CNN Adds Former Manhattan Chief Assistant DA As Legal Analyst

0

CNN has announced the addition of attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo as a new on-air legal analyst for the network.

Agnifilo served as the Chief Assistant District Attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office under the direction of former Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr., who departed the office in 2021. As the Chief Assistant District Attorney, Agnifilo was the Acting District Attorney while Vance was out of the jurisdiction.

She worked in the office for 14 years, including four years as the Deputy Chief of the Sex Crimes Unit. She also worked in the Homicide Investigation Unit, the Asian Gang Unit, and the Family Violence and Child Abuse Bureau.

The addition of Agnifilo by CNN comes as all eyes in the news media landscape turn toward the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. Current Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has charged former President Donald Trump with 34 felonies.

Dan Le Batard: ‘Now We Know Why Endeavor Wouldn’t Comment On Dana White’ After WWE Deal

0

Earlier this week, UFC parent company Endeavor officially announced a deal to merge the organization with WWE to create a more than $20 billion company. Dan Le Batard believes the deal is the reason Endeavor never made a public stance after UFC President Dana White publicly assaulted his wife.

McMahon utilized WWE funds to silence allegations of sexual misconduct from employees. In total, McMahon paid his accusers more than $19 million for their silence. He subsequently announced his retirement from the organization in July of last year before returning and re-electing himself as the company’s Executive Chairman in January.

During The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz Tuesday, the former ESPN Radio host claimed the public controversies from Vince McMahon likely prohibited Endeavor from reprimanding White.

“I try to abstain from just the eviscerating of human character. Vince McMahon? Truly horrible…He’s back in power. He’s running WrestleMania,” Le Batard lamented. “Vince McMahon is back in power, and maybe you don’t care. Maybe you think it’s a small thing. But now you know why Endeavor didn’t comment on Dana White. Now you know. They couldn’t have two of them in a cage while the deal was being done. Because the deal wasn’t done yesterday. They couldn’t jeopardize the WWE deal. The $9 billion deal that now goes totally dirty, run by two kings who have no consequences for anything.

“I’m sure it’ll be a profitable great business and streaming. How can it not be? But what’s running both organizations and the labor being grounded into the fighters using their actual body just thrown into the mill here, so they can make their money so the two awful ones without consequences can make their money? Maybe it doesn’t bother you. Maybe you just want it to be fake sports, wrestling, and mixed martial arts. I’ll enjoy the fight in Miami on Saturday. Like I can make moral grandstands. I can raise my face and be infuriated, but I’ll be a hypocrite like I’ll be a hypocrite on what I’m watching where the party is.”

Stugotz agreed that many viewers likely don’t care what happens inside the company. He believed their only concern was that they’re entertained. Le Batard agreed before pleading for accountability for the new company’s leaders.

“Just don’t let it happen quietly. What’s happening at the top of that company, and what the men at the top of that company are accused of doing, and how they cash in any way because there are no consequences for them. Whether it’s rape allegations or video of you hitting your wife in public.”

CBS Sees Record Low Ratings With National Championship Game

0

Many lamented the lack of a “blue blood” college basketball program in the Final Four and openly questioned whether the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship Game would be the lowest rated ever. We now have the answer, and it wasn’t positive news for CBS.

Monday’s title game averaged 14.69 million viewers. That number represents a 15% decrease from last year’s Kansas/North Carolina matchup that aired on TBS, TNT, and truTV. The total viewing figure is the lowest-rated and least-watched title game.

The previous low came when Villanova defeated Michigan in 2018. An average of 16 million viewers watched that broadcast on TBS, TNT, and truTV.

The lowest National Championship Game broadcast on CBS before Monday night’s tilt was Baylor’s defeat of Gonzaga in 2021. An average audience of 17.1 million watched that contest.

Even though the broadcast was the lowest championship game on record, its total viewership still eclipsed the deciding game of last season’s NBA Finals. 13.99 million tuned into ABC to see the Golden State Warriors defeat the Boston Celtics. The UConn/San Diego State also outdrew the record-high audience of 9.9 million for the women’s national championship game that aired on ABC Sunday afternoon.

The news of the least-watched National Championship Game counters highs seen in the 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Round of 64 saw previously unseen heights in viewership, averaging 9.2 million viewers between CBS, TNT, TBS, truTV, and the March Madness Live streaming platform.

In total, this year’s March Madness coverage saw an average of 9.55 million viewers per broadcast window. That is a 7% decrease compared to 2022.

Acast Strikes Podcasting Deal With The Obamas

0

Higher Ground — the production company created by Barack and Michelle Obama — has reached a deal with podcast platform Acast.

The company will handle advertising sales and distribution for the Obamas podcast portfolio. Current shows produced by the former President’s company include The Big Hit Show with Alex Pappademas, Renegades: Born in the USA with President Obama and Bruce Springsteen, and The Sum of Us with Heather McGhee.

