Beau Morgan: 92.9 The Game Finally Has A Voice That Sounds Like It’s From Atlanta

The new 92.9 The Game morning show in Atlanta is going to bring listeners a different sound, one that co-host Beau Morgan is proud of.

Morgan and his two co-hosts-to-be, Tiffany Blackmon and Mike Johnson, joined Dukes & Bell on Monday as part of the morning show announcement. Morgan, an Atlanta native, said to have a southern voice on the air means a lot.

“It’s kind of cool to hear a Southern voice on the station in the city that actually sounds like they’re from the South,” Morgan said. “So I’m ready to roll!”

Morgan added that he was chomping at the bit to get started on the air after working in a variety of different roles at the station.

“Mike Conti had a vision. I’m glad to be a part of it,” he said. “I’ve worked at this station where I’ve been told hey you don’t sound like what we do on the air. And that’s pretty amazing considering I am the audience. This is my hometown.”

An announcement on the official debut of the new morning show will be coming soon.

Americans Expected to Bet $15.5 Billion on NCAA Tournament

It’s one of the most exciting times of the year for sports bettors – the NCAA tournament.

According to the American Gaming Association, about 68 million Americans plan to wager some $15.5 billion on the tournament.

The AGA published a new survey that indicates 31 million American adults will place a bet either online, at a retail sportsbook or with a bookie. Another 21.5 million plan to just bet casually with friends.

The boom is due in large part to the fact that sports betting has become legalized in more and more states. It’s currently legal in 33 states and D.C.

“March Madness is one of the best traditions in American sports—and America’s most wagered-on competition,” AGA president and CEO Bill Miller said in a statement. “Critically, the expansion of regulated sports betting over the past five years has brought safeguards to more than half of American adults who can now bet legally in their home market.”

The AGA reported that among bettors, Kentucky is the most popular choice to win the national championship in Houston. Texas A&M, Gonzaga, UCLA and Alabama rounded out the top five.

Could the recent shifts in TV rights and conference alignments eventually lead to the formation of an NCAA tournament competitor? It’s possible according to Jay Bilas.

The ESPN college basketball insider told Dan Patrick on Monday that conferences like the Big Ten and SEC, which are in contracts valued near or in excess of $1 billion a year, are paying attention to the dynamics at play.

“I think there is a chance in the future, and I’m not saying it’s immanent, but a chance in the future where the biggest conferences will say, ‘Well why are we letting someone else control all of this? Especially all of this money? Why don’t we just start our own tournament?'” Bilas said.

Bilas said the money some of these schools are receiving just from these massive contracts has made some conferences even bigger than the NCAA itself.

“Given how everything is changing and is going to continue to change, and we’re having all these conferences realign – and the amount of money in this multi-billion dollar business is growing,” he said. “Tournament inclusion is a big deal and having this committee decide this stuff when the criteria is a moving target I think that’s gonna be a possibility in the future.”

Patrick said ultimately as the landscape in college athletics continues to shift, the chatter about potentially breaking away from the NCAA tournament with the bigger conferences intensifies.

“You’re hearing more about it, and I don’t see it in the next few years,” Bilas said. “But we didn’t see any of this conference stuff coming and we didn’t see everything growing to this point 20 year ago. And it would be a lot easier to start that stuff now.”

92.9 The Game Announces New Morning Show With Tiffany Blackmon, Mike Johnson & Beau Morgan

A new morning show is coming to Atlanta this month. Audacy announced on Monday that Tiffany Blackmon, Mike Johnson, and Beau Morgan are teaming up for a new show called The Morning Shift on 92.9 The Game. No specific start date was given.

Each of the three team members comes at sports from a different angle and all of them have deep Atlanta ties. Blackmon is a sideline reporter for ESPN covering college football and the XFL. Johnson spent five years as a member of the Atlanta Falcons. Morgan has been with The Game in a variety of roles, including as the executive producer of Dukes & Bell in the afternoon and the Atlanta Falcons Radio Network.

“Mike, Beau and I have already had so much fun building this show together, and we can’t wait to get started,” Blackmon said in a press release. “On a personal level, it is so special for me to co-host this morning show in my home state.”

Last month, John & Hugh came to an end when Hugh Douglas left The Game to join sister station 94 WIP in Philadelphia. Audacy says John Fricke will remain with the station in a new role.

