Fred Toucher: People Say Worse Things to Me Every Day Than What Jack Edwards Said About Pat Maroon

In late November, NESN’s Jack Edwards insinuated that Tampa Bay Lightning forward Pat Maroon was fat after making a quip about his weight and how the NHL vet “had a few more pizzas” since weighing in at training camp. Edwards apologized to Maroon Thursday, it reportedly didn’t go well, and Fred Toucher and Rich Shertenlieb of 98.5 The Sports Hub thought it was ridiculous.

“It makes Jack Edwards come across like a good guy and makes Pat Maroon look like an absolute baby,” Shertenlieb said of the Boston Globe’s characterization of the events. “Jack got his shot in, Pat Maroon got his shot in, and you meet up in the locker room.”

“People say worse stuff to me than that every day,” Fred Toucher argued. “Every day. By people in my life, by people on social media. I’m insulted worse than that every day. If I had a dollar for every time someone called me a ‘fatso’…There was an article — it was a great article — about Rich and I years ago and it describes us as — it essentially calls me fat. It was like ‘The husky Fred Toucher’ or whatever the hell it is. I didn’t care. Who cares that you’re fat?”

Shertenlieb argued that Edwards’ explanation — that he was showing respect for Maroon as being “immovable” in front of the net — was plausible, and showed contrition by apologizing.

“Jack Edwards showed that it was a mistake, he wasn’t trying to upset the guy, and then for 10 minutes let the guy tear into him. You’re a baby, an absolute baby for doing that,” Shertenlieb said of Maroon.

Toucher argued if he apologized to someone after calling them fat and they wouldn’t accept the apology, he’d walk away before a 10-minute conversation took place.

Nate Burleson has been on CBS Mornings since September 2021 and it has given him another platform to show off his talent and his voice in the media. It has also caused him to have a different schedule than he did when he was at Good Morning Football on NFL Network.

Burleson was a guest on the latest episode of the R2C2 Podcast with Ryan Ruocco and CC Sabathia and said he wants to be the first one to enter the building every weekday morning because more prep work has to be done on anything that can happen immediately in news.

“The news schedule, I’m waking up a little bit earlier. For Good Morning Football, I’d wake up around 4:45. Now, I wake up at 4 AM. I want to get into the city. I like to be the first one in the studio just so I can prepare for the show.

“In football, there’s this revolving door of information that we live in because we are working in the football space. But, when you are working in news, you have to be knowledgeable about everything, It could be social issues on a national level, it could be weather internationally, it could be politics one day.

“Go to sleep with one thing on your mind thinking you know what the show is going to be. Then you wake up and we are pretty much tearing up the show and starting with a new lead block because something happened overnight. Then, not to mention, we have guests.”

Burleson mentioned he wants to be prepared for anything because his biggest fear is not being knowledgeable about a news topic that is discussed and proving the doubters of him correct.

“I think what gives me the most fear is having 30 seconds and not having done my homework or not be as knowledgeable about a specific topic and then in 30 seconds, I blow it. That’s what I think about everyday. In news, I just don’t want that judgment for anybody to say ‘Gotcha, I told you he didn’t know what he was doing, I told you he doesn’t belong there.’

“It’s one of those shows where you have to be on your toes. It’s 2 hours, but there’s not a ton of time for us to just talk. This isn’t a sports show so we are not debating about anything. We’re just front-row seats to the news and then we deliver that news to the viewer.”

While on Good Morning Football, Burleson was able to talk about more than just the NFL and it allowed him to open up more of his personality to the viewer.

“As I got into TV, I realized that my voice was unique. We are all very similar in the sense that we might love a certain sport where people identify us with that sport, but we are sport junkies. I had all of these different loves. All of these different things I felt like I wanted to talk about. I couldn’t do it if I was just doing football.

“Then, I started to open up more on Good Morning Football and thank you to the NFL Network because I started showing my love for hip-hop and writing poetry and then I started talking about investing. As I started to open up myself, it seems like the world in the media space started to do the same.”