The new deal with Acast is completely separate from Higher Ground’s current contract with Audible. Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast began releasing episodes in March, and has a two-week exclusivity on the Audible platform before being distributed to other podcast outlets.

Previously, the Obamas had a deal with Spotify. That contract was signed in 2019 and ended in 2022 with the two sides failing to come to an extension.

“We’ve been deeply impressed by the creativity and innovation of the Acast team,” head of audio for Higher Ground Dan Fierman said in a statement. “We are excited to work with their team to bring our growing slate of audio content to existing fans and new audiences.”

“Higher Ground continues to deliver among the most engaging and high-caliber audio content in the industry, and we look forward to teaming up with them to make vital storytelling available to communities all over the globe,” said Acast CEO Ross Adams. “This relationship marks an exciting new chapter not only for Acast but for the audio industry at large, as we work hand-in-hand to make the world a more connected place.”

Silicon Valley Bank Collapse Leads to Boosts For CNBC, Fox Business

0

The economy was heavily in the news focus to begin the week of Mar. 13, following the sudden collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). It marked the largest U.S. bank failure since the 2007-08 financial crisis. Within the first two weeks of March, SVB, Silvergate Bank, and Signature Bank, all collapsed. Major companies like Roku and Roblox had significant funds associated with SVB.

On Mar. 13, just prior to the 9:30 a.m. ET opening of the U.S. markets on Wall Street, President Biden held a five-minute press conference to assure protection for SVB customers and depositors while none would be available to investors and shareholders.

Due to this news on Mar. 13, financial networks CNBC and Fox Business Network each saw mostly significant boosts from their normal levels, according to Nielsen Media Research. The following are each program’s deliveries and percentage differences in comparison to their respective prior Monday (Mar. 6, 2023) results:

Total viewership was up by double-digit percentages on both business outlets throughout the entire daytime but figures in the key 25-54 demographic clearly waned for CNBC in the afternoon hours.

New York Times Reporter Demands To Know Why White House Won’t Comment On Trump Indictment

0

During a press briefing on Tuesday, there was a heated exchange between White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and New York Times reporter Michael Shear. Shear questioned Jean-Pierre on why the White House was not commenting on the hush money case of former President Donald Trump in New York, citing that the president had previously spoken about other legal cases.

Shear asked Jean-Pierre the difference between President Biden’s willingness to discuss the broader issues surrounding the events of January 6 as opposed to the specifics of individual cases.

“But there are issues presented — people have been talking about them for weeks now — when a former president would be indicted for the first time and arrested for the first time. What is the White House’s reticence, and what’s the difference between that and this?” Shear said in a transcript published via Mediate.

Jean-Pierre replied by emphasizing the severity of the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

“It was a moment for our president to have spoken to,” Jean-Pierre responded. “When it comes to these types of cases, these criminal, specific cases, we’re just not gonna comment.”

Shear interjected and emphasized that over 500 legal cases involved Americans at risk of losing their freedom. The argument escalated, with Jean-Pierre accusing Shear of lecturing her and Shear responding that he did not need a lecture on the fact that people died.

“I hear you; I hear you! This is something that all Americans watch in real-time!” Jean-Pierre responded before observing that “people died” while crosstalk between the two obscured the argument.

Shear retorted, “Karine, I don’t require a lecture about the fact that lives were lost,” while Jean-Pierre accused him of lecturing her.

Tony Katz: MSNBC Can’t Pretend It’s Torn On How To Cover Trump Indictment

0

On Tuesday, some commentators confessed their uncertainty about how to report on the arraignment of Former President Donald Trump, who’s facing felony charges related to hush money payments during the 2016 presidential election.

During his Tony Katz and the Morning News program, WIBC Radio host Tony Katz criticized the rhetoric of some cable news morning shows in the lead-up to Trump’s arraignment and disagreed with MSNBC Political Analyst Elise Jordan’s statement that she was unsure how to cover such an event.

According to Jordan, Trump could have made a virtual court appearance via Zoom, but she suggested that it would not have satisfied his desire for theatrics.

“You’re not torn on how to cover this!” Katz exclaimed. “Thank God he (Trump) is putting on a show. Every media member better get down on their knees and praise Trump’s name for putting on a show, for making this a story.”

Trump entered a plea of not guilty in a New York City court following the indictment of 34 felony counts of first-degree falsifying of business records. Prosecutors have accused Trump of falsifying business records in New York to hide illegal activity and damaging information from American voters before and after the 2016 election.

“They love it; they could cover Trump all day,” added Katz. “Thank goodness that Trump is back and making headlines, and people will watch you again. Don’t act upset; you’re breathless about this, Elise Jordan.”

