‘The Daily Show’ Sees Favorable Ratings in Trevor Noah’s Final Shows

0

It’s a near-impossible task to succeed when following a popular longtime host of a well-known show. That was the big unknown once Jon Stewart left Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” in 2015 after a 16-year stint. The reins were given to Trevor Noah, a South African comedian then relatively unknown in America and briefly appeared as a “Daily Show” correspondent in 2015.

The decision to go to Noah turned out to be a success. “The Daily Show” still remained a notable presence on cable, while the network’s other late-night attempts as lead-outs — like Larry Wilmore’s “Nightly Show” and David Spade’s “Lights Out” — quickly came and went. As a result, “The Daily Show” expanded its Monday thru Wednesday episode lengths to 45 minutes.

But back on Sep. 28, the show’s near future went into flux when Noah made the surprise announcement that he’d depart. It was also reported that even Comedy Central executives were surprised by the news. The first 30 minutes of that night’s edition drew 429,000 total viewers including 174,000 within the key 25-54 demographic, according to Nielsen Media Research; its latter 15 minutes: 306,000 viewers, 130,000 adults 25-54. It was the top marks of the show for that week (Sep. 26-29).

For Monday thru Thursday nights from Oct. 31-Nov. 17 and Nov. 28-Dec. 1, “The Daily Show” for 11-11:30 p.m. averaged 417,000 viewers and 149,000 adults 25-54; the 11:30-11:45 p.m. segment, usually the interview portion, averaged 288,000 viewers and 112,000 adults 25-54. As noted in the cable averages below, demo figures for “The Daily Show” compare favorably to almost all of the cable news (except for the dominant Fox News Channel).

The top marks for the interview portion within that aforementioned period occurred on Nov. 28 which featured actor Will Smith as he promoted his new film drama “Emancipation.” It was Smith’s first late-night interview since he had slapped the face of comedian Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars back in March. It delivered 362,000 viewers and 162,000 adults 25-54.

Noah’s final week on “The Daily Show” achieved above-average viewership for the first half-hour; normal figures for its latter 15 minutes. They were:

Monday, Dec. 5, 11:00-11:30 p.m.: 450,000 viewers

Monday, Dec. 5, 11:30-11:45 p.m. (Sociology professor Tressie McMillan Cottom discusses Twitter): 307,000 viewers

Tuesday, Dec. 6, 11:00-11:30 p.m.: 437,000 viewers

Tuesday, Dec. 6, 11:30-11:45 p.m. (Michael Strahan & Sheryl Lee Ralph): 244,000 viewers

Wednesday, Dec. 7, 11:00-11:30 p.m.: 436,000 viewers

Wednesday, Dec. 7, 11:30-11:45 p.m. (Roger Federer): 333,000 viewers

Thursday, Dec. 8, 11:00-11:30 p.m. (finale; guest Neal Brennan): 443,000 viewers

Of course, these numbers pale in comparison to Jon Stewart’s exit (3.47 million on Aug. 6, 2015) and Noah’s hosting debut (3.42 million combined from multiple Viacom-owned cable networks on Sep. 28, 2015). The caveats include that Stewart departed on a night highly watched on cable television overall thanks to the first Republican presidential candidate debate of the 2016 election (with Donald Trump). And there are significantly fewer cable subscribers now than back then. According to industry observer Anthony Crupi (link: https://twitter.com/crupicrupicrupi/status/1598701463701790721), by Sep. 2015, 98.2 million U.S. households were subscribed to cable television; by Sep. 2022, there were 62.2 million. That’s a 37 percent decline with a continued downward trend in the coming years. It is an even steeper decline when only factoring young adult consumers who more likely favor streaming and online content over linear television.

Jimmy Pitaro Praises Experimentation & Bob Iger At Sports Video Group Summit

0

Jimmy Pitaro has worked within the Walt Disney Company since 2010. He was hired by Bob Iger, who was the chief executive officer of the company at the time, to work within its Disney Interactive division. Iger was also the executive who named Pitaro the new president of ESPN and co-chair of Disney Media Networks in 2018, and was instrumental in his quest of innovation to effectively position the company to adapt to the next generation of digital media.

“Without Bob Iger, I’m not here at ESPN,” Pitaro said while attending the Sports Video Group Summit in New York, N.Y. “Bob’s a huge sports fan. To be effective, you need to be a fan; you can’t fake it.”

It was announced that Iger was returning as chief executive officer of the Walt Disney Company last month, concluding what ended up being a short stint in retirement. He and Pitaro peak regularly whether it is over the phone, text or Zoom both about business and their fandom of the New York Yankees.

“I have a boss; I have a mentor who is a passionate sports fan and someone who I can learn a ton from,” Pitaro said. “Having Bob back is great for ESPN and I’m very pleased to have him back as my boss.”

