What is the Consultant Sales Method and When Does it Make Sense?

0

While the consultant sales technique has many benefits, there are also some potential drawbacks. It isn’t right for every salesperson or situation. I was never a fan of the method for newer salespeople and using it when an intelligent rate and package of spots will do for now.

What is The Consultant Sale?

When we sit down with a client, go over an in-depth CNA, and then return to present annual marketing campaigns, that’s a consultant sell. When we present unique insights and custom solutions- nothing off the package deck- that meets the client’s specific needs. We do extensive client research and consult with many other people at the station. It is all to be the trusted rep who gets it and knows all. If you know when and how to execute that, you may have a job in Memphis for you.

The Rookie’ Consultant.

How can a new AE act as a radio advertising consultant? It’s not easy to provide custom solutions to a specific marketing challenge for a business when they just graduated from 1 month of video training. Why would you wind up a new person with six stations, spot, digital, NTR, endorsements, play-by-play, production, and internal paperwork, and turn them loose to be a consultant on all that? None of us are experts in all those subjects!

Consider teaching the rookie how to make radio work for an industry they are very familiar with, like a business they grew up with or last worked at as an employee.

The Time Waster

The Consultant Sale can be time-consuming and resource intensive. No matter the experience level of the rep, when you invest significant 8 am-5 pm time and effort into understanding the customer’s business, identifying the pain points, and selling an annual custom solution using all station assets- it better be worth it.

A long research and sales process requires a high degree of product knowledge and a good client. The client needs to be empowered to make decisions and understand their challenges. We have all worked with clients who don’t have that information. All they know is not enough customers want their business at the price they want to sell it. We need to guard against energy sucks and look for chances to be the consultant. And know the difference between the two.

Slam and BAM

Some clients want a slam-bam relationship with their rep. They want a rate and schedule and will or won’t buy your stations. They are not in it for a long-term relationship yet. They know what they are selling (new restaurant), how long they want a schedule (grand opening), and have a budget. Don’t go consultant sell mode on these buyers.

Some buyers don’t know the answers to deep CNAs or don’t care. And they are tired of the growing amount of salespeople calling on them. Maybe they are just messengers but want to spend money. Make sure you qualify your leads. Did they contact you? Did you cold call them as a good opportunity in a hot business category?

We have all misread buyers by doing the initial consult and coming back with a proposal, and you are too late. The competition cut a deal on the spot and took the whole budget or your piece. Read the room!

By knowing when to streamline the process and when to dig in and invest in a long-term relationship, you are respecting the client’s time. And time is money!

Grant Napear Loses Bias Suit Against Bonneville International

0

Former Sacramento Kings announcer and KHTK host Grant Napear has lost a suit against Bonneville International, claiming the company showed bias against his religious beliefs, race and gender.

Napear was fired by Bonneville in 2020 after he tweeted “All lives matter” in response to a question about the Black Lives Matter protests and riots that gripped the nation in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. He filed the suit in federal district court in California alleging his termination was a violation of the California Fair Employment and Housing Act. Additionally, Napear believed the firing was retaliation, a violation of the state labor code.

Judge Dale Drozd was not convinced by the arguments made by Napear’s lawyer. Drozd granted Bonneville’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

“At bottom, [the] plaintiff has not alleged facts sufficient to support the inference that his termination was because of his religion as opposed to an obvious alternative explanation, such as that the substance and timing of plaintiff’s May 31, 2020 tweet were ‘particularly insensitive,’ or did ‘not reflect the views or values of [defendant],” Judge Drozd wrote.

The judge did allow Napear to amend his complaint against the company. His attorney, Matthew Ruggles, was optimistic they can advance the case they have.

Napear had been calling Kings games since 1988 and had been a host on KHTK since 1995 when he was dismissed. The company argued that Napear was ultimately let go because the tweet was insensitive.

Danny Rouhier Cast As Voice of Young Charles Barkley in FanDuel Commercial

0

Charles Barkley will have a new FanDuel commercial rolling out during NBA playoff coverage, and 106.7 The Fan host Danny Rouhier will be featured in it.

In the 30-second spot, Charles Barkley promotes same-game parlays and says if you’re betting on your favorite players, you have to think like your favorite players. Enter Rouhier – or at least his voice.

Danny talked about being a part of the spot on Thursday’s edition of Grant & Danny. He told co-host Grant Paulsen that the opportunity was everything he thought it would be.

“The experience has been incredible,” Rouhier said. “So, so, so cool.”

Obviously, that’s not Rouhier playing a younger Barkley. Danny said when it came to lending his voice, he had to stick to the script and what the actor portraying Barkley said.

