What Can Sellers Learn From Tiger Woods?

0

Tiger Woods will complete the latest chapter in his comeback story at The Masters. Are you a Tiger Woods in the sales pit?

I have written plenty of articles introducing ideas to newer salespeople. This column is for the more experienced salespeople in the building. The ones who have done it the longest and best. Just like the WFAN’s Danny C’– the best in the business. The longer you have sold sports radio, the more times you have failed rather than get the sale.

Tiger may have 82 PGA Tour wins, but he has many more losses. He has played approximately 375 PGA tournaments and lost 78% of the time. He is 82-293. He swings and misses plenty. He has shamed himself publicly like no other professional athlete of our time. He comes back from controversy, surgeries, accidents, drug dependency, coach/caddie changes, and swing modifications. His list of comebacks is impressive.

So, if the GOAT can keep swinging and missing, putting himself out there and showing up, can’t you? Here are some great lessons from Tiger:

#1 Commit to a Goal

Tiger wants to end his career with at least 19 Magor Championships. That’s it. He won’t let anything get in the way – and he has redefined anything.

What is your long-range goal? How much advertising do you want to sell before you consider moving on? Let’s say you make an average of 18% off every sale. How many millions do you need to sell to have enough money to retire? If you sold 10 million dollars in ads in the next seven years, how much of the $1.8 million you earn could you keep and invest and live off the earnings? Figure it out!

Make a plan and stick to it. Make it realistic to your age and market. But do it. The burning desire to hit your goal will carry you through the tough times, and the dollar amount earned will focus on your proposals and your time spent achieving them.

#2 Practice Persistence

How much do you practice and improve your selling skills? When Tiger had injuries and swing changes, he spent countless hours on the practice range honing them.

Can you spend time before 8 am, after 5 pm, or on weekends improving your selling skills? Can you explain your digital package without the digital sales manager to a client? Can you sell against Google and Facebook or with them? Do you have a new approach for car dealers? Are you servicing your agency clients the same way you have for 20 years? Have you been as persistent with new business as possible to get you to your goals?

Stick and stay; it’s bound to pay.

 #3 Believe

Learn how to believe in yourself and your business solutions. Learn how your thoughts create your feelings, and your feelings drive your behaviors. Think about being successful, feel the success coming on, and help others achieve that with your station. Sell the things you know to work for clients—a lot. It would be best if you believed in what you are selling and the person doing it. You!

Opening Day Provides a Break From The Heavy, Serious Topics on News Talk

0

Don’t try to convince me you don’t need a break. You do. I do. We all do.

And by a break, I don’t mean a vacation. I mean the occasional break from what we do every day for a living in News Talk. Don’t get me wrong. We love it. We love talking about the most important issues happening locally, nationally, and around the world that impact our lives every single day.

But, the topics can be heavy and serious, and even when we try to lighten them up to the best of our abilities, they are what they are.

So when there is an obvious opportunity to take that break, why not take it?

Last week, I wrote about how the Will Smith-Chris Rock slap was a welcomed topic for all of talk radio. It was different. But it was also a nationally trending topic that wasn’t unique to a market.

But this week, there was another opportunity for that break: Opening Day.

Now before you think, wait, sports? Think again.

Opening Day for the Major League Baseball season is never simply a sports story. If you think it is, you miss what Opening Day is all about. It’s the unofficial start of spring. It’s nostalgia. It’s hope. It’s optimism.

Opening Day of the MLB season makes everyone feel like a kid again. It has the ability to do that in a way no other “first day” of a sports season can accomplish.

As the program director and morning host at KCMO Talk Radio in Kansas City, I made the call to host our show from Kauffman Stadium on Opening Day this week.

First off, it wasn’t your normal Opening Day. It was the first “normal” Opening Day since 2019. The 2020 season was a wash due to COVID-19, and even last season began with a limited capacity crowd. It had been three years since any Kansas Citian could walk up and attend Opening Day at The K. That angle alone brings in a news angle that is worthy of our attention.

