John Catsimatidis Teases 77 WABC Coming to FM

Many in the radio industry are concerned with electric vehicle manufacturers removing AM radios from their upcoming models. John Catsimatidis, owner of 77 WABC, won’t be going down without a fight.

According to a December report from The New York Times, most electric vehicle makers have dropped AM radio because the models generate more electromagnetic interference than gas-powered cars, which disrupts the reception of AM signals. AM radio proponents have argued that interference could be easily negated by the manufacturers, but claim the automakers are refusing to do so as a cost-saving measure.

“Rather than frustrate customers with inferior reception and noise, the decision was made to leave it off vehicles that feature eDrive technology,” BMW said in a statement to The Times.

Tesla, Audi, Porsche, and Volvo have all removed AM radio their electric vehicles, with Volkswagen and Ford also removing the band from select models.

In an interview with InsideRadio, Catsimatidis responded to a question about AM no longer being standard in electric vehicles by saying “Wait ’til you see the class action suit. We carry a big bat.”

When asked about the potential loss of AM radio and a shift to FM, the Red Apple Media owner said “Write this down. I’ve got something up my sleeve.”

A move to an FM signal would be the latest of several heritage AM talk brands making the shift to FM. In October of last year, New York all-news station 1010 WINS added an FM-simulcast on 92.3. That move followed KNX News in Los Angeles launching a simulcast on 97.1 FM in 2021 after broadcasting on the AM band for more than 100 years.

Peter Rosenberg: Gio’s Rant ‘Gimmick Infringement’ of Don La Greca

The war of words between WFAN’s Boomer & Gio and 98.7 ESPN New York’s The Michael Kay Show continued Monday, with a quip from Peter Rosenberg about a rant from Gregg Giannotti.

Giannotti, a Vikings fan, was discussing his viewing situation during Monday morning’s show as the franchise played the New York Giants. His wife, two daughters, mother, mother-in-law, and best friend joined him to watch the Super Wild Card game, and the WFAN host detailed that the situation grew more tense with each passing moment due to comments made by those in attendance.

Giannotti eventually admitted to yelling at his friend, and jokingly shouted “Not the time, Louise!” after his mother-in-law commented about how good the Giants had gotten during a Saquon Barkley touchdown run.

The rant didn’t go unnoticed by Rosenberg, however, and he replied to Giannotti’s video clip of the segment by saying “Fake Don Lagrecca (sic) much? This is called gimmick infringement”.

The comment from Rosenberg comes after Giannotti was critical of he and La Greca last week. Giannotti claimed the pair were “bootlicking” Michael Kay after walking back comments he made about getting a producer at the station fired by calling them “performance art”.

While criticising Kay, Giannotti could not identify Rosenberg, only calling him “whatever his face”.

“He’s gonna retire. It doesn’t matter whether you kiss his ass or not, it’s not gonna be the difference in you getting that job when he leaves,” Giannotti said of La Greca and Rosenberg. “Just stop it. Just stop kissing his ass.”

Rosenberg responded to the disapproval from Giannotti last week by tweeting “My favorite part of the trash talk from the guy on the fan is ‘pick on someone your own size Michael Kay… pick on me’…LOL who are you?!!!!”

Chris Stigall Added to Salem Media Podcast Network

From Philadelphia to Kansas City, Chris Stigall is making his mark with his humor and political savvy. Currently, Stigall hosts morning drive on “Philadelphia’s Morning Answer” on AM 990 and middays on KCMO Talk Radio. 

On Monday, Salem Media announced that “The Chris Stigall Podcast” was being added to the family of shows on the podcast network. Stigall’s show joins a list of shows that includes Dennis Prager, Charlie Kirk, Todd Starnes, Michelle Tafoya, Brandon Tatum, Dr. Sebastian Gorka and more. 

“As a radio guy my entire career, I wasn’t sure how the podcast version would be received when we launched,” Stigall said in a statement. 

“Our advertising partners who invested in the show early as well as the smartest audience in the digital space have helped our young podcast crest four million downloads, and we’re just getting started!”

Stigall’s career began as a writer’s intern on The Late Show with David Letterman, followed by work as a producer, news anchor, DJ, and even a brief stint as a staffer for a member of the United States House of Representatives `

“Chris Stigall is a special host who has developed a unique relationship with a very loyal audience,” said Salem Senior Vice President of Spoken Word, Phil Boyce. “We saw this when we brought him over to AM 990 The Answer a few years ago, and we know he will have the same reaction from audiences nationwide with his podcast.”

Ben Shapiro: Jon Stewart Makes Unwatchable Garbage

CNN continues to rehabilitate its image under CEO Chris Licht. Over the weekend. It was reported that the network was searching for a comedian to host one of its primetime programs. On Monday, two names surfaced, Bill Maher and Jon Stewart. The latter drew criticism from Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro. 