“It’s not like I could just go off and sort of do Chuck and do Chuck-isms and different things,” he said. “I’ve got to say exactly what he said in the time allotted.”

Rouhier added that he ended up pitching a bunch of different variations on Barkley’s voice before they ultimately settled on the one they wanted.

“We did this whole range of them,” he said. “And I did so many different takes in the sound booth and we locked it in. These guys were so incredible to work with.”

Rouhier’s impression of the TNT analyst took centerstage in 2021 in a viral video. Producers of Inside the NBA liked it so much that they invited him on the show to interview Charles Barkley as Charles Barkley.

ESPN, NFL Network To Share NFL Draft Talent This Week

0

The NFL Draft is a week away, and even though ESPN and NFL Network will compete against each other for viewership over the three-day event, the two are coming together in coverage leading up to the big weekend in Kansas City.

ESPN names like Mel Kiper Jr., Todd McShay and Louis Riddick will be making appearances on NFL Network programming, while NFL’s Daniel Jeremiah and Kurt Warner will be guests on ESPN shows.

Kiper showed up on Good Morning Football on Thursday and McShay was on Path to the Draft. Jeremiah was featured on NFL Live and on SportsCenter.

Warner will be on Get Up Friday morning, while Riddick will appear on NFL Total Access that afternoon.

The draft expert crossovers for this week were planned, but that doesn’t mean more couldn’t happen next week. Both networks will send their talent and production crews to Kansas City ahead of Thursday night’s first round.

In addition to ESPN and NFL Network, ABC will have its own NFL Draft coverage for the sixth consecutive year.

SiriusXM Rolls Out NFL Draft Coverage Plans

SiriusXM subscribers looking for NFL Draft coverage next week from Kansas City will not be disappointed.

On Thursday, the satellite radio service revealed its plans for next week’s event in Kansas City. Listeners will be able to hear every selection announcement from number one to “Mr. Irrelevant.”

Jason Horowitz will anchor draft coverage all three days on SiriusXM NFL Radio. Pat Kirwan, Jim Miller and Rick Neuheisel will provide analysis throughout the weekend.

After draft coverage wraps up each day, Alex Marvez and Kirk Morrison, and Zig Fracassi and Ryan Leaf will host call-in shows where fans can sound off with their thoughts.

SiriusXM College Sports Radio will be live in Kansas City on Thursday and Friday starting at 6 p.m. eastern, carrying coverage of the draft through each night’s final selection. Kris Budden will anchor the shows from Taps on Main in K.C. Mark Dominik, EJ Manuel and Jacob Hester will be analyzing everything.

Bill Simmons: ‘Backlash is Okay’

0

Bill Simmons is one of many people talking about the future of sports media this week at the World Congress of Sports staged by CAA. He joined Michael Levine on stage Wednesday and said that he has one motto when it comes to running The Ringer – talent still wins.

As for the future, he is a little unsure about how easy it will be to find unique talent.

“Things I worry about with writers and podcasters — the younger people — is that instead of being wholly original to who they are, they play it safe and try to emulate other people and things that are already working,” he said. “They don’t want backlash. Backlash is okay sometimes. Sometimes it’s OK to swim against the grain with an opinion.”

Simmons isn’t arguing that the industry needs more young hot take artists. He said that audiences now are smart enough to “sniff out” who is being inauthentic.

Instead, he points to Stephen A. Smith as a good example. He never makes you read between the lines and he is willing to stand behind his opinion, no matter how it is met.

“Those are the people that continue to win. If you’re just saying what everyone else is saying, you’re not going to stand out,” Bill Simmons said. “That doesn’t mean that you should intentionally say stuff. That’s where people get in trouble.”

Pat McAfee Teases ‘Industry Changing’ Move

0

After announcing that a return to “Up to Something Season” was afoot, Pat McAfee is now teasing a move that he calls an “industry changer”.

The former NFL star took to Twitter to share his excitement for an upcoming partnership.

“Apparently…some really cool stuff can happen if you have an incredible crew around you and a belief in something,” McAfee wrote. “We love sports. We love bringing people together…that’s our business. We’re wildly lucky to be able to do what we do.”

McAfee then added that he believes “Our next move…will be an industry changer,” before saying the show “will never lose its soul”.

The future of The Pat McAfee Show has been the subject of much intrigue since a February social media post revealed he was considering stepping away from his massive sponsorship deal with FanDuel after saying they “don’t necessarily have the same philosophical views on stuff”.

McAfee has revealed that he will remain a member of the College GameDay crew in 2023, but has yet to announce further plans with the WWE.

