Do You Have Affirmations Of Gratitude?

0

Having gratitude for your life is all the rage. If you, like me, have trouble starting your day with positive affirmations and maintaining a positive outlook about your job, read on!

We are told to be grateful for what we have and remember it could be worse. That feels like a really low bar, right? Here is another version. Try a few affirmations of gratitude instead.

“I HAVE A JOB.”

With interest rates rising, inflation increasing, and spending down; corporations are laying people off. PayPal laid off 7% of its entire workforce. Amazon let 18,000 go. Alphabet (Google) said goodbye to 12,000 jobs. Radio sales managers need to hire people like you – experienced sellers with a track record of bringing home the bacon.

I AM A PROBLEM SOLVER.”

You solve a problem for your company when it comes to revenue. You know people, and you sell advertising better than anything they can come up with…so far.

Yes, they are trying to replace you, but Zoom Info reports iHeart’s self-serve spot buying service,  AdBuilder, is doing under 5 million in business. You have time to solidify your value. Be happy you are the rainmaker.

I WORK IN THE PEOPLE BUSINESS.”

Sports talk radio is the ultimate companion to millions of listeners. They aren’t robots, and your stations improve their lives by talking about what they care about 24/7. Celebrate selling access to callers, Twitter followers and FANS who go to games. You also get to work with local celebrities that everybody knows but you know best. We all need a connection to other people and want to be seen and heard.

“I GET TO CHANGE HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF.”

In this job, you determine your value, feelings about your work, and who you work with. You get to set a strategy and talk to the businesspeople you want to help and do business with. It’s like running your own business with a tremendous support staff. Try to do it independently, and you will appreciate accounting, traffic, production, and sales assistance. Those wins produce deposits in your bank account.

I HAVE COMPETITION!”

That format competitor across the street does things differently and sometimes better than you or tries to imitate you and looks terrible. They motivate you to beat them to a new account or put a moat around your best clients so they can’t be touched. They keep you sharp and willing to try new things. Good competition schemes to take money from your station, and your management needs you to protect them. And they also provide a place for you to work one day. The FTC wants to eliminate non-competes so you can walk across the street this year.

Max Media has found an interesting new revenue stream in Virginia Beach. ESPN Radio 94.1 has sold its naming rights. The station has rebranded as Priority Auto Sports Radio 94.1 ESPN.

The programming on the station does not change. Listeners in the 757 will still hear the nationally syndicated ESPN Radio lineup except for in afternoon drive when The Tim Donnelly Show is on the air.

Keith Olbermann Believes Liberal TV News Is Nearing Extinction

0

There have been many recent changes at CNN. Many — including the hiring of CEO Chris Licht — haven’t gotten the Keith Olbermann stamp of approval.

Olbermann shared his disdain for the direction of both CNN and MSNBC during his Countdown with Keith Olbermann podcast, fearing the potential extinction of liberal television could be on the horizon.

“At a time when the nation actually needs cable TV news, and when it’s only means of survival is to only offer compelling, intelligent, well-produced political shows,” Olberman said, “and no, I am not campaigning, they would sooner self-immolate than hire me — instead, the new boss ‘poisoners’ have concluded that the magic bullet is putting Gayle King and Bill Maher on CNN once a week each? And putting Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert on MSNBC whenever they will agree to go on.

“Because — at a time when all the forces that can be brought to bear against democracy, against diversity, against more voters voting more often in more convenient ways — what America needs out of CNN and MSNBC is celebrity interviews from Gayle King and stale, naive, faux-Libertarian, both-sidesist nonsense from what is left over a decade after Bill Maher stopped trying very hard.”

The former cable news host then said he is fond of King, but when the potential soul of the nation is at stake, she isn’t the best person for the job.

“I have nothing against Gayle King. She is a very nice person. I’ve known her so long we met when I was just starting at SportsCenter and she was a local newscaster in Hartford, Connecticut. I know that the CBS morning show that she is on is the best last-place show out of all the dozens of different last-placed shows CBS has produced in the mornings over the decades.”