Katz restated that no former or current president has ever been prosecuted for a crime in the history of the United States. He suggested that the media might express disappointment if Trump did not appear in court wearing handcuffs. He noted Hunter Biden’s legal issues and said he be arrested and prosecuted for his alleged actions.

“If you tell me that Hunter Biden shouldn’t be in cuffs, you’re just doing whataboutism,” he added. “Hunter lied on a federal form to purchase a firearm.”

Fred Toucher is Living Our Industry’s Worst Nightmare

0

Fred Toucher lives a life that most radio professionals would be envious of. He is the star of one of the most respected shows in America. He has monster ratings. His listeners are as passionate about his show as they are about any of Boston’s teams. Yet right now, I don’t know that any of us would want to trade places with him.

The Toucher & Rich star has not been shy about what he is dealing with. Something is very wrong with his voice. He doesn’t know what and he doesn’t know why. Even scarier, he doesn’t know if or when things will get back to normal.

“I mean, it has occurred to me. Is my career over if I continue to talk like this?” he admitted on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s morning show earlier this week.

Although Fred swears he feels no pain, it would be naive to think he is not bothered. One listen to him on air and it is clear that something is wrong. He sounds like Tom Waits singing about haunted junkyards, except he is talking about the Celtics’ playoff seeding. Even if you love the show, it isn’t easy to listen to these days.

Toucher has an amazing sense of humor about all of this. If he were in serious pain, the story might be different, but right now, he is making jokes about the physical grind of radio and giving glory to Zeus.

It is the stuff sports radio needs more of. Here is a guy that hated the very idea of sports radio, so he decided to do a show he would want to listen to. Toucher & Rich makes time for sports, but the heart of the show is the way they exist in their market, whether that means talking to drunks at games or eavesdropping on 911 calls from Brookline, MA.

It has never been hard to like Fred Toucher. Even if you think he is a grumpy smart-ass on air, his vulnerability is commendable. He has always been honest about his struggles, whatever they may be. That is why this one is tough.

Each update is a mixed bag of emotions. I am happy he is not in pain. I am frustrated that the first treatment he was given is one that a new doctor dismisses as inconsequential. I am encouraged to hear he is learning new ways to speak that do not strain his throat as much. I try to have sympathy and understanding when he needs to take a day off.

Through all of this, the show soldiers ahead. Rich Shertenlieb, Mike Lockhart, Jon Wallach and crew are all incredibly talented guys. Even without Fred Toucher, there is no way 98.5 The Sports Hub will grind to a halt in the mornings.

What he is going through right now is like a nightmare that has come to life for those of us that have ever made a living with our voice. Not being able to speak is bad. Being able to speak but not sounding like yourself? That has to be maddening.

He isn’t just at the top of his game. Toucher & Rich routinely tops the BSM Top 20 list of Major Market Morning Shows. The show is at the top of the sports radio game in general. I am not trying to be dramatic for the sake of clicks, but that is in jeopardy and no one can tell Fred Toucher or his listeners why. It’s not fair.

This reads way more like an obituary than I intended. That is unnecessary. After all, the point that Fred Toucher keeps hammering home is that physically, he is doing fine.

The situation isn’t dire. Things just don’t feel right. The uncertainty facing Toucher and his show is not easy to sit with, no matter what your relationship with him or the show may be.

NPR Staff Confront CEO Over Diversity & Layoffs

0

During a virtual all-staff presentation last week, National Public Radio (NPR) employees accused the network’s CEO of racism. The presentation included financial metrics and diversity level updates after the organization cut approximately 10% of its workforce, laying off 84 employees and halting production on four seasonal podcasts. Another 13 employees from the digital team are also set to be cut, according to The Wall Street Journal.

According to The Daily Wire, NPR CEO John Lansing and other executives addressed the news department and programming team during the meeting, taking employee questions. The questions included inquiries about the number of employees of different races and identities laid off compared to those who retained their jobs.

At one point, a laid-off black employee asked Lansing why some podcasts lacked marketing support, called out executives by name for repeating statements about more accountability, and questioned how the network would make diversity essential. Lansing pointed to the network’s mission statement and urged the group to “turn down the rhetoric” and avoid naming individuals.

However, some employees accused Lansing of “tone-policing” and called his response “racist.” One employee even referenced a segment from NPR’s Code Switch, titled “When Civility Is Used As A Cudgel Against People Of Color,” and wrote, “Civility is a weapon wielded by the powerful.”

In response, NPR Chief Communications Officer Isabel Lara said the organization respects staff conversations and values feedback. She also acknowledged the difficulty of the situation and the staff’s right to hold NPR leadership accountable.

In February, Lansing had broken the news to NPR staff that the network would have to cut most vacant positions and lay off around 10% of its current staff due to a “sharp decline” in advertisement revenues. This came after he had pledged to avoid layoffs, as the network faced losing approximately $10 million from the current fiscal year budget. However, new projections now show at least a $30 million shortfall.