Earlier this year, McAfee teased a “major announcement”, which was ultimately a new advertising partnership with Anheuser-Busch.

Doug Gottlieb: Colin Cowherd Is Going To Defend Draymond Green Because He’s With The Volume

0

Draymond Green has a bright media future, and FOX Sports Radio host Doug Gottlieb said it’s clear now that Green considers his on-court actions as entertainment value.

During his In The Bonus podcast, Gottlieb argued that Green has on-court persona has become too much.

“What are you doing getting up on a table, yelling, and antagonizing an opposing crowd? Who does that? Except for somebody who thinks of all of this in its entertainment value, not in you’re here to win a game and a championship and the entertainment comes along with that,” Gottlieb said.

“I’d like to be more sympathetic to Draymond because I don’t think anything he did in the game warranted a suspension. I actually don’t think he should have been ejected for it. I find it hard because he has to know he carries that badge. He has to know they’re coming at him. The Commissioner was there. I’m sure he feels a little bit mortified by Draymond’s behavior and the purely entertainment, pro-wrestling style in which he handled the ejection.”

Gottlieb then discussed some of the reactions to Green’s actions and argued that his FOX Sports Radio colleague — Colin Cowherd — is going to defend Green because of their business relationship.

“It’s weird. Colin will come to Draymond’s defense, but it has to be mentioned that Draymond’s podcast runs on Colin’s The Volume network, others will come at Draymond because they just don’t like the Warriors…I try and see it for what it is. I think he got screwed by the league.”

Scripps Sports Strikes First National Play-by-Play Deal With WNBA

0

Scripps Sports launched late last year with an eye on landing sports rights for the 61 local television stations it currently owns. On Thursday, the company announced its first deal.

Scripps Sports has struck a multi-year agreement with the WNBA for a Friday night package dubbed WNBA Friday Night Spotlight in two separate windows from May 26th through September 8th.

The WNBA broadcasts will air on ION, which marks the first sports property to air on the network.

“Scripps is fully committed to serving and growing the number of American women’s basketball fans who value the athleticism, professionalism, and excitement the WNBA brings into their living rooms,” said Scripps President and CEO Adam Symson.

Both national and regional broadcasts will be available in the two windows airing the broadcasts according to Scripps Sports President Brian Lawlor.

“We will have every game. We’ll be able to distribute it on a national basis. But also localize every game. Sort of like CBS and Fox do on Sunday afternoons (with the NFL).”

Scripps Sports has been viewed as a potential savior for MLB clubs who could see their local television rights reclaimed after the downfall of the Bally Sports and AT&T SportsNet regional sports networks. ION was also reported to be in negotiations with the Pac-12 for its upcoming television rights deal, according to The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy. However, that report was refuted by other college football reporters.

According to a report from Variety, ION was the 11th most-watched television network in 2022, behind HGTV and the Hallmark Channel, but above outlets like TNT, TBS, CNN, and The CW.

“Access to watch WNBA games is in high demand, and Scripps’ dedicated Friday night lineup of WNBA games on ION will become much-desired appointment viewing for WNBA fans,” said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert.

Jeff Van Gundy: Ryan Ruocco’s Vocal Warmups Made Me Want to Choke Him

0

ESPN NBA analyst Jeff Van Gundy is one of the more experienced basketball announcers in the game. However, nothing could have prepared him for the vocal exercises of Ryan Ruocco.

During an appearance on The Michael Kay Show Wednesday, Van Gundy was asked about Ruocco’s warmup routine. He said he was dumbfounded the first time he experienced it.

“I gotta say, the first time I worked with Ryan — it might have been an exhibition game, because I don’t think it was an NBA city — and for some reason, I had a rental car. I was driving us to the airport to try to catch our flight out,” Van Gundy began. “He goes ‘Do you mind if I do my vocal exercises?’, I had no idea what he’s talking about. We might be in the same business, but he’s young, I’m old. I have no idea what he’s talking about. I say ‘Sure’.

“And he starts…I go ‘What the hell is this guy doing?’ and this was going on for four or five minutes. He’s drinking hot tea, and gargling, and giving himself a throat massage. I wanted to choke him by the end of that car ride,” the former Knicks and Rockets coach admitted. “I was going to go at him. When he starts to warm up now, I leave the room. I’ve learned that.”

Earlier this week, the show discussed Ruocco’s warmup routine. Kay played a clip from a movie starring Jack Lemon, mimicking what Ruocco does. “It’s worse than that,” Kay said. “What Ryan does is worse than that.” Peter Rosenberg said “I love Ryan, but he’s an odd guy.”