Olbermann continued by pointing out that a once-a-week cable news program has never succeeded and won’t succeed with King or Maher, either.

NBC Officially Unveils Noah Eagle, Todd Blackledge as New Big Ten Booth

0

It’s officially official: Noah Eagle, Todd Blackledge, and Kathryn Tappen will join the Big Ten on NBC booth when the network begins airing the conference’s football package in 2023.

NBC made the announcement Thursday, after weeks of speculation about the moves.

“We are excited to showcase Big Ten Saturday Night on the NBC Sports’ primetime marquee,” said NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood. “When you hear Todd’s voice, you know it’s a big college football game. It has been that way for decades.

“Noah is one of the industry’s rising young play-by-play commentators, who has excelled calling numerous sports across multiple platforms for a wide range of audiences. We are thrilled to pair him in the booth with Todd.

“Kathryn has told the stories of so many memorable Notre Dame Football moments over the last decade in her on-field reporting and interviews,” Flood continued. “With their collective college football experience and great enthusiasm for the game, Todd, Noah and Kathryn join a production team that can’t wait to kick off the Big Ten season.”

Blackledge joins NBC after working as a college football analyst for the network for the past 17 seasons. Previously, he was the an analyst for CBS and ABC, making 2023 his 30th consecutive season covering college football as an analyst.

Eagle is the son of broadcasting legend Ian Eagle, and currently serves as the radio voice of the Los Angeles Clippers. He comes to NBC after calling college football games for FOX Sports in 2022.

Tappen has spent the past nine seasons working NBC’s college football coverage with Notre Dame. Eight of those nine seasons were spent as the network’s sideline reporter before anchoring the studio coverage from South Bend in 2022.

2023 will mark the beginning of a seven-year contract for NBC to air Big Ten football games in primetime. The move is one of the biggest notable expansions in the college football arena for the network since its partnership with Notre Dame began in 1991.

Stan Norfleet To Replace N.D. Kalu On SportsTalk 790 in Houston

0

Change is afoot at SportsTalk 790 in Houston. Chris Gordy will have a new co-host in middays as N.D. Kalu exits and Stan Norfleet comes aboard for Next Up.

Kalu, a former Houston Texans defensive end, has decided to leave radio behind. Instead, he will focus on his real estate business.

“N.D. is a tremendous talent and one of the most down-to-earth people I’ve ever had the privilege to work with. He will be missed,” said iHeartMedia Houston’s head of AM programming, Bryan Erickson.

Stan Norfleet comes to Houston after most recently being on WFNZ in Charlotte. He is no stranger to Texas, though. He finished his college football career at Texas Southern University. He also worked in the sales departments for both the Rockets and the Texans.

“It is a tremendous blessing and honor to join the renowned iHeartMedia Houston family. I have long been a fan and avid listener of Sportstalk 790 and respect the history and contributions of its personalities,” Stan Norfleet said in a press release. “My affinity for Space City spans nearly two decades and I look forward to connecting with old friends and new listeners in the market.”

In addition to his time on air in Charlotte, Norfleet has also been heard on 92.9 The Game in Atlanta and seen on Raycom’s regionally syndicated ACC Network. He is also a former columnist at BSM.

“Stan brings amazing passion to everything he does,” said Erickson. “He has strong local ties and we’re thrilled to add him to the team.”

Roland Martin: ‘You Can Count on Bill Maher Saying Pretty Stupid Stuff’

0

The beating death of Tyre Nichols by Memphis police officers has brought out a bevy of opinions on the matter, and Roland Martin took issue with Bill Maher’s take.

During Real Time with Bill Maher last week, the HBO host said people’s preoccupation with race has dominated the thinking in too many cases. Martin strongly disagreed.

“You can always count, these days, on Bill Maher saying some pretty stupid stuff,” Martin said. “On his Friday show, they had some conversation about the Tyre Nichols case and the video dropped. He had former Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH) on his show, and if you wanna see how two white men react to this, and how their commentary is utterly ridiculous, watch this.”

