Ben Shapiro Accuses WaPost of Covering Up Crime Crisis Until After Election

0

Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro is criticizing the Washington Post for changing its position on big-city crime.

“The Washington Post has been downplaying crime for months and months and months until just after the midterm elections were over,” he said on his radio show Wednesday.

Shapiro took exception to recent reporting by the Post which said that minorities are being disproportionately affected by crime in major cities.

“Oh, you don’t say.” He stated. “I thought it was the rural areas, I was told it was a bunch of white people in Vermont that were shooting each other.”

Shapiro said he is frustrated with the reporting by mainstream media outlets who he claims are ignoring the true reality of the crime epidemic.

“It’s almost like you held this story until just after the election, Washington Post,” he said. “The Post visited nine of these places which have seen the highest murder rates.”

Shapiro said many of those crime-ridden cities are spread across the South and Midwest.

“Now they are going to report on the crime crisis that disproportionately targets disproportionately Black men,” he said. “I’m glad that we can now talk about this openly.”

Keith Olbermann: Elon Musk, John Malone Working From Same Playbook

0

Podcaster Keith Olbermann believes that there are similarities between Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter and John Malone’s purchase of CNN.

On his most recent “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” podcast, he said Musk bought Twitter under the guise of the platform being a “dangerous and rigged plot” against the right. He said Musk’s actions were comparable to the position taken by CNN’S new boss, John Malone.

“Musk claimed that Twitter 2.0 is centrist, balanced, and corrective, “stated Olbermann. “It is moving the proverbial Overton window in a way never dreamt of before.”

Olbermann said in Twitter’s case it’s trying to tell 400 million users that what two months ago was the far right, is now the center and what two months ago was the center, is now the far and “dangerous left.”

“Did Musk design this play?” Olbermann said. “Did he wildly overspend on Twitter intentionally just to manipulate its politics?”

Olbermann concluded that Musk did not plan things to go as they have at Twitter.

“When ultra-conservative media baron John Malone bought CNN and hired a hatchet man like Chris Licht to gut its successful shows and push its conservative talent, Malone didn’t say I am buying CNN to kill.”

Olbermann added that Malone first “softened” up CNN by saying that the network needed to get back to neutrality like Brett Baier’s newscasts which is exactly the way Musk bought Twitter and positioned himself as a centrist who backed Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Chuck Swirsky Embodies ‘Always A Pleasure’

0

It’s hard to imagine there are any more positive thinking people in the world than Chuck Swirsky. If you don’t believe me, just check out his daily tweets. Swirsky has a lot to be upbeat about, he’s doing what he’s always wanted to, and now he’s written a book.

Always a Pleasure” is his creation, putting thoughts on paper, or iPad or whatever, about stories and people he’s encountered over the more than 40-years he’s been in the business.

The title is aptly accurate. Chuck is always a pleasure to be around and is one of the most supportive people I’ve ever met. He encourages those that need it. Swirsky always has time for people in the business and those trying to get into this crazy racket. I’ve seen and experienced it for myself, so trust me when I tell you, it’s the truth.

There are those that have worked multiple decades in play-by-play, and I’ll bet each and every one of them has been asked at some point, ‘hey, why don’t you write a book?’. Sounds easy enough, I’m sure. But when you really think about it, how can a person be expected to fit 40 plus years of work into a book that wouldn’t be the size of a dictionary?

More on that in a moment. I was wondering what makes someone in Swirsky’s position to write a book. So, I asked him. He outlined the main reason he decided to put pen to paper and tell some of his favorite stories and recall good memories.

“Over the past several years I was approached by several publishers and writers who were interested in detailing my journey in sports broadcasting, featuring my stops calling major college athletics and NBA basketball in addition to sports talk.” Swirsky told me. “I was reluctant to do so but a year ago I had a change of heart knowing 2022-23 Bulls season would be my 25th in the NBA, including my 2-thousandth NBA play-by-play game.”

