 2023 NFL regular season schedule has been revealed, the first of the new 10-year media national media rights agreement between the league and various partners, including ESPN. This year’s slate of 25 games is the most The Walt Disney Company has ever presented – which includes 20 on Monday Night Football – and weeks where there are multiple games set to be played on the same night.

In Week 2, 3, and 14, ABC and ESPN+ will be the broadcast home of Monday Night Football matchups – complete with a second booth that will reportedly include lead college football play-by-play announcer Chris Fowler. The analysts in that booth were Louis Riddick and Dan Orlovsky, and there has been no word on whether or not they are expected to return.

The start times for the games in Week 2 and 3 will be 7:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. EST, respectively. During Week 14, both games – Titans-Dolphins (ESPN+) and Packers-Giants (ABC) simultaneously start at 8:15 p.m. EST. The network will also televise one of three Christmas Day games – a matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. Additionally, Week 18 will include a doubleheader with matchups to be determined at a later date, all airing on ABC, ESPN and ESPN+.

It was also revealed that Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli, colloquially known as the ManningCast, will return for its third season. While its full schedule has yet to be announced, it is known that the first broadcast will take place in Week 1 when the network televises quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ debut for the New York Jets as they take on the Buffalo Bills.

ESPN+ will also present an exclusive international game between the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars from Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, Oct. 1.

Once the season turns to Week 12, Monday Night Football will have flex scheduling for the first time, meaning it has the ability to change the time of a Sunday afternoon matchup to Monday night with a minimum of 12 days notice.

Criticism for CNN continues to pour in after what has been labeled a “disastrous” town hall event with former President Donald Trump happened Wednesday night. MSNBC host Joy Reid is the latest to air her grievances with the network and also criticized moderator Kaitlan Collins in the process.

“CNN wants desperately to be the new home for Republican viewers. They want to be the new Fox. They want to move to the right. It’s clear that the goal is to make it a friendly place for MAGA. That’s very clear,” Reid said during Thursday’s The ReidOut.

She then turned her attention toward Collins, arguing that her time working for The Daily Caller — a digital outlet co-founded by conservative firebrand Tucker Carlson — shows a political bias.

“Let’s remember she comes from the Daily Caller. She comes from a conservative outlet that Tucker Carlson used to own, so she’s not a liberal,” Reid continued.

Reid’s comments about Collins came after strong criticism from colleague Mehdi Hasan. Hasan argued that Collins simply “wasn’t good enough” in her role.

“If you’re going up with Trump, prime time television, the biggest interview of your life… Where was the prep?” questioned Hasan. “Why were you not prepared for his lies? We knew what Trump would do. This is not 2016. We haven’t gone back in time in a time machine. There’s no excuse for not knowing that Trump’s going to steamroll you, that Trump’s going to verbally abuse you. When he said, ‘You’re a nasty person’, it was almost like, tick. I was waiting for that. There was no way he was going to go through the night without insulting her.

“At one point she says to him, ‘It wasn’t a rigged election. You can’t keep saying that all night long.’ Yes, he can! And he did!” an increasingly frustrated Hasan said. “And CNN helped him, and you had no plan for it.”

John Kincade Diagnosed With Colon Cancer, Steps Away From 97.5 The Fanatic

John Kincade is taking a break from his 97.5 the Fanatic morning show. He took to Twitter on Friday morning to reveal that he has been diagnosed with colon cancer.

“After a brief period of illness where I just wasn’t feeling right, I finally went to the doctor and it ends up that I was having internal bleeding,” he said in a Twitter video. “And so I had the endoscopy and colonoscopy scheduled, and upon inspection, I found out that I have colon cancer. So I will be exiting the show for a few weeks.” 

Kincade was upbeat in the video. He revealed that he already has surgery scheduled for Monday and is expecting a positive outcome.

He praised his wife and daughter for their support. He also made two requests of his audience. First, he said that any thoughts and prayers would be appreciated. The second, was a bit of advice.

“Make sure you get a colonoscopy. I had had one a few years back and I had one now and found out I had colon cancer.“

John Kincade has dealt with colon cancer before. Still, he does not seem worried about this being the end of his radio career or even an extended absence from 97.5 The Fanatic. He promised listeners that he would be back in “a few weeks.”

“I will keep you up to date on everything after the fact, but I appreciate any prayers and support you can send in my direction, and I look forward to being back with you on the air soon so we can celebrate everything that’s great in Philadelphia sports,” he said. “Until then, much love.”

Kaitlan Collins Addresses Fallout From CNN Town Hall with Donald Trump

CNN This Morning anchor Kaitlan Collins addressed the polarizing town hall event with Donald Trump Thursday evening.

On CNN Primetime — which is reportedly going to be her new television timeslot after she was offered a new contract with the network earlier this week — Collins pointed to the elephant in the room.