Then, the uniqueness of our situation in Kansas City is there have been many discussions and rumors surrounding the Royals wanting to move to a downtown baseball stadium. That’s even more of a news and politics story than a sports story.

And when the team owner promises you a sit-down interview from the stadium, jumping on that is a no-brainer.

Naturally, we get some P1 complaints that we aren’t talking about how much of a disaster Joe Biden is today. However, I have some not-so-breaking news: Joe Biden was a disaster yesterday. And he will still be a disaster tomorrow.

I know News Talk is scared to death of pushing away a P1, but the vocal minority are never as loud as they want to appear. Plus, my intentions were not to break down the roster or analyze the line up.

But when you have a chance to broaden your tent of listeners around the biggest thing happening in your market that day, show topical variety that’s incredibly local and timely in nature, while creating unique content that other sports and news stations in town won’t have access to, you do it.

That’s a programming principle that applies in its own way to each format. Don’t be scared off by the tunnel vision of what we’ve become accustomed to defining what “News Talk” is supposed to be.

Gloria Borger: Some Republicans Didn’t Show Ketanji Brown Jackson Respect

0

CNN Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger assessed the historical appointment of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court Thursday, noting that many Republicans couldn’t wait to leave the floor following the Senate’s 53-47 vote.

Jackson became America’s first Black woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Borger called out Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who was reportedly late for the proceedings.

“I think it was rude that Rand Paul was late, maybe he had a late flight, so we’ll give him that excuse,” said Borger. “Lindsey Graham wasn’t wearing the right tie, so he had to vote from outside the chamber.”

Borger said the process to appoint a Justice has been heavily politicized over the past 16 years. “Looking back to 2005, Justice Roberts, who no one would consider a liberal by any means, got 22 Democrats to vote for him.”

Borger argued that some Republicans didn’t show Judge Jackson the respect that she was owed.

“Let me point out that she (Jackson) is very popular,” said Borger. “This is not somebody with a twenty percent rating. People saw how graceful she was under pressure, and they decided they liked her.”

“I think the public was against those people who decided they couldn’t stay in that chamber,” she added. “This may boomerang for them. But at the very least, even if you disagree with the result, you can honor her achievement, and they couldn’t stay to do that.”

Fox Nation, Kelsey Grammer Team Up for a New Show

0

Streaming service Fox Nation is rolling out a new series hosted by Emmy award-winning actor Kelsey Grammer. The new program called “Kelsey Grammer’s Historic Battles for America” will debut on May 1.

“Kelsey’s affinity for our nation’s history and charismatic delivery will provide Fox Nation subscribers with an entertaining yet educational viewing experience they can’t get anywhere else,” said Fox Nation president Jason Klarman in a statement obtained by Barrett News Media.

During the series, Grammer will analyze historical conflicts and how certain strategies that were used during those wars had ripple effects throughout history. Some of those battles include the American Revolution, the Texas Revolution, the Civil War, and the American Indian Wars.

“I am excited this show will provide the opportunity to share a historical look into some of the most important battles fought through American history, to remember those who fought them, and how they shaped our country,” said Grammer.

The eight-part series begins with three episodes on battles during the American Revolutionary War, including the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Battle of Brooklyn, and the Battle of Yorktown.

“Kelsey is a legend in the entertainment industry, and we are proud to bring his talents to our platform,” added Klarman.

Dr. Anthony Fauci: Very Painful to Share a Podium with Donald Trump

0

Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN’s Chris Wallace that former President Donald Trump’s staff “declared war” on him during a tumultuous period at the height of the pandemic when information was changing by the second.

Fauci appeared on Wallace’s show which is streamed on CNN +. The transcripts were obtained by The Hill. The embattled doctor has come under tremendous criticism in recent months by Republican lawmakers who are demanding answers to some of Fauci’s suggested pandemic mandates.

“My position in the White House became extremely uncomfortable and, in fact, untenable, because I kept on telling the truth,” Fauci said.