Swirsky didn’t use a sportswriter or an author to tell his tale. “For years I have saved notes and decided to write the book myself, in my own words. I love my job. I have no desire to retire. I want to continue broadcasting Bulls game for many more years as long as my health and clarity allow me to do so.” he said.

“I love working with Bill Wennington and each and every day I have the same enthusiasm of calling a Bulls game like I did as a five-year-old child calling games off a TV. I have the utmost respect for the Reinsdorf  family and our entire organization.  I just felt this was the right time to write a book.”

I have followed Swirsky’s career closely and gotten to know him over the years. Growing up in Chicago, I was fortunate enough to hear him in his early days here, at the old WCFL (now ESPN 1000), where he became one of the pioneers of sports talk radio. He’s called games on radio and television.

For DePaul, Michigan, select White Sox games, the Raptors and now over the last nearly 2 decades, the Bulls. That’s a lot of experience and a lot of experiences for one person. It made ‘editing’ the book a little difficult.

“I could have easily written another 100 pages featuring additional sports personalities and stories.” Swirsky said. “But I elected to highlight specifics of a timeline allowing the reader to understand that my quest to reach a childhood goal of broadcasting NBA basketball was met with challenges, setbacks and ultimately persevering through hard work, focus, passion and positivity.”

Writing books can be a way to look back on a career. Swirsky if far from done. He never really reflected on things, because he was always looking forward. But the retrospective allowed him to realize a few things along the way.

“I would say this. I am my own worst critic.  I very seldom look back on my career. While I was writing “Always A Pleasure” I had to stop and truly reflect how blessed I  am to be in the position where  I am today. I never take it for granted. Never have. Never will.” Swirsky said.  “Nothing is easy. It’s hard. This business can be exhilarating yet so difficult. I never get too high nor too low although I’m very sensitive and my insecurities get the best of me which is probably not a good thing , especially in radio-television.”

In looking back there’s bound to be a few lessons learned from the past. Swirsky did find a few things in writing the book that he remembered, educated him along the way. “I learned that anyone who applies themselves, making  a commitment to work on their  skill set, and their weaknesses through hard work, dedication, passion and purpose, can be successful.” he said.

“For example, not every professional athlete is going to hit .330. Let’s say another player is hitting .240. What is keeping him in the big leagues? Is it his  glove,  his ability to play multiple positions?  His  character in the locker-room? The same principle is in effect in our industry. Maximize your strengths and do it with a great attitude, humility and kindness.”

Swirsky’s book details his interactions with some very familiar people in the business and the sports world. “I have plenty of stories featuring some of the biggest names in sports ranging from Hall of Fame baseball star Willie Mays who many consider perhaps the greatest player of all time to Kobe Bryant who left our world way too soon.” he says. “When you’ve been a professional broadcaster for 46 years, one  meets many, many players, coaches, executives, media and sports personalities along the way.”

The one thing you can say about Swrisky, is he is real. There’s no pretense or facade. A genuine human being that is interested in what people have to say. Athletes, coaches, broadcasters and yes, even fans. His book has been reviewed by some of the greats. Mike Breen, Chris Bosh and even Steph Curry. Here’s the 2-time NBA MVP’s take on Swirsky and the book.

Having known Chuck since my days as a still-developing youth player in Toronto, where my dad was a member of the Raptors, I can attest to the fact that his passion for people and basketball is deep and sincere.

Chuck’s unique desire to mentor young people, especially minorities and those of different cultures and backgrounds, will help inspire those who share the same dreams, dreams that enabled him to persevere to the top of his profession.

I’m proud of Chuck, and excited that others can become enlightened by his exciting broadcasting journey, which includes nearly 25 years in the NBA and, of course, a trio of Curry family members shooting from the stars, just like him.

A book written by someone as accomplished in this industry as Swirsky draws interest because of who he is. But the Bulls’ play-by-play man is always thinking of others and trying to help where he can, just like Curry said. Along with stories, he lends his knowledge and relates it to those who are already in broadcasting and those trying to get in.