In the end, Burleson is grateful for the opportunities that Good Morning Football gave him and he told Ruocco and Sabathia that the show allowed everyone on set to be themselves and that there is more than one way to have a successful show.

“I’m thankful for that show. It was unique at first because it was just four people talking football but the more we got into it, the more the show allowed it to just be us. It’s not so straight-laced and traditional as it used to be. That isn’t taking a shot at what TV and media and radio once was, but there’s an evolution. You can do both. You can put on a suit and tie and talk hardcore X’s and O’s, but then you can also dress it down and put on a hoodie and give the same type of passion and talk about any other sport that you love.”

KNX News Launches ‘LA’s Afternoon News’

KNX News has announced the launch of LA’s Afternoon News, which will feature Rob Archer, Karen Adams, Brian Douglas, and Charles Feldman.

The new show will be heard weekdays from 2:00-7:00 PM, beginning Monday, January 30th.

“Rob, Karen, Brian, and Charles are the perfect team to take afternoons on KNX News to the next level in 2023 and beyond,” said Audacy Southern California Regional President Jeff Federman. “They bring enormous reporting experience, perspective, and humanity to the news that impacts our lives every day.”

Rob Archer is no stranger to Los Angeles listeners. He’s been heard on the airwaves in the city since 1999, joining KNX News in 2015. He previously anchored the station’s weekend morning news.

Karen Adams has anchored afternoons KNX News since 2019 after working as a street reporter when joining the station in 2017.

Brian Douglas has served as the station’s traffic reporter since 2016, both as an anchor and in the air. He previously had stops in New York, Chicago, and Phoenix during his radio career, as well as a nationally syndicated show with Westwood One.

Finally, Charles Feldman has served as the Investigative Reporter at KNX for several years and is the co-host of the station’s program KNX In-Depth. Before joining KNX, Feldman was an investigative correspondent at CNN based in New York and Los Angeles for two decades.

The new launch of LA’s Afternoon News comes on the heels of previous afternoon anchor Mike Simpson moving to mornings after the retirement of Dick Helton, who spent 24 years with the station.

Jack Edwards Apologizes to Pat Maroon, Claims ‘Intentional Misreading’ Of His Comments

Earlier this NHL season, Boston Bruins television announcer Jack Edwards created headlines after criticizing Tampa Bay Lightning Pat Maroon and his weight. The NESN broadcaster got the chance to apologize to Maroon in person Thursday.

In November, Edwards said Maroon was “listed at 238 pounds” before noting “that was day one of training camp. I’ve got a feeling he’s had a few more pizzas between then and now.”

In response, Maroon made a $2,000 donation to Tampa Bay Thrives, a non-profit that helps those struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues.

“It was not intended to be mean-spirited. I went to Pat and explained that,” Edwards told The Athletic’s Joe Smith. “He got his feelings off his chest, and I listened to all of it. I was not going to walk away. I let him go as long as he could. I wanted him to know I respected him as much as any NHL player for lasting as long as he has. Every single player who has played in the NHL is an unbelievable athlete, and I made that clear.”

Edwards then said his words in November were taken out of context.

“I didn’t make fun of people who are struggling with mental illness. I didn’t use the word ‘fat’ at any time. Intentional misreading of my intent ran rampant.”

A Twitter thread from LightningInsider.com’s Erik Erlendsson alluded to the conversation between Edwards and Maroon not going well.

A report from Matt Porter of the Boston Globe claimed Maroon “dressed down” Edwards for 10 minutes inside the Lightning locker room after the 65-year-old approached the 13-year NHL vet.

“The length and intensity of the one-sided conversation had the attention of most everyone in the room,” Porter said.

After deciding to drop Newsmax from its channel lineup, DirecTV has faced threats of Congressional investigations. Radio host Mike Gallagher believes that’s warranted.

“They’re trying to come after all of us. They’re trying to figure out a way to stop every single conservative outlet in America,” Gallagher said. “First, it was One America News. Now it’s Newsmax. AT&T and DirecTV refuse to pay Newsmax the carriage fees which is crucial to these TV networks. They refuse to pay these fees they pay everybody else, and Newsmax said ‘Enough. You’ve gotta be fair here. You’re not being fair, and you’re not paying us all these carriage fees you’re paying all these others.’