Pitaro, now chairman of ESPN and sports content, stated that he has not yet spoken to Iger pertaining to specific aspects of future strategy, but figures to continue emphasizing alternate broadcasts. Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli, colloquially known as the Manningcast, derived from Peyton Manning seeing Kirk Herbstreit commentate a college football playoff game from his basement at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Manning then contacted Pitaro and asked him if there would be a way to have him do the same thing – and it has subsequently evolved into what it is today.

Alternate broadcasts and live sports as a whole keep people coming to ESPN, especially on its linear platforms. Pitaro noted that out of the top 100 live broadcasts in 2022 thus far, 98 of them have been live sporting events, part of why the business continues to thrive despite cord-cutting, social media distractions and other headwinds.

“It’s the power of live sports,” Pitaro said. “…People are spending much more time consuming live sports than anything else live. I think live news ratings are just dependent on the political cycles, but for sports, it seems to be pretty constant.”

ESPN has been producing and airing alternate broadcasts since the 1990s, but caught what Pitaro calls “lightning in a bottle” creating Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli. Since that broadcast began in the 2021-22 NFL season, the network has launched Sunday Night Baseball with Kay-Rod and the NBA in Stephen A’s World.

“We’re going to continue to experiment,” Pitaro expressed. “There’s no real formula here. We’ve tried alternate broadcasts that haven’t worked…We’re okay with failure here as long as we learn from it and get better. We’re going to continue to try new things here.”

An aspect of the ratings that is out of the control of ESPN is in the quality of the games the network broadcasts and Pitaro stated the last few weeks have been weaker in terms of quality. One part of the media rights deal between Disney and the National Football League is the addition of flex scheduling starting next season, meaning the chance to air higher quality matchups can be ensured.

There is undoubtedly an expectation of stellar performance across the board regardless of the sport. Pitaro is tasked with overseeing the network’s parallel paths; those being its linear channels and its direct-to-consumer platform: ESPN+.

“We’ve got to get it right and we have to show up every single day,” Pitaro said. “There are no off days. Look, we’re not perfect. Let me be clear. Our production is not perfect; our executives do not execute perfectly, but we do have a pretty high standard at ESPN and The Walt Disney Company.”

As some networks look to prioritize cord-cutting, Pitaro views linear television as a primary part of its business model. While the conversation around media encompasses digital growth and cord-cutting, ESPN’s outright linear television ratings rose 10% during the past fiscal year and those in primetime experienced 16% growth. Surely, it has been profitable for the network for many years, but Pitaro is cognizant of the change taking place as more consumers transition to watching live sports on other platforms of dissemination.

“We are continuing to acquire rights and invest in the traditional platform,” Pitaro said. “At the same time, pretty much every deal we do and we’ve done over the last 4.5 years since we’ve launched ESPN+ has had a direct-to-consumer component.”

NFL Sunday Ticket will transition into a streaming service, according to a statement made by National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell in an interview with CNBC, and DirecTV has had its rights for nearly three decades. Yet it has been reported that many companies have been involved in the bidding process, including Apple, Amazon and ESPN.

“We let the league know that we very much value that product,” Pitaro said. “It’d be interesting to see how this plays out. We typically don’t comment on league negotiations or discussions but I will tell you – and I’ve been consistent on this from day one- that we value that product.”

The proliferation of sports betting has led to its legalization in certain areas of the United States, resulting in the expansion of sports books and concomitant betting content. ESPN partnered with Caesars Sportsbook to create branded studios in Las Vegas and airs plenty of sports betting content.

It is representative of an area of future growth for ESPN and Pitaro spoke about ideas the network has in ways to implement it into its presentation. Some of these possibilities include potentially creating a watch-and-bet experience or a watch-and-buy experience in which consumers can directly interact and immerse themselves in the game experience.

“Our research shows us that our fans are good here,” Pitaro said. “They expect this from us – they’re not just okay with it – but they expect us to be doing more. What does that mean? It means creating a more seamless experience….They want to be able to place a bet without a lot of friction.”

As an executive within the Walt Disney Company, Pitaro has to think about the immersion of sports betting not just in terms of how it impacts ESPN, but how it impacts the venture as a whole.

“The way it’s come back is that our Disney fans are okay with this as well,” he said. “We’re still in the exploratory phase, but we certainly believe we can be doing more there.”

The advantage to ESPN+ is its unlimited real estate in terms of producing and distributing content. In the past, the network had to turn down certain content ideas because there was simply a lack of space to program them on the linear side. Now with the advent of technologies enabling nonlinear broadcast transmission, ESPN is able to create more programming and offer it in a multitude of different locations.