“I’m hoping those in our industry who read the book even those outside the radio-tv, new media field will come away knowing that perseverance is a powerful resource to help withstand the emotional heartache of rejection, disappointment and loneliness.” said Swirsky. He adds, “I have experienced everything. The good. The bad. The ugly. I’m talking all levels.  My message is to stay true to your core values. In this case,  my foundation is  built on respect,  kindness, honesty, sincerity and selflessness.”

Given the opportunity to beam about the finished product, Swirsky in typical fashion, deflected any praise. Simply saying, “I am very humbled and appreciative of  the professionalism of the book’s publisher, Eckhartz Press. They allowed me to be me. That’s all I wanted. Mission accomplished. I am grateful.”

The entire industry should be grateful for people like Swirsky. There are so few in the business who are as kind and caring as he is. There are just as few people that take interest in others, and help mentor the next generation like Chuck. Inspiring stories, a career chronicle and life lessons, “Always a Pleasure” is going to be on my must-read list for the holidays. Congrats “Swirsk” keep up the great work.

98.7 ESPN New York Shuffles Lineup, DiPietro & Rothenberg Expanding To Four Hours

0

Andrew Marchand and Ryan Glasspiegel of The New York Post reported yesterday and ESPN has since confirmed that 98.7 ESPN New York is expanding its local programming. The station’s morning show DiPietro & Rothenberg will increase to four hours as part of a revamped daily lineup which will go into effect on January 3rd.

DiPietro & Rothenberg currently airs on the station from 5a-8a while ESPN Radio’s national morning show — Keyshawn, JWill, & Max — airs from 8a-10a. By extending the local show, 98.7 ESPN New York will now look to compete locally in all four hours with WFAN’s Boomer & Gio.

Vinny DiMarco, market manager, ESPN New York said, “Our fans will have the opportunity to listen to local coverage on 98.7 ESPN FM all throughout the day.” He continued, “Both DiPietro & Rothenberg as well as Bart & Hahn will give fans valuable insight, expertise, and live reaction about all things New York sports. The change also provides more opportunities for our partners to align with the station and achieve their marketing goals and objectives.”

Additionally, ESPN Radio’s Bart & Hahn will move back to 98.7 ESPN New York as an exclusively local show. Bart Scott played a portion of his NFL career for the New York Jets, and worked at both WFAN and 98.7 ESPN New York before the show moved to the national stage. Alan Hahn has spent more than 25 years working in New York media with Newsday, MSG Network, and 98.7 ESPN New York.

“We are always looking for the best ways to serve sports fans and we are excited to bring even more New York flavor and content to local fans throughout their day on 98.7,” said Scott McCarthy, vice president, ESPN Audio. “Expanding DiPietro & Rothenberg in morning drive, being fortunate enough to have Bart & Hahn back as a local New York show, and continuing with all of our other outstanding local shows will create consistency for listeners and give our hosts a greater opportunity to engage with audiences, and each other, on the day’s top stories.”

The local changes do require some additional adjustments on ESPN Radio’s side as well. The national network will install Jason Fitz and Harry Douglas into the newly opened 12p-3p slot. The 7p-9p evening show will now belong to the team of Joe Fortenbaugh and Amber Wilson. They fill the void created by Sarah Spain who recently announced her departure.

Greeny — hosted by Mike Greenberg — will remain in its current 10a-12p timeslot on the station. However, the move to a local morning show on 98.7 ESPN New York does raise questions about KJM‘s future on ESPN Radio.

The Michael Kay Show, and the station’s other local programs hosted by Dan Graca, Larry Hardesty and Gordon Damer all remained unchanged.

Jon Marks: ‘Can’t Take Chris Simms Seriously’ After Jalen Hurts Criticism

1

The Philadelphia Eagles are off to a 10-1 start, and while there’s criticism from sports media members inside the city, 94WIP afternoon host Jon Marks doesn’t want to hear it from those who aren’t fans, especially Chris Simms.

During Chris Simms Unbuttoned, the former NFL quarterback turned NBC Sports analyst said “people are scared to talk about Jalen Hurts” and that the third-year quarterback doesn’t pass tests “with flying colors”.