“About last night,” Collins began. “The 70 minutes I spent on stage in New Hampshire with former president Donald Trump was a major inflection point in the Republican party’s search for its nominee and potentially the starting line for America’s next presidential race.

“It’s important to remember that he is, right now, the GOP frontrunner, a race that he is running, as noted, while being criminally indicted, found civilly liable and under investigation for everything from his handling of classified documents to his business empire,” Collins said.

Collins has received mixed reviews for her work as the event’s moderator. Some critics have argued Collins was too demonstrative in her pushbacks on Trump, arguing that she seemed adversarial in her approach and tone.

Meanwhile, supporters have claimed she was in a difficult position with the former President and the format of the event did not lend itself to rampant real-time fact-checking.

Al McCoy Signs Off As Radio Voice Of Phoenix Suns For Last Time

Al McCoy can enjoy retirement. The Phoenix Suns were eliminated from the NBA Playoffs Thursday night, bringing an end to their 2022-23 season and to McCoy’s career as the voice of the team on the radio.

Following the Suns’ loss to the Denver Nuggets in Game 5 of their second-round playoff series, McCoy took a moment before the postgame show to acknowledge that it would indeed be his last game on the radio broadcast.

“I think our listeners know that this is my final broadcast for the Phenix Suns after 51 amazing years, and I just want to say a couple of things,” he started.

He started by thanking his broadcast colleagues Jon Bloom and Tim Kempton, delivering messages of support to each as they continue their broadcasting careers without him. Al McCoy also shouted out Walt Ellis, who has been the longtime technical director of the Suns’ radio broadcast.

Some fans may have been surprised by the next group McCoy shouted out.

“I want to say something special to a special group of people,” he said. “Through the years, I’ve become friends with so many sightless people. And you can’t understand what radio and sports radio broadcasting means to these folks. And I’ve gotten to know so many sightless people that depend on our radio broadcasts, and I’ve known people that are in hospitals and in veterans hospitals and shut ins. And I just want to thank all of those folks that depend on radio for letting me be a part of their lives.”

McCoy announced earlier this year that it would be his last season with the Phoenix Suns. Arizona Sports 98.7’s Dan Bickley had hoped that the team could send McCoy out with a title. Unfortunately, that will not be the case.

Al McCoy did not let that ruin the evening.

“I just want to say thank you for 51 wonderful years and allowing me to bring the story of the Suns in the NBA to you.”

The CNN town hall event with Donald Trump remains the focal point of the news media industry, with the network’s Anderson Cooper chiming in with an opinion that could surprise some.

During Anderson Cooper 360 Thursday, the longtime CNN host defended the decision to host Trump for the first time in seven years.

“Before we begin with tonight’s broadcast, I want to say something about what we witnessed at last night’s town hall,” Cooper said to begin Thursday’s program. “Many of you have expressed deep anger and disappointment. Many of you are upset that someone who attempted to destroy our democracy was invited to sit on a stage in front of a crowd of Republican voters to answer questions and predictably, continued to spew lie after lie after lie. And I get it. It was disturbing.”

After mentioning Trump’s conduct in calling Kaitlan Collins “a nasty person”, Cooper reminded the audience that the former President is the Republican frontrunner, and is “running hard”. He was understanding of critics but rebuked the central point of their complaints.

“You have every right to be outraged today and angry and never watch this network again. But do you think staying in your silo and only listening to people you agree with is going to make that person go away? If we all only listen to those we agree with, it may actually do the opposite,” admitted Cooper. “If lies are allowed to go unchecked, as imperfect as our ability to check them is on a stage in real-time, those lies continue and those lies spread.

“If you’re angry or upset, I understand, but you have the power to do something about it. You can actually get involved. You can make a difference, whatever side of the aisle you’re on. After last night, none of us can say, ‘I didn’t know what’s out there. I didn’t know what’s coming’.”

The NFL’s schedule came out and FOX is very happy with the slate of games for its America’s Game of the Week package. With four games scheduled for both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys, the NFC East will be well represented as usual. 

“As promised, FOX NFL is still very clearly an NFC package,” Michael Mulvihill, the network’s EVP, Head of Strategy and Analytics said in a tweet. “Why do we care so much about this when the AFC has so many good QBs?”

Appropriately, Mulvihill’s answer explained that FOX’s strategy is about the numbers. 

He listed three reasons the network prioritizes the NFC:

  • There are 30 million more people in NFC markets
  • There is a $2 trillion-plus gap in local economic activity between NFC and AFC markets
  • Fox owns its affiliates in 14 of the 16 NFC markets

The only two FOX affiliates in NFC markets that are not owned by the network are WJZY in Charlotte and WVUE in New Orleans, which are owned by NexStar and Gray Television respectively. 