In December, Wallace left his longtime position at Fox News to host a show on startup CNN+. Several months later, he criticized the culture at the network calling it “unsustainable.”

You can trace Fauci’s disdain for the Republican party directly back to Trump. Fauci served under several Republican presidents including Ronald Regan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.

“How tough was that, dealing with and sharing a podium with a president who … was dispensing misinformation?” Wallace asked Fauci.

“Yes, it was very painful,” Fauci answered. “And that’s the reason why I had to do something that I know alienated a lot of the Trump people, in fact, maybe all of the Trump people.”

As Long As The Check Clears, MLB Doesn’t Care If Fans See The Games

0

Another baseball season is upon us. Some thought it would never get here. While baseball claims to have fixed many of its problems, there is still one area where the sport lags behind the others. Baseball still can’t find a way to service its passionate fans when it comes to streaming games.

For many years, it was the blackout of ‘local’ games on the MLB.tv platform. So, if the Phillies are playing the Mets, and you’re a Phillies fan in New York, you won’t be able to watch it on MLB.TV, because it’s on SNY. It means if you’re a ‘cord cutter’ in Chicago, there’s no way for you to watch the Cubs or the White Sox when you’re at home.  As if this isn’t bad enough for fans, now, through a new exclusive deal with Apple TV Plus, it will be more of a total blackout for local audiences.

Apple agreed to pay Major League Baseball 85-million dollars a year, over the next seven seasons. In return, Apple gets a Friday Night doubleheader that airs exclusively on the company’s streaming service.

Exclusively, meaning, no local RSN or local broadcast. None.

Now, let’s review who or whom this is good for. MLB and Apple. Try to explain this scenario to a baseball fan, like let’s say a Mets’ fan. Max Scherzer was scheduled to make his Big Apple debut on Apple and not SNY. Good luck in selling that to a fan that has no idea what Apple TV Plus is and just gets frustrated and listens to the game on radio. For someone who did play-by-play for a number of years on radio, bring that on!

Because, if the fans are interested in taking the chance and dipping into the technology-based world it’s going to cost them. In addition to what they are already paying for cable and the associated fees for their local RSN, they’ll need to buy a subscription for the service, that’s priced at just over 100 dollars for the year.

“We have a next generation of fans that may be ‘cord-nevers,’ and you’ve got people that are no longer inside the bundle,” says Noah Garden, MLB’s chief revenue officer, in an interview with Variety, referring to the cable and satellite operators who have for years delivered many live sports broadcasts. “The most important thing for us right now is reach.”

Major League Baseball will produce the games airing on Apple TV Plus, along with pregame and postgame shows. There is supposed to be other baseball-related programming as well. MLB Big Inning will be a live show featuring highlights and will be available every weeknight during the regular season. Apple TV Plus will also feature game replays, highlights, and classic games. There will be on-demand programming too.

But will there be a demand for it? I’m skeptical. So is Chris “Mad Dog” Russo.

The host of ‘Mad Dog Unleashed’, went off on MLB’s decision to use this type of model in trying to grow its product. He’s one of many angry fans that may miss something from their team due to the stream, like the originally scheduled Scherzer start.

“I guarantee you right now if you put on local radio station WFAN, that’s their whole show,” said Russo last week on his SiriusXM show, Mad Dog Unleashed.

“Their whole show today is listening to the angry old man call up the radio station, ‘get off my lawn,’ all ticked off that he can’t see Scherzer’s first start because God help him, he doesn’t know how to figure out Apple TV. And he isn’t the only one.

“That’s baseball fooling around. I tell you, that’s dangerous,” Russo added. “We’re going to work our rear ends off to find the football games on Thursday night. We’re gonna work hard for those games. We’ll find ’em. It’s NFL football. We bet ’em. Plus, the local game in your market’s gonna be on over-the-air channels anyway. The Mets game is not over-the-air.”