“Tiffany, Mike and Beau are going to offer a unique combination of perspectives on sports, culture, current events and day-to-day life that our listeners will find to be informative, entertaining and funny,” 92.9 The Game’s brand manager Mike Conti added. “They’ve quickly developed a chemistry that I think will lead to a fast-paced, fun, high-energy show each morning.”

In addition to a new morning show, the station is also getting a new early morning show. Dylan Matthews will be the producer of The Morning Shift. He will also host The Hometown Take each morning at 5 am.

Mark Simone: Fox News Should Just Buy Dominion Voting Systems

Fox News is embroiled in a defamation lawsuit brought forth by Dominion Voting Systems over unverified claims in regards to the security of the 2020 presidential election. Radio host Mark Simone believes the math doesn’t add up.

While discussing the trial on 710 WOR Monday, Simone pointed out that the company’s valuation makes it hard to believe it has suffered $1.6 billion in damages.

“Do you know that in 2018 Dominion was sold? Somebody bought Dominion and they paid $38 million for 75% of it. So that would make the whole company worth about $60 million, right? So how are they suing for $1.6 billion in damages? The whole company is only worth $60 million,” Simone said.

He then joked that Fox News should consider just ponying up the money to purchase the company outright.

“If they went into court and they figured out the damage was so bad to the whole company, it’s only worth $60 million. If I were Fox, I’d just go buy it for $60 million. Offer $80 million. Just buy it. Might be the way to go.”

Reports have surfaced that Fox News attempted to settle the lawsuit out of court. However, Dominion Voting Systems has reportedly denied those advances by the cable outlet.

RJ Choppy: World Baseball Classic Deserves Better Than FS2

The World Baseball Classic is in its early stages, and 105.3 The Fan’s RJ Choppy is a big fan of the worldwide event.

After Choppy admitted his children — who don’t watch regular season baseball — were interested in the tournament, he claimed that it deserved a better television home than FS2.

“I wish they would promote this anywhere. Maybe Major League Baseball — what a novel idea not putting this not on FS2,” Choppy said.

“What channel is this on?” questioned Shan Shariff.

“FS1 and FS2,” replied Choppy.

“I didn’t even know there was an FS2,” Shariff countered.

“Yeah, it’s like Bally alternate. Like ESPN 8 the Ocho. They’re gonna have one game on FOX. The Championship Game will be on FOX,” said Choppy.

The host then declared how enjoyable the experience has been watching games with big atmospheres at a time where a sports fan’s attention isn’t divided in several different directions.

“If you like playoff baseball, I would argue it is more enjoyable than playoff baseball,” Choppy said. “It’s an opportunity for the sport — during non-football — to have a big stage. The World Series is played in the middle of the NFL season. What’s going on right now? March Madness, the NBA regular season, and the NHL. So it’s a chance for them.”

Co-host Bobby Belt mentioned that the final out of the World Series received 500,000 views on Twitter, while a three-run home run hit by Shohei Ohtani over the weekend has seen more than 7 million views as proof there is a large audience for the event.

Joy Taylor: ‘I’m Excellent Because I Had to Be’

Joy Taylor has quickly seen her star rise in sports media circles, but the FS1 host knows she isn’t an overnight success. It took years to get where she wanted to be.

During an appearance on the I Am Athlete podcast, Taylor admitted she has faced many challenges as a Black woman in sports on her way to stardom.

“I’ve been literally told how hard it is to do a daily show, while I was working on a daily show,” said Taylor. “You mean the show I currently work on? I don’t know how hard it is to do that? The same meeting I’m in every day? The same wake up call? Same time? How would I not know how hard it is to do the show I work on? You have to constantly reaffirm that you are good enough, that you belong there, and always prove it.”

Taylor admitted that she always believed she had to do twice the work for half of the opportunity, but that mentality made her better.

“That’s why I’m excellent. I had to be. I couldn’t be average, I couldn’t be ok, I couldn’t be late, I couldn’t complain, I couldn’t say no,” Taylor said. “Now I do, but you have to do that because you can’t give people the opportunity to doubt you. So that is what the sacrifice is. There’s a lot of pride sacrificed, you gotta eat a lot of shit, you gotta listen to a lot of jokes, you gotta ignore little comments, little microaggressions.”

