Chris Stigall Inks Extension With AM 990 The Answer

0

AM 990 The Answer morning host Chris Stigall has signed a multi-year extension with the Salem Media Group-owned station.

“I will be staying put with Philadelphia’s AM 990 The Answer, every morning in Philadelphia, for the next three years,” Stigall said on his podcast.

He continued by saying he is “so grateful, and blessed, and humbled to be able to continue to do this and call this my job and talk to you every day. It is never lost on my what a privilege it is that God has blessed me with the ability to do this for a job.”

Stigall also announced a one-year extension for his show on KCMO in Kansas City to continue.

“Since the day Chris began with Philadelphia’s AM 990 The Answer, he has engaged Philadelphians in intelligent and relevant conversation that has served to entertain and stimulate much thought in the minds of our audience,” Salem Philadelphia General Manager Lorenzo Caldara said. “He has secured such an attentive audience that can’t wait to listen and call in to him everyday Monday through Friday.”

Julian Edelman Considers Himself A Pioneer

0

Since his playing days with the New England Patriots ended after the 2020 season, Julian Edelman has kept himself busy with his role on Inside the NFL and now co-hosting the Games with Names podcast with comedian Sam Morril. So, what was Edelman looking for with his post-football endeavors?

Edelman was a guest on the most-recent episode of the Half-Forgotten History podcast with Trey Wingo and he said that the vibe that Inside The NFL has with Phil Simms, James Brown, Brandon Marshall, Michael Irvin, and Ray Lewis was something that he was looking for.

“With Inside the NFL, I have those guys and there’s a camaraderie. We get to have that breaking bread and just locker room kind of vibe. On the podcast, it’s the same thing.”

The MVP of Super Bowl XLIII mentioned that the key to doing the things he does now in his post-career came from the way him and his team were able to use social media to build his own brand and help ease the transition from a playing career to a member of the media.

“When I retired, I was fortunate enough to put a good team around me for all of my off-the-field things. We built a brand through social media. Kind of pioneers of this whole thing with social and e-commerce and millennial/Gen-Z things. It helped me land a role on Inside the NFL and go and have an ability to start a podcast, Games With Names. It’s been good and it honestly helps with the transition.”

Now that Edelman’s playing days are in the past, he said that he now has the opportunity to do things that he was always interested in since he was a kid, but did not have the time for and he is grateful for the opportunities that the NFL has allowed him to have.

“I’ve been a football player since I was 8 years old, but I did have other interests. Now that I am done, I get to explore that. I am so grateful for football and for the game just because it has given me the opportunity to do things that are fun and amazing.”

Stugotz: ‘Sean McDonough Hates The Aaron Judge Cut-Ins’

0

College football fans are not being shy with how they feel about Aaron Judge. Whether it is private conversations or social media posts, people are making their disdain for the cut-ins to college football games on ESPN networks when the Yankee slugger comes to bat known. On Monday morning, Stugotz added that it isn’t just fans that are unhappy.

The Dan Le Batard Show discussed the second straight week of cut-ins on Monday morning. Stugotz pointed out that one of ESPN’s primary college football voices sounds just as annoyed as fans are.

“Sean McDonough hates the toss to Aaron Judge,” he said. Hates it!”

Last week, ESPN and ABC cut into games when Judge was sitting on 60 home runs. This week, he was sitting on 61. A 62nd home run would be the most in American League history.

Stugotz added that has to be part of McDonough’s frustration.

“In his defense, what are we cutting in for? I have no idea if [Aaron Judge] is breaking a record, what record he’s breaking, if he’s clean. I have no idea!”

Producer Mike Ryan Ruiz said the fact that Judge is yet to deliver is making the cut-ins more frustrating for fans.

“I think what hurts the whole thing is that Aaron Judge has been terrible during these cut-ins,” Ruiz said. “He’s been God awful during these cut-ins. I haven’t seen a single home runs during one of these cut-ins. There was genuine fury at a watch party I was at. Fury! At Aaron Judge.”

A popular criticism of ESPN has been that this kind of attention would not be paid to Aaron Judge if he was chasing a mark that wasn’t the home run record if he played anywhere other than New York. According to Ryan, the mistake is bigger than that. Why would regular season baseball ever interrupt college football?