He isn’t wrong. NFL games are once a week and usually presented as an event. Fans will work harder to find a game that’s say 1/17th of a schedule as opposed to 1/162nd of a season slate, especially if they have money on it. The fact is that many of the fans of baseball are of an older generation. That’s not to say someone in their mid 50’s, can’t figure out technology, because, plenty can. Other’s though, can’t.

“I am not gadget-oriented,” the 62-year-old Russo admitted. “I am not gadget-savvy and this is all about gadgets. And I’m gonna be sitting there one night at 9 o’clock and something’s gonna happen to my Amazon Prime watching Judge hit against Tampa in a big spot and the TV’s gonna go out. I guarantee it! And I’m gonna raise hell. But I’m gonna be barking at the moon! At the moon.

“The teams and the sport don’t care! They got 85-million from Apple and they got 30-million from Peacock and try to watch the games on Peacock down the road because THAT I KNOW you’re gonna have to pay for!”

These new deals probably will not attract a ton of new people to the game. In the case of Apple, likely the price will drive some away and the sheer panic of technology will scare others away.

It’s not just Apple TV Plus by the way. The Yankees have gotten into bed with Amazon and the league has a strange deal with NBC’s Peacock service. This package will air Sunday games with start times as early as 11:30 AM Eastern. That is crazy talk.

Imagine those teams that play a Saturday night game that either goes into extra innings or has rain delays. Maybe they are finished at 10 or 10:30 pm, then the teams have to be at the park to start at 11:30 AM the next day? Of course, it’s money-driven, like most decisions are these days. Forget about those that have to actually play the game, or broadcast it, as long as the check clears, who cares right?

To me, it’s just another case of baseball stepping on its own foot and not really understanding the marketplace. An older fan base will not go through the trouble of adding all of these streaming services to keep up with their team. It’s the fact that you have to work for it, then pay for it, on TOP of what you’re already spending.

Attendance and interest are waning in the sport as it is already, so why make it more difficult on fans?

A Handy Guide To Sports Betting

You may or may not have noticed that the US has started to see the iGaming industry boom in an exponential way that many may have found rather difficult to predict.

Indeed, until rather recently and currently, for many in some states, sports betting was and is still an illegal activity. However, there has since been a rather big change that has swept over much of the US as the 2018 Supreme Court ruling had meant that the federal law surrounding activity was no longer in place and states had the option and power to regulate it if they had wanted to.

Naturally, a number of states have since decided to introduce regulations that permit sports betting to take place online within its borders, with the likes of New York, Michigan, and Louisiana being just some to have made moves in 2022, joining the likes of Nevada, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania amongst many others who did so since 2018.

Handy guide

For those where sports betting might be a new thing or something that has not been experienced in great detail before, we know that it can be a rather intimidating challenge at times to try and get to grips with, It can also be a daunting prospect for first-time and new players.

Nonetheless, we have created this handy guide that will provide all of the very basics needed in order to have a positive experience.

Types of bet types

There are a host of different bet types that are available, with each of them rather easy to understand and follow once a little detail is known about them. Moneyline is one of the most popular as this is betting on the overall winner of the event, whereas betting on the points spread is essentially picking a team to have a points swing in their favor.

Over/Under are popular bet types for many, as are futures (predicting the future outcome of a competition), whilst same game parlays are one of the hottest new bet types. Read more here to learn all about this popular bet type and why they come highly recommended by many sports betting enthusiasts.

Odds

It is important to have an understanding of the odds available to wager on, as these will give you a good indicator of what is likely to happen. These odds have been created by sportsbooks using statistical data and algorithms that work on probability, therefore suggesting the most likely outcome. Just click on the odds that you like, place your stake and make the bet!

Markets Available

There are plenty of different markets that are available when betting on certain sports, as it is now possible to bet on almost any possible outcome that can occur. It is important to understand each one, although most are rather self-explanatory.

Chris Tannehill Promoted To Senior Audio Producer At 670 The Score

1

Congratulations are in order for Chris Tannehill. He has received a promotion at 670 The Score. He will now serve as the station’s Senior Audio Producer.