The growth of women’s sports is a priority for ESPN and drives aggregate viewership levels. Pitaro expressed how he received a call from his father last year pertaining to his watching more WNBA games because of the on-court product. Despite the network’s 10-year media rights deal with the WNBA expiring “relatively soon,” Pitaro delineated that the network will continue to invest in the space, in addition to NCAA women’s sports

“It’s becoming more and more in the zeitgeist,” Pitaro said of the WNBA, “and I think that’s kind of chicken and egg, but from our perspective – if we build it, they will come. If we give these games; these leagues; these sports more exposure, people are going to show up.”

Pitaro is excited to once again work with Iger in developing ESPN and having a voice in guiding the direction of the Walt Disney Company. In fact, Pitaro has currently been tasked by Iger to work with some of his colleagues at the company “to look at the structure of the entire enterprise.”

“A lot of the games that we’re airing right now we acquired through deals that Bob was at the table for,” Pitaro said. “We need a little bit more time. Bob and I need to sit down and talk through what’s transpired over the last few years.”

As ESPN aims to continue living up to its slogan as the “Worldwide Leader in Sports,” it has signature live studio programming and what may seem like an interminable number of media rights deals with sporting leagues around the world. Whatever the future holds, Pitaro is prepared and energized to continue to conceive new ideas that push the boundary in sports media.

“Our product needs to continue to advance,” he said. “ESPN; the ESPN App; ESPN+ – [they are] very good products right now. Personalized; contemporary; modern; they’re easy to navigate. We’re constantly focused on improving them…We don’t want to be a solution looking for a problem here, but that’s something that’s on the table, but in general, sports betting; gamification; free-to-play gaming could be an element as well – all that is being looked at as well.”

Mike Francesa Admits ‘There’s A Lot of Truth’ To Potential Mike and The Mad Dog Reunion On First Take

0

A report surfaced yesterday linking former WFAN afternoon host Mike Francesa to a reunion with former partner Chris “Mad Dog” Russo on First Take. On The Mike Francesa Podcast Tuesday, he admitted there’s truth to that rumor.

“I know there was a story written yesterday. The story had a lot of — I wouldn’t say it was 100% accurate, but it had a lot of truth to it. I’m gonna tell you exactly what happened,” Francesa began. “They called me last year and wanted me to surprised Dog and Stephen A. on First Take. Dog has been doing the show once a week with Stephen A. They wanted me to surprise them and go on. I was a little leery of surprising anyone. I felt better if they knew about it.

Francesa then claimed a nasty cold kept him from participating in the show.

“We went back and forth trying to find a date. We agreed on a date and I had a bad cold…so I passed on that day. Think it was in March. Said we’d get back to ’em. We never got back to each other again, and that’s where it’s been.”

He added there’s a chance in the next couple of months he could make an appearance on the show.

“I don’t know how it got out,” Francesa said. “It didn’t get out from me. But it is true that there was conversations. They did ask me to do it. They did not talk to me about any offer to do it on a permanent basis or anything like that. It was — as far as I knew — a one time thing. That was my understanding at the time. We haven’t discussed it since last April, maybe May.”

He concluded by saying he hadn’t hear from the folks at First Take in awhile, but when the discussions ended, they wanted him to be apart of a show.

Roddy Jones Explains Why It Is Hard for Broadcasters To Prepare For Bowl Games

0

College football’s bowl season is not what it once was. So many players are now absent for their postseason game, whether that is because they are in the process of transferring to another school or because they have decided to skip the game and prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft. Roddy Jones of the ACC Network says it is something that bothers everyone, including those calling the game.

Jones was a guest on 92.9 The Game’s John & Hugh Tuesday morning in Atlanta. Hugh Douglas asked Jones how he felt about the postseason and what they now mean for expectations for a team in the following season.

“It’s tough to take anything from them, to be honest with you, because you have rosters that are so depleted,” he answered. “I mean Utah played with a running back at corner last year.”

Roddy Jones said that the depleted Utah secondary was directly responsible for Ohio State receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s record-breaking performance in the Rose Bowl.

He also noted that the trend isn’t just limited to players. Even coaches have changed his expectations for how he has to prepare to call a bowl game.

“I’m doing a bowl game that neither team has an offensive coordinator. I mean, you look at the Fenway Bowl. Neither team has a head coach or quarterback.”

Roddy Jones will partner with Wes Durham and Taylor Davis to call two bowl games this season. They will work the New Orleans Bowl on December 21st and the Pinstripe Bowl on December 29. Both games are on ESPN.

FOX Sports Inks Multi-Year Deal With MLS

0

Major League Soccer has announced a new four-year deal with FOX Sports that will continue to see MLS air on the family of networks, ending a longstanding relationship the league had with ESPN.