“If you look at the numbers, if you look at the interest, if you look at the revenue that it generates for the networks, it makes more sense to have an Aaron Judge at-bat interrupted by an Iowa State field goal attempt than it does the other way around.”

There are four games left in Major League Baseball’s regular season. You can bet college football fans will make plenty of signs for College GameDay if Judge cannot hit number 62 before the playoffs start.

Nick Kayal: Joy Reid ‘Queen of Picking Low-Hanging Fruit’

0

During the debut of Kayal and Company on 1210 WPHT in Philadelphia Monday morning, new host Nick Kayal blasted MSNBC host Joy Reid for her weekend comments comparing Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) to prominent segregationists of the 1960s.

During a press conference, DeSantis told reporters Florida residents shouldn’t even think about looting the vacant homes of those evacuated during Hurricane Ian. Reid took to Twitter to point out the racial history of the “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” mindset.

“Don’t be a jerk, don’t go into someone else’s house and ransack their property, and loot and steal. Of course, that’s the opening of the door — the green light — for MSNBC to cry racism and that’s exactly what Joy Reid did. The MSNBC host said Ron DeSantis’ warning to looters in Ian’s aftermath is like a racist threat from segregationist era. Joy Reid is on her show and they’re discussing all the pertinent issues we’re fascinated by. Global warming, climate change, and then of course Hurricane Ian. And then, of course, they’ve got to play the clip of Ron DeSantis and she goes to Twitter — Joy Reid’s personal Twitter page — to bash DeSantis for warning potential criminals against looting the evacuated homes of Hurricane Ian survivors in Florida.”

Kayal then read a portion of a news story describing Reid’s actions in response to the comments made by DeSantis.

“Obviously, Ron DeSantis, clearly a racist,” Kayal said sarcastically. “Clearly going back to the ’60s. Of course, it’s low-hanging fruit. And Joy Reid — the queen of picking low-hanging fruit — immediately goes to her played out, tired card.”

More Than 11 Million Watched Queen Elizabeth Funeral Coverage

0

The state funeral for Queen Elizabeth II was the top news story for the week ending Sep. 25. Like her coronation back in 1952, the event for Britain’s highest-ranking monarch was it’s first in the modern era since the dawn of television.

According to Nielsen Media Research, 11.4 million Americans tuned in on the morning of Sep. 19 across the thirteen outlets televising the funeral. That figure is slightly above the combined audiences for the main morning news programs on broadcast and cable.

For the 6:00 AM to noon Eastern period, Fox News was, by far, tops on cable with 1.97 million total viewers including 298,000 within the key 25-54 demographic. CNN’s morning ratings received a hefty boost from its normal levels, averaging 1.52 million viewers and a mere 4,000 shy of FNC’s 25-54 demo. MSNBC (991,000 total, 106,000 adults 25-54 from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.) also drew above-average numbers in the morning.

At the peak of coverage, within the 11:00 AM-Noon ET hour (4-5 p.m. in London) for the funeral service, it was CNN on top within the key 25-54 demo (404,000; +51,000 from FNC) but FNC led in overall viewership (2.4 million; +326,000 from CNN). MSNBC trailed with 1.1 million viewers and 115,000 adults 25-54.

On the broadcast networks, NBC edged out ABC by 3 percent — each of them drew around 3 million total viewers in that 11 a.m. hour. (Note: these figures mimic what they normally do for Today and Good Morning America per day).

Newsmax drew 192,000 viewers and NewsNation posted 32,000 — again, on-par with their respective morning ratings.

Of course, these amounts pale in comparison to the TV audiences in the Queen’s homeland of the United Kingdom. According to its data service BARB (Broadcasters Audience Research Board), an average of at least 27 million people had watched, of which the vast majority (approximately 70 percent) tuned in to BBC1’s coverage. At its peak, it generated a 95 share, meaning 95 percent of all televisions turned on within the UK territories had the funeral on their screens.

Howard and Jeremy: Amazon Prime Video Is Best NFL Broadcast

0

Amazon Prime Video and Thursday Night Football received backlash last week for failing to mention a previously perceived concussion by Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after the third-year signal caller suffered a scary-looking concussion in the first half of a game against the Bengals. WGR morning hosts Howard Simon and Jeremy White discussed the Amazon crew, with White saying he believes it’s the best NFL broadcast on Howard and Jeremy.