During his podcast Monday, Shapiro said that CNN’s credibility problem wouldn’t improve by adding Stewart to its lineup. 

“CNN is so serious about the news that now they are literally talking about adding Jon Stewart in order to do the news at CNN,” he said. “Which shows you how far things have gone. CNN has come full circle.”   

Back in 2004, ex-CNN host Tucker Carlson got into a heated exchange with Stewart  The former “Daily Show” host was a guest with Carlson and Paul Begala on CNN’s “Crossfire.” 

“Jon Stewart went on that show and said it was bad for America. What was truly bad for America was not the debate between Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson; what was truly bad for America was Jon Stewart smirking his way through political ignorance while pretending he knew what in the hell he was talking about,” said Shapiro. 

Shapiro said if CNN wants to take a more moderate approach with dissenting points of view, hiring a guy like Stewart would do the complete opposite. 

“They (CNN) still don’t have a Republican working for the network,” Shapiro added. “Now, they are going to have Jon Stewart or somebody like Jon Stewart doing some sort of political comedy at night.” 

Last year, in an interview with the New York Times, Chris Licht hinted that he would like to hire Jon Stewart if he became available. According to Apple Insider, Stewart signed a long-term deal with the company in 2020. 

“He’s making absolutely unwatchable garbage where he parrots woke talking points,” Shapiro said. 

Angelo Cataldi: Could Al Michaels Just Quit Already?

Angelo Cataldi has never been one to shy away from his feelings about any topic, and has been especially outspoken on his criticism of different broadcasters. Al Michaels was the target of Cataldi’s ire Monday morning for his lackluster performance during the Super Wild Card matchup on NBC Saturday.

“This is not easy for me. The man is an icon. I gotta tell ya, Al Michaels sucked the life out of the game he did,” Cataldi said. “This is the first thing I don’t understand: Al Michaels — even though now he’s on Amazon — still did an NBC game. They made sure he was getting one playoff game, but they didn’t bring the partner from Amazon, Kirk Herbstreit. They brought in someone who doesn’t do color analysis in Tony Dungy. I love Tony Dungy, but not in that role. Tony Dungy is bland and boring in that role. He was bland and boring and it was awful!

“It’s 27-0 and Al Michaels is in a bad mood. And Al Michaels is talking about the overtime rules, and he says ‘We won’t have to worry about that in this game’. He’s dissing the game! A few weeks ago, he went crazy on a bad game and just ripped it apart. He said ‘I’m not here to sell a used car’. He said this on the air! Then you get to the end of the game, it’s a thriller. A great comeback by Doug Pederson! The fourth down chances he takes, the brilliant decisions he makes. And they’re lining up for the field goal, and I want you to hear how he sucked the life out of the moment,” Cataldi said before playing the clip of Michaels’ game-winning call.

“The guy’s an icon!,” Cataldi shouted. “A Hall of Fame broadcaster, and he never even called the play! He never told you who won the game! It was unbelievably brutal! How do you go from ‘Do you believe in miracles?’ to ‘There’s a flag on the field’?”

Cataldi concluded by saying the 78-year-old Michaels needs to retire if that’s the best effort he can muster. The 94WIP host then compared the call from Michaels to that of Jaguars radio announcer Frank Frangie.

Michaels was not the only NFL announcer to feel Cataldi’s wrath Monday morning. He also criticized Tony Romo, as well as Daryl “Moose” Johnston, and Cris Collinsworth.

Sean Payton Tells Colin Cowherd He Talked To Teams About Jobs While Working For FOX

Nobody thought that Sean Payton was done coaching football for good when he left the New Orleans Saints at the end of last season. He spent this year with FOX as a studio analyst, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t actively thinking about being back on an NFL sideline.

Payton was a guest on The Herd on Monday and told Colin Cowherd that he had a few casual conversations during the season about a potential return.

“I have talked to a few teams,” he said. “That was just done with permission through the Saints.”

He listed the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and the Houston Texans as teams he has already had contact with.

Any deal Payton makes has to be approved by the Saints, who still have him under contract. When Cowherd asked Sean Payton to speculate what the team would want in return, the coach said that discussion was up to the Saints, but he would guess it would be a draft pick in the mid-to-late first round.

During the season, Jay Glazer reported that the Panthers had reached out to him about playing middleman to set up an interview with Payton. At the time, Glazer told FOX Sports Radio that he did not see a way that Payton would want to coach that team.

To the contrary, Payton says he expects to meet with the team’s owner David Tepper in New York later this week.

Albert Breer reported last month that Sean Payton has enjoyed living and working in Southern California. He suggested that if the Los Angeles Chargers do not make a change, he may be inclined to return to FOX in 2023.

Payton didn’t directly acknowledge that report but did insinuate that he feels any urgency about taking a job this year.

