Terry Bradshaw ‘Didn’t Want Pity’ After Cancer Diagnosis

In early October, Terry Bradshaw revealed he was cancer free. The news came as a shock, because few people knew Bradshaw had cancer in the first place. The Pro Football Hall of Famer and longtime FOX Sports NFL analyst wanted it that way.

“I didn’t talk about it because I didn’t want pity,” Bradshaw said in an interview with The Today Show. “I didn’t talk about it because a lot of celebrities — unfortunately, I’m one of those — when they say this, I think the perception around America with all the the millions of people is, ‘Aw, look at him. Bless his heart. He has cancer. Well, my husband died of cancer! My kids are…’ I didn’t want that.”

Bradshaw was diagnosed with bladder cancer in November of 2021, and then a merkel cell tumor was discovered on his neck in March of this year. He had the tumor removed and is now cancer free.

Jay Williams Wonders ‘Where’s the Criticism For Amazon?’

Much has been made about Kyrie Irving’s decision to tweet out a link to an anti-Semitic film, and his insinuation that he’s read the book the film is centered around. ESPN’s Jay Williams wonders why there isn’t any criticism for the film existing on Amazon Prime Video in the first place.

Williams appeared on First Take to discuss Kyrie Irving dodging the media after a second consecutive game. He had criticism for the Nets guard, but wondered aloud why there was a lack of anger at the world’s largest retailer.

“I watched the entire film,” Williams said. “There’s a lot of things in the film I disagree with. The curiosity nature of it is interesting. Where is that same attention and energy for the platform that is promoting it and profiting off of it? I don’t hear any of that talk around Jeff Bezos and Amazon. I don’t hear anybody talking about that. I hear everyone skewing their anger towards Kyrie for taking a picture of it and tweeting about it. Now, there deserves to be more context there from Kyrie. I think where Kyrie lost a lot of people was his unwillingness to go to the podium and expound upon the points that he learned from watching this. And actually coming out and saying ‘I don’t stand about calling Jewish people the devil. There’s a lot of misinformation, but this is my main point from watching this.’ But I go back to the bigger macro point.”

“It is irresponsible,” Molly Qerim interrupted. “It is irresponsible to amplify messages from Hitler. Ever. On any platform,” she ended while Williams said he agreed.

“So why is it on a major platform? Why is a major platform amplifying it? Kyrie amplified it to 14.7 million people, but the platform is profiting and promoting it to billions of people,” Williams argued. So the anti-Semitism — it is a thing. I have called a lot of my Jewish friends. We have talked about this. I get it. Kyrie Irving deserves a lot of heat. Then put towards something that deserves it, too. And that’s on the platform. I feel like that whole thing is being missed here.”

Pac-12 Believes Women’s Basketball Major Player In Next TV Deal

Women’s basketball is a major part of the next Pac-12 television deal.

That’s according to conference commissioner George Kliavkoff. During Pac-12 women’s basketball media day Tuesday, the head of the conference told The Mercury News women’s basketball is something television partners are seeking out.

“I think women’s basketball is our fastest-growing television sport,” Kliavkoff said. “Ratings are increasing faster than any other sport. And I think it’s one of the sports that has been undervalued traditionally, in media rights. I think that provides a great opportunity.”

Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer is appreciative of what the conference’s cable channel has provided for her teams and athletes.

“Pac-12 Networks has put Pac-12 women’s basketball on the map,” VanDerveer said. “We always were good, but now people know about it.”

She later added that the expansion of women’s basketball games on network television, like ABC, is a good thing for the game.

“We love playing on the Pac-12 Network and ESPN, but ABC will just get you into more homes. We want the young girls, boys, old men, women, whoever to see these great players and the great teams. It is absolutely thrilling.”

The Pac-12 reportedly believes they can eclipse the number of $380 million per year that the Big 12 received after it extended its current deal with FOX Sports and ESPN, with women’s basketball playing a role in exceeding that number.

George Brett Laments Lack of Baseball Coverage

During an appearance on Parkins & Spiegel on 670 The Score, Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett said he struggles to follow baseball nationally now with the lack of coverage in traditional media sources.

“I don’t really follow anything outside of Kansas City. It all started when, god, USA Today and the local paper, they don’t even put in box scores anymore,” Brett said. “You notice that? I used to love to get up in the morning, and there’s not many guys I follow in baseball on other teams, but now in order for me to do that, I’ve got to go to MLB.com, pull up box scores and I’ve got to start clicking all these frickin’ buttons.

Many newspaper deadlines are now too early to include a baseball box score in the final print edition.