The NFL divided its Sunday afternoon games into conference-specific television packages in 1970. FOX has been the rights holder to the NFC package since 1994.

On Thursday, Fox News host Jesse Watters claimed that CNN violated its fundamental principle by featuring Donald Trump in a town hall event in New Hampshire, which both Republican voters and some undecided individuals attended.

The primetime host emphasized that the network’s most significant error was discussing subjects they believed were crucial to their audience.

“Right off the bat, they got Trump to talk about the past and not the future, they knew he was going to take the bait, and he did,” said Watters. “Now, if Trump wants to talk about 2020, there’s plenty to talk about, but you can’t get lost in the weeds, and you have to move it from 2020 to 2024.”

After CNN’s New Hampshire town hall event with former President Donald Trump, some groups expressed dissatisfaction with the network. Nevertheless, CNN CEO Chris Licht remained unfazed by the criticism.

“After the 2020 election, CNN wanted to talk about January 6th,” said Watters. “We got stolen elections, January 6th, next came the rape case. It doesn’t hurt Trump. You can’t ‘Me too’ him. They’ve tried. If you want to open up, the party of Epstein, Weinstein, Bill Clinton, and Hunter Biden is enough. You’re giving the former President the opportunity to trivialize it and tell stories. CNN walked right into that and didn’t even see it coming.”

Watters stated that they subject themselves to scrutiny whenever CNN makes a weak political accusation against Trump. “CNN tried to play gotcha the whole night,” he added.

Jesse Kelly: Kaitlan Collins ‘Too Stupid and Meek’ to Match Donald Trump

During an appearance on the Clay & Buck Show on Thursday, Jesse Kelly expressed his opinion that CNN was not doing Kaitlan Collins any favors by placing her in the same arena as former President Donald Trump. Collins hosted a town hall Wednesday in New Hampshire, which was attended by a live audience of Republican voters.

“I’m a big believer that you set your employees up for success,” Kelly said. “Kaitlan Collins is like an adorable little puppy, she’s way too stupid and meek to stand on stage with Trump and not get dominated. Of course, Trump is going to dominate that little mouse.”

“America was served very well by what we did last night,” said CNN CEO Chris Licht, indicating that he remains unbothered by the backlash the network has faced following its New Hampshire town hall event with former President Donald Trump.

“I hate Kaitlan Collins, and I hate CNN. I legitimately felt bad for her. That chick has no chance against a dominant personality like Trump,” said Kelly. “He’s got ten times the IQ that she does.”

Clay Travis noted that CNN had negotiated with the Trump team to arrange for the former president to address a friendly hometown audience, which welcomed him with open arms and a standing ovation as he made his inaugural appearance.

“It made it such an optical disaster for CNN that I think that’s why they cut it short,” he added.

“CNN set [Kaitlan] Collins up for failure. The Trump team had to have negotiated some kind of thing with the audience because you know CNN would have loaded up the audience with a bunch of communists in there.”

Multimedia personality Dan Bongino thinks Tucker Carlson joining Twitter will create more competition among social media platforms. Bongino is a part-owner of Rumble and hosts a popular podcast.

He shared his thoughts on Carlson’s decision not to use Rumble for his brand launch, stating that it didn’t bother him.

“I’m proud to be a part of Rumble, and I see this as a great thing for Rumble, Twitter, and several alternative free speech platforms out there,” said Bongino. “I think a bunch of people out there read this the wrong way as something like ‘Dan must be upset’. This is glorious. This is great. People understand that video content can be displayed on parallel economy free speech systems and that there will be a revenue path forward.”

Following a report that alleges Tucker Carlson sought the support of figures like Brett Favre and Megyn Kelly to pressure Fox News to release him from his contract, Carlson made his announcement about moving his show to Twitter. Kelly advised Carlson to breach his contract and provoke a legal dispute with the network to prevent them from silencing him.

“This only benefits all of us,” said Bongino. “There is no downside to this at all. I’m quadrupling down on Rumble now. This is fantastic for us. I wouldn’t cover it like this if there were some fake drama. This is a great day.”

According to reports, Fox News wants to keep Tucker Carlson under contract to prevent him from launching a rival show. However, Carlson has allegedly received tempting offers from several conservative media organizations and even explored working alongside Elon Musk.

Bongino expressed feeling vindicated by Carlson’s announcement, as he initially had doubts when he became involved with video streaming and distribution.

“I put a lot of money and time into It, but I had a really bad feeling that one day they were going to take us out,” said Bongino. “After January 6, they almost did. We got up, we dusted off, and now we are seeing the flowering of this new media revolution. Old media was broadcast news, new media after that was cable, and those days aren’t over. They are still here, but now there’s a flowering group of podcasts and video content on Rumble, YouTube, and Twitter. These are all going to be massive companies moving forward.”