“If nothing happens this year and we go next year, that changes things considerably,” he said in regard to what the Saints would expect in return.

Howard Stern has long been referred to as “The King of All Media”. In 2023, one could argue the moniker would also apply to Joe Rogan, and the podcast host took a shot at Stern on his podcast episode Saturday.

While being joined by comedians Shane Gillis and Matt McCusker, the topic eventual turned to Stern, who Rogan took aim at for his current conduct.

“Look — what he did — people to this day make fun of Howard Stern ’cause of who he is now and the way he behaves now. That guy’s the man,” said Rogan. “He was the f—ing pioneer — when he was the king of all media and he was telling everybody to suck his dick.

“And the FCC was going after him. The government was fining him. They were fining his businesses f—ing millions of dollars. And he was out there doing wild shit on the radio. And now he’s woke. It’s crazy.”

Rogan is not the first commentator to label Stern as “woke”. The longtime radio host has seen several others believe his schtick has changed over the years.

Stern was an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, and admitted in November that MSNBC was his preferred choice for cable news. The SiriusXM host has also jokingly considered his own run for President, adding that actor Bradley Cooper would serve as his running mate.

Landry Locker: Al Michaels Lost His Excuses Saturday Night

Al Michaels has been on the receiving end of some harsh criticism following his call of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ come-from-behind win Saturday night in the Super Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs. His call of the game winning field goal has been called everything from lackluster to boring. Landry Locker of In the Loop on Sports Radio 610 in Houston took it a step further.

“This was as bad of a call in the history of ever,” he said Monday morning.

Locker added that Tony Dungy didn’t do Michaels any favors as his broadcast partner.

During the NFL’s regular season, Michaels’s work on Thursday Night Football came under some scrutiny. Many pointed out that he seemed detached from the action. He often answered that criticism by saying this year’s Amazon Prime Video slate was as bad of a season of games as he has ever called.

According to Landry Locker, Saturday night’s performance proved that there isn’t any real validity to that excuse.

“He said it was just about the quality of the game and he had to grab the audience. He lost that excuse this Saturday. One of the biggest comebacks in playoff history and Al Michaels couldn’t stay awake.”

“It’s over. It’s done. Go call Raiders games,” John Lopez added referencing Michaels’s colleague Brent Musberger, who was removed from ESPN’s biggest college football games after the 2014 season and left the network entirely in 2017. Musberger served as the voice of the Raiders from 2018 through 2021.

Al Michaels answered criticism from Landry Locker and other detractors on Monday morning. He told Andrew Marchand of The New York Post that the idea that he was not interested in the game or excited by it coming down to the final play was “Internet compost”.

Jack Morris Won’t Return to Detroit Tigers Booth

Hall of Fame pitcher Jack Morris will not be returning to the Detroit Tigers television booth in 2023.

Detroit News reporter Chris McCosky claims Morris will not be part of the Bally Sports Detroit television crew in 2023, and the network is expanding the role of Craig Monroe.

In 2021, Morris was suspended after using an Asian accent during a broadcast while Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani was at the plate. Morris was ultimately suspended for three weeks. He completed a “bias training” from the network during his suspension.

In 2022, Morris also received criticism after the Tigers announced starting pitcher Matt Manning was forced to leave an early season game with shoulder discomfort, stating “I guess I can leave. I’ve had right shoulder discomfort for about 20 years.”

Morris joined the Tigers television crew in a regular role in 2019 — splitting the workload with Kirk Gibson, Dan Petry, and Monroe. The five-time All-Star had also announced games for three season from 2015 through 2017 in a more sporadic setting.

He won World Series championships with the Tigers, Blue Jays, and Twins during his playing career that ended in 1994. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 2018.

NFL Releases Divisional Round Playoff Schedule

The wait is over as NFL fans try to figure out how to plan their weekends. The league has released its schedule for the Divisional Round of the 2023 playoffs.

Six games over the course of three days is still a relatively new phenomenon for round 1. With only four games on the docket in round two, the league has built its TV schedule around putting big names and big markets in prime time.

Both top seeds will play on Saturday. The first game belongs to NBC. Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth will call the Chiefs and Jaguars in Kansas City at 4:30 PM. That will be followed by an NFC East showdown on FOX between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles.

The NFL is giving the winner of the final contest on Super Wild Card weekend as fair of a schedule as possible. Either the Dallas Cowboys or Tampa Bay Buccaneers will face the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s late game on FOX. Tony Romo and Jim Nantz will be on the call of the day’s earlier game, which sees a rematch between the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills.

Emotions will certainly be running high for the early contest. It was a Monday Night Football matchup between the Bengals and Bills in week 16 when Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field and had to be revived by first responders.

Championship matchup details have also been released by the NFL. The NFC will play in the early game on January 29 with the AFC Championship game closing out the night.