Taylor is currently the host of Speak on FS1 after serving as co-host of The Herd with Colin Cowherd for more than three years.

Sports Media Reacts To ESPN Syracuse Firing Brent Axe

Galaxy Media President and CEO Ed Levine did not beat around the bush. His Syracuse sports talker got rid of Brent Axe because he did not like the way Axe covered the Orange. He also mentioned that recently retired Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim is a partner in station ownership.

“I’m an SU fan, I’m sorry, but I bleed Orange,” Levine said to syracuse.com before accusing the site of having an agenda when it comes to covering the university’s teams. “I’m not going to apologize for that, and I think a fair reading of the Orange is appropriate. I understand (Galaxy has) a business relationship (with Syracuse), that Coach (Jim) Boeheim and I are personal friends and he’s an investor in my company.”

That level of candor has not won Levine or Galaxy many supporters in the sports media industry. People that cover sports on TV, radio, and the internet took to social media to voice their displeasure with the move.

Many friends and colleagues weighed in to not only blast the radio station and it’s owner, but also to praise the work of Axe.

It wasn’t just the people with a personal connection to Axe weighing in. Others around the industry called out Galaxy for the idea that a sports talk radio host can be fired for not being positive all the time.

Jay Wright: Broadcasting One Game Made Me Glad I Was No Longer A Coach

It has been a busy first year away from coaching for former Villanova head coach Jay Wright. He has called games as an analyst for CBS, was a part of Sunday night’s Selection Show, and it was announced that he will be a studio analyst during the NCAA Tournament in the Atlanta studios with Ernie Johnson, Candace Parker, and Seth Davis.

Wright was a guest on The Steam Room podcast last week with Johnson and Charles Barkley and he said that he doesn’t miss coaching because he feels he got everything out of it that he could possibly could, including two National Championships:

“I really don’t miss it at all. I enjoyed every second of it. There was never a time when I thought ‘I don’t like this’. I feel like I got everything out of it and I’m enjoying this new life.”

During the interview, Johnson asked Wright if the door is open for the Naismith Hall of Famer to return to coaching and Wright said that he is at peace with the decision he has made.

“I really think I’m done. I know enough about life to know that things change. In my heart, I’m such at peace with it. I really like where I am….I just don’t have that drive to coach a team and lead a team.”

Wright did mention that there was game this year he did at Purdue where he loved the atmosphere before the game and then he looked at the face of the coaches on the other side of the court and thought that he made the right decision.

“Once in a while, you are standing on the court, you do the open before the game and they are doing the national anthem and the place right before that is rocking.

“I remember doing a game at Purdue. It was so loud we couldn’t hear in our headsets. There’s a little secondary ‘This is cool, this juice is cool’. As soon as the game starts, I look across and see the faces of the coaches, the agony. I’m so glad I’m out of this and on the other side.”

MLB Plans to Stream Games For Free As Bally Sports Bankruptcy Looms

As bankruptcy looms for the Bally Sports-branded regional sports networks, MLB is reportedly planning to stream games for free for fan bases affected by a potential lapse in coverage.

According to a report from The New York Post, Diamond Sports Group — owner of the Bally Sports-branded channels — will likely file bankruptcy later this week, and utilize the filing as a way to get out of contracts with the Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Guardians, San Diego Padres, and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Should that happen, MLB will offer fans in those specific markets a way to stream the broadcasts free of charge, likely on the MLB.tv platform. While offering the games for free in the meantime, MLB would continue to negotiate with cable providers to return the clubs back to traditional linear television outlets.

Diamond Sports Group has admitted it has not paid its monthly rights fee to the Diamondbacks as part of a plan to ensure financial “flexibility” as bankruptcy proceedings look likelier and likelier.

The Reds, Guardians, Padres, and Diamondbacks aren’t the only franchises with television questions as Opening Day approaches. After Warner Bros. Discovery announced it would exit the regional sports network business by ending its AT&T SportsNet channels, the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, and Colorado Rockies have yet to announce where their games will be broadcast in 2023.

While the Bally Sports channels look to get out from under some of its MLB contracts, the outlets plan to continue broadcasting the NBA and NHL franchises they currently hold the rights to through the end of the regular season and the first round of each sport’s playoffs.

According to The Post, MLB recently unsuccessfully attempted to reacquire control of the local television rights of the 14 franchises that air on Bally Sports channels.