“He had him ranked as the 35th best quarterback in the league,” Marks said. “Now I can’t take anything he says serious. Kellen Mond — is he even in the league? I think he got released by the Vikings. So, anyway, whatever with Chris Simms.”

Co-host Ike Reese had less criticism for Simms but did say he disagreed.

“There’s an awful lot of qualifying comments,” Reese said. “Or compliments, I guess.”

Return of Bob Iger Puts Pac-12 ‘Not Exactly In A Great Place’

0

The Pac-12 is currently in a media rights negotiation with partners for its next TV deal after the departure of USC and UCLA. The conference has remained committed to the stance that it feels it can match the dollar amount given to the Big 12 from FOX and ESPN. However, Andrew Marchand of The New York Post isn’t so confident.

During The Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast, Marchand said the recent return of Bob Iger as Disney CEO, coupled with recent layoffs from Amazon, could spell bad news for the PAC 12’s quest to match what the Big 12 received.

“Do I still think they can get the same number as the Big 12? I do, but you start thinking about where this is going and that’s not exactly a great place to be if you’re the Pac-12. They might get the number, but the idea that they’ll get a lot more than the Big 12 — which I’ve already said is not gonna happen — I think it’s even more evident it’s not gonna happen. These places aren’t gonna spend big money on the Pac-12…I think there’s some rough waters out in the Pacific.”

Marchand said if the University of California Board of Regents won’t allow UCLA to join the Big Ten as expected, the conference would then set its sights on Washington and Oregon, which would continue to decimate the Pac-12.

CNN Begins Mass Layoffs

0

CNN Media Reporter Oliver Darcy released an internal memo sent to company employees from CEO Chris Licht detailing mass layoffs at the cable network. The cuts are expected to begin tomorrow.

“It will be a difficult time for everyone,” Licht said in the memo. “If your job has been impacted, you will learn more through an in-person meeting or via Zoom, depending on your location. In those meetings, you will receive information specific to you about notice period or any severance that would apply, and your anticipated last day.”

He also added the cuts will effect “a limited number of individuals, largely some of our paid contributors”.

According to Axios, a few hundred people will be impacted as part of the company’s layoffs. CNN’s parent company, Warnes Bros. Discovery is seeking no reduce debt from its merger earlier this year, resulting in the network needing to eliminate salaries.

As more details become available, BNM will update this story

Sean Pendergast: Cleveland Media Has Done ‘Good Job Peppering’ Deshaun Watson With Hard Questions

0

Deshaun Watson is slated to play his first game for the Cleveland Browns this week after serving an 11-game suspension for serial sexual assault with more than two dozen massage therapists in the Houston area. Sports Radio 610 host Sean Pendergast gave credit to Cleveland media members for not allowing the former Texans quarterback to sidestep questions about his alleged misconduct.

“Deshaun will get asked about this today at his press conference,” Pendergast said after it was revealed that at least 10 of Watson’s accusers will be in the crowd in Houston Sunday. “Someone in Cleveland — cause Cleveland has done a good job peppering him with hard questions– will ask him ‘Tony Buzbee will be at the game with 10 of your accusers. What do you think about that?'”

Co-host Seth Payne added the first time Watson looks in the direction of where the accusers will be located, it will be photographed and filmed ad nauseam.

“Cameras will be trained on him the entire time, obviously,” Seth Payne said. “All he has to do is make one glance in that direction and someone will grab a still frame of that. Let’s say Deshaun can compartmentalize but also not stare at one section of the stadium.”

Beginning next week, Timeless will air Tuesday-Friday at 4:00 PM on YouTube and will also be available in podcast form.

I intend to reawaken this responsibility in my audience,” said Hartman. “I also hope to reignite the spark that there is so much more in life to consider than just the politics that we rehash all day.”

Dennis and Julie will join the Salem News Channel lineup beginning on Saturday, December 3rd. It will air both Saturdays and Sundays at 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM ET.