“I will say, the Amazon crew is getting criticized for not mentioning the Bills game during halftime. So, that aside, for me it’s the best crew,” White said. “Everything about Amazon’s broadcast is the best one. You and I talked about it last week. It is the recently retired players. It is so much better.

“When they were talking on the pregame — just football points, not Tua points — Richard Sherman they ask him like ‘You’ll be mad if what?’ and he said ‘I’ll be mad — and I’m gonna be talking to you at halftime about it — if the Dolphins, after playing 90 snaps on defense against the Bills, put their corners out on islands and don’t give them safety help. They’re gonna get beat, and I’ll be here to tell you it was a mistake that they’re not helping out their corners’. And sure enough, what happened? They did it and they got burned. He would have come back and talked about it at halftime if the Tua thing didn’t happen.”

He continued by pointing out several of the studio analysts as performing well early in their broadcasting careers.

“Fitz (Ryan Fitzpatrick) is good. Andrew Whitworth is good. It’s top to bottom — maybe Tony Gonzalez is the weak link, I mean, he’s fine — but top to bottom it’s a great broadcast.”

The pair also discussed the NextGen Stats alternate broadcast Amazon Prime Video produces as a viable way for those interested in learning more about deeper analytics and statistics of football to consume.

Mehdi Hasan: ‘Liberal Media’ Downplayed New Italian Prime Minister’s ‘Ties to Fascism’

0

MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan took aim at the “quote unquote liberal media” for its lack of criticism of new Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her ties to fascism.

The Mehdi Hasan Show host began Sunday’s show by defending a recent tweet discussing Meloni’s victory in Italy’s election, and the problematic nature of some of her comments.

He mentioned he expected Republicans to embrace the new Italian Prime Minister, saying they are “at best, to quote the President, semi-fascist themselves”.

Hasan continued by saying “what has been so depressing, is just how much of the quote unquote liberal media — the mainstream media — are giving her a pass or playing down her and her party’s fascist roots, focusing more on the fact that she is female, and less on the fact that she is a fascist. That has been deeply, deeply depressing to see.”

He concluded by equating headlines from The Washington Post and The New York Times, among others, to those surrounding the 2020 election that said Donald Trump wouldn’t participate in a coup attempt.

“Look, I have a humble suggestion for many of my colleagues in the quote unquote liberal media,” Hasan said while he ended his monologue. “How about in the year 2022 we stop playing down, minimizing, whitewashing people who literally say or do fascist things? People who want to overturn elections and ban Muslims. People who, as in the case of Italy’s next Prime Minister, spout great replacement theory, while running a political party that has a direct connection back to Benito Mussolini himself? Can we try doing that? Please?”

Terry Bradshaw Is Cancer Free

0

During FOX NFL Sunday, Terry Bradshaw revealed he was diagnosed with two different forms of cancer in the last year.

However, after surgeries and treatments, Bradshaw said he is now cancer free.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer said he was diagnosed with bladder cancer in November of last year and surgery and treatments removed the cancer. Then, in March of this year, a tumor was found on the left-side of his neck. Bradshaw called it a “Merkel cell tumor”, which he had removed.

Bradshaw’s candor comes after struggling through a sentence during the September 25th edition of the show, in which Howie Long helped finish his sentence.

The 74-year-old has worked on FOX NFL Sunday since its inception in 1994. He will be inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame later this year.

Scott Van Pelt’s ‘Bad Beats’ Becoming 30-Minute Monthly Show

0

The popular “Bad Beats” segment from SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt is being turned into a monthly half-hour show on ESPN.

Van Pelt, alongside “Stanford Steve” Coughlin, recaps the toughest losses suffered by sports gamblers with unconventional final moments and unexpected outcomes as it pertains to the over/under or point spread, otherwise known as a “bad beat”. Generally, the segment lasts around 5-10 minutes. ESPN will repurpose the content from the show to package it into a half-hour edition.

The new monthly show debuted yesterday at 5:30 PM ET on ESPN.