“Newsmax is the fourth news network right now in the country, behind Fox, and MSNBC, and CNN. ‘Nope, sorry, you’re out.’ You can make the argument ‘They’re a private company’. Nope. No, no, no. There’s all kinds of government subsidies and tax breaks. Congress has to investigate this. It’s time to hold Congressional hearings for this absolute blatant effort to silence a point of view that a woke company like AT&T and DirecTV doesn’t approve of.”

Representatives Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) and Michael Waltz (R-FL) each appeared on Newsmax Thursday, and discussed the possibility of Congressional hearings on the matter, with Van Drew saying “I’m certainly going to push for hearings and discussions about this. I think it’s more than necessary.”

DirecTV continues to contend it removed Newsmax after the cable channel demanded a carriage fee, which the satellite provider was not interested in paying. Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy claims the channel is in the top 16 most-watched outlets on the service provider, warranting a carriage fee.

However, DirecTV countered by claiming that because Newsmax streams its programs for free on platforms like Roku, a carriage fee was not on the table.

With its removal from DirecTV, Newsmax’s reach has now decreased by 13 million homes.

Jim Nantz: Billy Packer One of the Great Analysts in Television History

Legendary college basketball analyst Billy Packer died earlier this week, and tributes began pouring in after the news was announced. Jim Nantz, who worked alongside Packer for many years, remembered his friend and colleague Friday morning.

During an appearance on CBS Mornings, Nantz told viewers Packer should be remembered as one of the all-time greats.

“I think Billy will go down in history as one of the greatest analysts in the history of sports television. I think that when you look at the pantheon of great analysts, you’ve got John Madden and you’ve got Billy Packer. You start right there. He blessed this network for a long time, from 1982 to 2008. One of my dearest friends. It’s been a restless night thinking of the Packer family, which I’m very close to. I got to speak to Billy the day before he died, and tell him I loved him.”

Nantz continued his praise for Packer — who announced 34 consecutive Final Fours, including each from 1991 through 2008 with Nantz — saying he was a steward of the game he loved so much.

“He was a genius. There was no one that could look at the field — in this case, the court — and see everything. He’s gonna be very much missed. He loved college basketball and he looked after it as a guardian of the sport. He’s just a giant. A giant heart, that’s all I can tell you.”

Keith Olbermann: Republicans Threatening Hearings Over Newsmax, DirecTV Spat Are Hypocrites

Newsmax is no longer found on DirecTV, and that decision has led to outcries from Congressional Republicans of “de-platforming” and “demonetization” of conservative voices. Podcaster Keith Olbermann believes those stances are poppycock.

Thursday, Rep. Michael Waltz (R-FL) told Newsmax that Congress has “a number of questions…that we’ll demand answers for”, adding that proceedings could go “as far as having public hearings”. Later in the day, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) told the cable outlet “This is about freedom, it’s about America. It’s about the right to have discourse and discussion about ideas and visions and the future of the country.”

“I’m certainly going to push for hearings and discussions about this,” Van Drew added. “I think it’s more than necessary — it’s absolutely important for the future of our nation.”

“For some reason, Representatives like Van Drew and Waltz keep leaving out one little detail here: Newsmax has always given its 24/7 brainwashing feed for free to carriers like Roku and DirecTV but suddenly it has demanded DirecTV pay Newsmax for Newsmax,” Olbermann said.

“DirecTV said ‘No, thanks’. So Waltz and Van Drew want Congressional hearings about one company deciding not to buy another company’s product, in America. Which, I believe, is called ‘communistic, socialistic, anti-capitalist terrorism!'”

The removal of Newsmax from DirecTV is the second time in a calendar year that the satellite provider has removed a conservative cable channel from its lineup. In April of 2022, OAN was removed.

After removing Newsmax from its channel lineup, DirecTV replaced it with The First, a conservative video platform that features the likes of Dana Loesch, Jesse Kelly, and Bill O’Reilly, among others.