34 regular season and 8 playoff matches each season will air across FOX Sports, FS1, and FOX Deportes. The deal also adds 15 regular season matches on FOX, the most ever by an English-language network in league history.

The MLS Cup will continue to air each year on FOX, as well as FOX Deportes.

The deal compliments the landmark decision by MLS to partner with Apple for MLS Season Pass, which will be make every MLS match available to fans with no blackout restrictions.

“These broadcast industry leaders continue to demonstrate their deep commitment to MLS and soccer,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. “Our linear agreements, along with our partnership with Apple, are the culmination of a series of collaborative discussions to provide our fans with the most expansive and accessible lineup of programming MLS and our sport in the U.S. and Canada have ever seen – and by a significant margin.”

The deal runs from 2023 through the conclusion of the 2026 season, where FOX Sports will also air the World Cup, hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada.

The deal also removes ESPN from the linear television package of Major League Soccer for the first time since the league’s inception in 1996.

Vince McMahon Plotting WWE Comeback Amid New Allegations

0

Will Vince McMahon make a return to the WWE? That is reportedly his plan according to the Wall Street Journal.

The company’s former CEO and Chairman stepped down in July after it was revealed that he used company money to make payments to cover up sexual misconduct accusations. Joe Palazzolo and Ted Mann report that over five months later, McMahon has told confidants that he believes he received bad advice. The news comes amid two new allegations against him.

“He has said that he received bad advice from people close to him to step down and that he now believes the allegations and investigations would have blown over had he stayed” the article says.

In their article, Palazzolo and Mann reveal that lawyers for former wrestling referee Rita Chatterton have demanded nearly $12 million in damagers. Chatterton accused McMahon of raping her three decades ago, a claim Vince McMahon denies.

Palazzolo and Mann also write that “a lawyer for a former spa manager said that Mr. McMahon assaulted his client in 2011 at a California resort”. This is the first time that attack has been reported on by the media.

New faces have stepped up to run the company since Vince McMahon stepped away. His daughter, Stephanie McMahon, and president Nick Khan took over as co-CEOs. Stephanie’s husband Paul Levesque, known to fans as Triple H, has served as Chief Content Officer. Under their leadership, WWE stockholders have seen their stakes in the company rise by over $8 per share.

The Wall Street Journal column did not reveal any details about McMahon’s plans or what opposition he might face.

Robert Griffin III Apologizes For Using Racial Slur on ‘Monday Night Countdown’

0

ESPN NFL analyst Robert Griffin III has apologized on Twitter after using a racial slur on Monday Night Countdown last night.

While discussing the rise of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, Griffin III used a racial slur to describe those who had doubted Hurts.

“I think he proved all those jiggaboos wrong,” Griffin said. The term is a racial slur meant to disparage African-Americans. Don Imus was dismissed from his morning show role at WFAN in 2007 after the contemptuous slur — among others — about the Rutgers women’s basketball team was used on his show.

Griffin III took to Twitter to apologize for the remark, claiming he misspoke.

“(I) was trying to say “those bug-a-boos” in reference to haters and doubters,” Griffin said, before adding he understands the “historical context” of the term.

As of publication, ESPN has yet to comment publicly on the matter.

Angelo Cataldi Believes He Deserved To Be Fired In 1993

0

Angelo Cataldi is nearing the end of his career at WIP. He has been the station’s morning show host for 33 years. The station is giving him a proper sendoff, but in a new interview with sister station KYW, Cataldi says that maybe he didn’t deserve to be on air this long.

He told his former intern Dave Uram, who conducted the interview, that he has plenty of regrets from his time on air. One of the greatest is a joke he cracked about Phillies outfielder Jim Eisenreich in 1993.

A reporter from Philadelphia Magazine was in studio with Cataldi, who joked that Eisenreich, who dealt with Tourettes Syndrome, was actually going in on then-Phillies manager Jim Fregosi. When the reporter published his quote, Cataldi felt ashamed.

“What’s wrong with me? Why would I do something like that?” Angelo Cataldi said to Uram. “And it was being swept up in the moment trying to be funny, when it wasn’t funny. And that one’s always carried with me. I’ve carried that with me all these years.”

Cataldi was fortunate that people were more accepting of that kind of humor in 1993, but he now says “they shouldn’t have been.”

He admits that it is hard to say he learned a lesson from that moment that stayed with him forever. He still makes similar mistakes.

“I’ll use this as an opportunity,” Cataldi said in recounting the story. “I’m sorry for all of you. I was trying to do my job and got too swept up in it. You deserve better.”

Before the start of the 2022 NFL season, Angelo Cataldi announced that he would stay with 94WIP until the Eagles are done. Given the run the team has been on this season, that could mean Cataldi won’t be done until the Lombardi Trophy is handed out in February.