Martin then played a clip of Maher saying “America’s culture of violence does go deeper than race” after mentioning two Asians were murdered by an Asian shooter in California and Tyre Nichols was beaten by five Black Memphis police officers. Ryan added that the conversation should be about mental health, guns, and cops, adding that police officers are acting out of stress rather than hatred.

“Here’s my problem with this: ‘There’s a preoccupation with race’. He wants to act like race doesn’t matter. Is race the only thing? No. The reason we talk about the race aspect is because it is real. Race doesn’t apply to everything, but it applies to a lot of things.

“Bill wants to act like ‘Oh, there’s this preoccupation with it. Asians killing Asians and Black cops killing someone that’s Black’. Bill, if you look at what the FBI Director said, the greatest threat to America is White domestic terrorism. He didn’t say terrorism in general. He said White domestic terrorism.”

Maher’s comments came during his Overtime segment, which will begin airing as a quasi-postgame show on CNN Friday evenings at 11:30 PM ET beginning Friday, February 3rd.

CBS Tried ‘Intervention’ With Tony Romo

0

After his performance during the 2022 season, many have questioned why CBS Sports NFL analyst Tony Romo has seemed off his game after seeing high praise during the early stages of his broadcasting career.

A recent nugget from Andrew Marchand of The New York Post claims CBS executives attempted an “intervention” with Romo before the season.

“Tony Romo needs to study more,” Marchand said during The Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast. “He needs to be better prepared. As you move away from the sidelines, you need to do more work. I know CBS is aware of this. They tried an intervention last offseason. They knew, they anticipated this. That’s a credit to them, the people in charge there. But it has not gotten better.”

Marchand also argued that it appears as if Romo’s partner — Jim Nantz — is content to let the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback struggle.

“This was the narrative out of CBS when Romo was getting all of the publicity: you heard from Nantz’ side and people from CBS that Nantz was the one creating Romo,” quipped Marchand. “The issue now is, why isn’t Nantz helping Romo get to this next level?”

Romo — who signed a 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS in 2020 — addressed his critics in an interview with Jenna Lemoncelli of The New York Post, saying he’s simply trying new things.

“I mean, some changes are good, some you’re like, ‘Ah, I shouldn’t do that’. But I always trial and error a bunch and sometimes it works.”

The 42-year-old Romo appeared to push back on the insinuation that he doesn’t prepare for broadcasts like he used to during the interview.

“You’re going to fail all the time, but at the same time, you succeed because of that, as long as you think about it and try to understand how to improve and then go about the process to make that happen, which is work ethic and commitment. But you got to have a plan for it before.”

Jason Benetti: Negotiations With Chicago White Sox ‘Kind of A Pain’

0

Jason Benetti and Steve Stone recently saw their contracts renewed by NBC Sports Chicago to team once more as the television voices of the Chicago White Sox. Benetti says the talks about a renewal weren’t without their hiccups.

In a profile with Chicago Sun-Times writer Jeff Agrest, Benetti said the talks about the situation weren’t exactly what he envisioned.

“The really good news is we got somewhere good,” Benetti said. “It was kind of a pain, really. There were some things that we had to get through that I thought were silly, and I’m sure they thought some of the stuff that I was talking about might’ve been silly. But we got there in the end.”

Agrest reported the Atlanta Braves were watching the situation with bated breath. Their television play-by-play announcer, Chip Caray, recently departed for the same position with the St. Louis Cardinals.

One of the sticking points in the negotiations between the White Sox and Benetti was how many regular season contests he would miss due to his work with FOX Sports. Benetti is announcing MLB and college football games for the network in 2023 and did his first NFL work for FOX Sports this season. Benetti admitted that were points of frustration along the way.

“I think the work has been strong and I appreciate the heck out of the fans and I have loved the Sox for all my life. I just thought it would be easier. But just because it wasn’t easier doesn’t mean it didn’t get done. Where I have put myself, totally honestly, the place I am is we got it done, and that means something. It means both sides wanted it to happen.”

Chicago White Sox Senior Vice President of Revenue and Marketing Brooks Boyer told Agrest he didn’t see any complications in the negotiations.