“Just give me a frickin’ newspaper with all the information I need,” continued Brett. “It’s not that frickin’ hard, is it? Jesus Christ, it just drives me crazy. And they wonder why baseball is losing its popularity? I think that might be one of the reasons.”

Rebecca Lowe Doesn’t Like When The Host Is The Star

During the Premier League season, soccer or football fans can tune into Rebecca Lowe hosting the studio show to get them set for the weekend’s games. However, if Lowe hadn’t taken one opportunity a decade ago, she might not be where she is today.

Lowe was a guest on the Laughter Permitted with Julie Foudy podcast and said that a little over a decade ago, she thought she had reached the point where she wasn’t going to be seen as more than a sideline reporter. Then, she got an offer to be a part of ESPN’s coverage of the Women’s World Cup in Germany.

“I was at a point in my career where I was thinking I’m never really going to get to where I wanted to get to and I was having thoughts about I’m 10 years in, you know what, I think I’ve reached the point where no one is going to take me any more seriously than being a sideline reporter and I’m never going to be a host and I think I’m going to probably start thinking about another career.

“ESPN UK, who I was the sideline reporter for the Premier League for 4 years during that time said to me that ESPN USA would like you to go to Germany to do the Women’s World Cup. I’m thinking I don’t think I want to do that. I said to Paul [her husband], I don’t think I want to do that, what’s it going to lead to? It’s literally going to lead to nothing. I just don’t want to do it. He was like, you’re going. When my husband says you’re going, I’m going.” 

Well, Lowe took that chance and it ended up leading to being a part of ESPN’s EURO 2012 coverage the following year and one person took notice of her work, who is now her boss at NBC.

“That led to doing the EUROS the following summer in Bristol and weirdly, who was watching that? My now boss, Pierre Moossa… Pierre was watching EURO 2012 and the rest was history. The 2011 World Cup was a huge part of my journey.”

As the studio host, Lowe is not a fan of when the host is the start of the show because she wants to represent the fan at home.

“I don’t like shows where the host is the star. I just don’t think that’s what you are there for, whether that’s on radio or TV. What do I know? I’ve never played the game. Literally, my job is to represent the person at home watching….I don’t like it when it’s the other way around.”

While the Premier League studio show does have an order format, Lowe mentioned that there is no script and that the whole plan can go out the window depending upon what happens in the first game that day.

“We don’t have a script, we have a vague running order format. Then, we just react as we go depending upon what happens. There’s a rough plan, but very often the entire format from between Game 1 and 2 goes out the window and I just have to put a big line through it and start again.”

Baseball legend Ron Cey is launching a digital sports talk show with CRN Digital Talk Radio.

We’ll See About That with Ron Cey will air Saturdays at 2:00 PM ET on the digital network.

Kyrie Irving’s recent conduct continues to strike a chord with sports radio personalities. WFAN morning host Gregg Giannotti ranted about the NBA’s lack of discipline in regards to Irving, the reaction — or lack thereof — from the general public, and the conduct of franchises when it comes to non-playing personnel and their personal opinions.

“It’s obvious what you do. You do the right thing,” Giannotti said. “Screw the pressure from the players. You actually step up and have some intestinal fortitude to do the right thing. And he (Adam Silver) doesn’t. He just runs and hides. Here’s the problem: They get away with it! And nobody holds them accountable. It’s the same stuff with the China situation. The same thing! And that went away. You hold your feet to the fire and then they’re like ‘Oh, where’s Adam Silver with the China thing?’ ‘Where’s Lebron James with the China thing?’

“And then they say this terrible stuff, we slam them on the radio, there’s columns written about it, but then it goes away! And they get away with it! And the same thing is happening here,” he continued. “You’ve got a guy who promotes this grossly anti-Semitic film, who, by the way, did say he watched, and implied in that press conference that he read the book. I know we had a moron caller yesterday who was like ‘All he was trying to say was where do the Jews come from or where the Blacks come from.’ That’s not what this movie is about, I’m sorry.

“There is a quote in there — a fake Hitler quote in there,” said Giannotti. “There is also another fake quote in there talking about how the Holocaust didn’t happen so the Jews can control the world, that’s why they came up with the lie. I’m not making that up! That’s in there. There is a fake quote in that movie that says the Jewish people lied about the Holocaust to make people feel bad for them, so they can run the world,” the host said with an increasing volume. “That’s in that movie that Kyrie posted! But Kyrie’s out there dishing assists and shooting a basketball and we’re letting him go out there and play?!

“Nobody’s doing anything about it! What world are we living in?! Honestly! There was the Sacramento Kings play-by-play guy that tweeted out ‘All Lives Matter’ and was fired in 10 seconds! 10 seconds his ass was on the street! Kyrie Irving is posting about a video that says the Holocaust didn’t happen and he’s dodging the media, and playing in NBA games! And getting paid a gazillion dollars! Where are the rational people?! Where did you go?! Where are the people with guts?! Where are you?! Why are we afraid of this a-hole?! Why are we afraid of him?!”