“DirecTV values different viewpoints and perspectives and will always work to preserve expansive choice among a wide variety of entertainment and information services to appeal to the unique tastes and interests of our diverse customer base,” DirecTV Chief Content Officer Rob Thun said while announcing the addition of The First.

Scott Slade Will ‘Temporarily Step Away’ From WSB’s ‘Atlanta’s Morning News’

After 32 years as the host of Atlanta’s Morning News, Scott Slade has announced he will “temporarily step away from the early morning shift” on WSB.

Slade came to WSB in 1984 as an overnight host before becoming the station’s helicopter pilot and reporter. He ascended to the role of Atlanta’s Morning News host in 1991.

“I’m looking forward to what the future holds for me and WSB – this has been my radio home for 40 years,” Slade said. “I’m excited about what we’re going to create together for listeners, and I’m glad this will continue to be my radio home into the future. In the meantime, I look forward to sleeping in, spending more time with my family, taking up scuba diving, and flying my plane.”

Slade was recently inducted into the Georgia Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame in 2008.

“The ‘S’ in WSB stands for Scott,” said WSB Director of Branding and Programming Ken Charles. “His dedication to the show and station, and his commitment to excellence are unparalleled. He is truly the GOAT of morning radio!”

Tony Stewart Returning to FOX Sports NASCAR Booth For Daytona 500

NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart will return to the FOX Sports NASCAR booth in 2023 for select appearances, including the 2023 running of the Daytona 500.

The three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion will pair with longtime play-by-play announcer Mike Joy and analyst Clint Bowyer for the network’s 20th consecutive airing of “The Great American Race”.

In addition to calling the Daytona 500, Stewart will also work with Joy and Bowyer for the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 5th.

“I’m thrilled to be back in the FOX NASCAR booth for the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum and the Daytona 500 again this year,” Stewart said. “I was honored to call both last year and really enjoyed seeing the action from a different perspective and role, not to mention the sheer entertainment of sharing a booth with Clint and Mike. I’m looking forward to opening the new season with FOX and seeing what 2023 holds for the sport.”

Stewart was a member of the 2022 broadcast crew for NASCAR’s biggest race. He also joined the FOX Sports crew for NASCAR Cup Series races at Circuit of the Americas and Sonoma Raceway. Stewart — who is the owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, a participant in the NASCAR Cup Series — also worked as an analyst for the network’s coverage of two NHRA events in 2022.

The 2023 season marks NASCAR’s 75th anniversary, and also marks the 23rd consecutive season of FOX Sports’ coverage of the sport.

Brandon Tatum: Donald Trump Should Return To Facebook, Instagram

On Wednesday, Meta announced that it was reinstating former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts following a two-year suspension. Trump was locked out following the Jan 6th riots. 

Podcaster and radio host Brandon Tatum, a vocal Trump supporter, reacted to the news during his “Officer Tatum Podcast.” The former police officer turned media personality said the biggest question about the story centers on Trump’s desire to rejoin the platforms. 

“If he thinks he’s going to have a chance to win as the President of the United States of America, he needs to get into the conversation on social media,” said Tatum. “If he does, that will either help or hurt him.” 

Nick Clegg, Meta President for Global Affairs, said it’s up to Trump whether he wants to use Facebook and Instagram. Last October, Trump launched Truth Social in response to his ban on Big Tech. According to Reuters, Trump has 34 million followers on Facebook and 23 million on Instagram. 

“If he gets on social media and he does well and he’s presidential and he gains the minds and the hearts of people all over the country, he will win,” Tatum said. “If he gets on bashing and talking about [Ron] DeSantis, then that’s going to be a nail in the coffin for Donald Trump.” 

Tatum stated another benefit for Trump returning to Facebook and Instagram is that the former president will have the opportunity to control the media’s narrative about him. 

“He (Trump) will be able to write some wrongs, and I’m not saying wrongs that he did, I’m saying wrongs that they claim he did. He’ll be able to set the record straight. They said all kinds of stuff about Donald Trump and 99% percent of it was bull c***.”