“Ask Sean Marks,” Boomer Esiason responded.

“Why is he afraid?! Because he’s a gutless wuss, too! Because all he cares about is winning,” Giannotti said. “He pushed all his chips into the middle of the table, it’s a complete disaster for him, and he’s trying to save face. So he’s gonna take the sexual harassment coach away from the Celtics and then stand by this anti-Semite jerkoff! That’s what he’s gonna do. That’s his plan. Good job, Sean! Good job.”

Bernstein & Holmes: Proud of Nick Friedell’s Handling of Kyrie Irving Interaction

Much has been made of Kyrie Irving’s recent comments and promotion of an anti-Semitic movie on Amazon Prime Video, and his interaction with ESPN Reporter Nick Friedell about his promotion. 670 The Score hosts Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes had high praise for Friedell, and other media members, for their response.

“On a personal note, I’d just like to say I’m proud of my former intern at The Score Nick Friedell,” Holmes said. “I think that he did a wonderful job of trying to make sure the important questions get answered by someone who doesn’t want to have an actual discussion but will talk to you all day long about the importance of having those discussions. I also think it’s interesting hearing him talk about not wanting to re-traumatize the children of Sandy Hook, while not realizing he’s re-traumatizing people in the Jewish community.”

“While saying ‘I don’t have to understand anything from you’,” Bernstein added, before Holmes noted Irving doubled and tripled down on his comments by saying they were true. “About the Alex Jones post. ‘It’s true.’ And about these secret societies that Marcus Stroman was tweeting about yesterday, too. These are not proud times for Duke University, I can say that,” Bernstein, a Duke graduate, concluded.

The show then played comments made by Rich Eisen, who vehemently opposed what Irving said, and what he misunderstood.

“You’re dehumanizing me, Kyrie. I’m a Jewish man,” Eisen said. “Descendant of people who died in gas chambers and got incinerated by Nazis. You’re dehumanizing me by putting on your platform a book and movie that is filled with antisemitic tropes that are designed or eventually lead to the dehumanization of me, and my children, and my ancestors who died because they were Jewish.

“It’s not funny, it’s not hilarious, and I can’t believe I have to tell someone from Duke who is clearly smart enough to know — you’re not promoting it with a tour — but when you put it in front of four million people who might not have already heard about it or know about it, you’re promoting it. You’re giving it your platform.”

Bernstein, who is Jewish, noted he’s the descendent of a man who fled Poland to avoid Jewish persecution.

“If you don’t speak up against it at this stage — if this gets normalized, if this gets to be ok — you can hear the rumble of the trains. You can hear ’em,” an emotional Bernstein said.

Chicago Bears Local TV Rights Potentially On Move

After announcing its radio broadcasts would be moving to ESPN 1000, the Chicago Bears local television rights could hit the open market as well.

A report from Jeff Agrest of the Chicago Sun-Times claims the franchise’s deal with FOX 32 expires after the current season. Agrest mentions WGN and Marquee Sports Network as potential landing spots. Marquee Sports Network currently airs a weekly show centered on the franchise called Bear Essentials.

The Bears and the television station have partnered for the last 15 seasons to air the team’s preseason games, as well as weekly shows and pre and postgame shows.

The franchise isn’t afraid to leave longtime partners behind. The new deal with ESPN 1000 ends a relationship with WBBM that began in 2000.

Gavin Newsom Blames Jesse Watters for Political Violence

California Gov. Gavin Newsom blamed Fox News host Jesse Watters for contributing to the “dehumanization” of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. 

Last week, Pelosi’s husband was attacked with a hammer by an intruder who allegedly broke into his San Francisco residence. 

“I’ve seen the dehumanization of Nancy Pelosi,” Newsom told CBS News correspondent, Major Garrett, last week. “I don’t think anyone’s been dehumanized like she has consistently. Now I watched this one guy, Jesse Watters or something on Fox News.” 

On Monday, the “Jesse Watters Primetime Live” host responded to Newsom’s criticism. 

“Let’s set the record straight: Paul Pelosi got drunk and nearly killed someone with his car, and then the Napa County DA made it go away. We reported that Paul Pelosi got special treatment and mocked him for trying to bribe officers,” Watters explained.

“If anything, Gavin Newsom has done more to aid and abet this attack on Pelosi than anybody. David DePape is a homeless criminal and an illegal alien. DePape overstayed his visa for years — committed crimes,” added Watters.