Tannehill has been at The Score for 15 years. He currently is the audio producer for Parkins & Spiegel in afternoon drive. He will retain those duties and also add the responsibility of creating audio opens and elements for other shows on the station.

“Tanny has been at the station for 15 years and is truly one of the best people to work on a daily basis, besides being one of the best in the business at what he does,” 670 The Score brand manager Mitch Rosen said in an email obtained by BSM. “From a creative standpoint he is an artist, a creative genius, and tells stories through audio on a daily basis.”

Rosen isn’t the only one that has sung the praises of Chris Tannehill in the past. In a feature written by Kate Constable last year, Danny Parkins said “This guy could work for Howard Stern, he could work for Dan Patrick. I’ve literally never heard a better audio producer in radio.”

Alex Rodriguez: ‘I Don’t Blame Michael Kay For Criticizing Me In The Past’

With the success of the ManningCast on ESPN during the 2021 NFL season, the network is introducing a new, special viewing presentation called Kay-Rod Cast featuring New York Yankees’ play-by-play announcer Michael Kay and three-time league MVP Álex Rodríguez. The duo will call eight games together, initially from ESPN’s Seaport District Studios in New York, NY during the 2022 regular season, starting with the Yankees’ matchup against the Boston Red Sox this Sunday, April 10 at 7 p.m. EST.

With the new style of broadcast, which they both describe as a “party on ESPN2,” ratings are not so much the focus. Instead, it will be about generating content and genuinely establishing a feel as if they are, according to Kay, “in the stands talking about the game with some friends who sat down next to us.”

“I think ratings – and ESPN is not going to want to hear this – they are overrated,” said Rodríguez. “I think this cast is really set for great content and really to entertain… and [to] show off my experience and my knowledge; my highs and lows, and what I’ve learned over my career.”

Even if the trend of secondary broadcasts and alternate-viewing presentations being subservient in the ratings to the traditional style of broadcast holds true, Kay reiterated a point of saliency that some may choose to overlook.

“The numbers will be where they are, but all the numbers are for ESPN,” said Kay. “We’re not going to look at it and be upset if the main broadcast has more viewership than we have.”

Rodríguez is excited to get the opportunity to work with his longtime friend Michael Kay, who covered him with both the YES Network and 98.7 ESPN New York throughout his 13 seasons with the Yankees. While Rodríguez received criticism from Kay after he was accused of using performance-enhancing drugs, and subsequently suspended for the remaining portion of the 2013 season and entirety of the 2014 season, he knows that relationships are not always linear, and he values Kay’s friendship.

“Michael and I have been great friends for over two-and-a-half decades, but I don’t blame Michael [for being critical] – I blame me,” said Rodríguez. “I was the jackass who got in trouble. Michael was doing his job, and that’s why he’s good at his job. That’s what I think will make this show really good because you’ll get forthrightness from him and I.”

A central goal of the Kay-Rod Cast will be remaining focused and topical pertaining to the game on the field. Kay, as he recently discussed with Barrett Sports Media, will be trying to fuse his role as a play-by-play announcer and radio host, while Rodríguez will seek to manifest part of his knowledge and personality never seen before.

“I don’t think I’ve ever met anybody who knows more baseball than Álex,” Kay said Wednesday. “To give people the opportunity to peel back the layers – this format gives us the perfect opportunity to do that. I think people are going to be shocked at the things they hear from him because he knows the game so well, and this is the perfect venue for it.”

The key to bringing this idea to reality was not only listening to Rodríguez’s prior appearance joining Michael Kay in the YES Network booth where they spoke about why he was hit by so many pitches, but also his outside sports and business commitments, including as a part-owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Rodríguez wanted to ensure that he would be able to bring his best in the booth before signing a multi-year contract extension with ESPN, but knew he would have to balance it with his busy schedule.

“I told Jimmy Pitaro [that] I don’t think I have the bandwidth to do another thirty games,” said Rodríguez, “and the opportunity to work with Michael was one I couldn’t pass down and I think we’ll have a lot of fun.”

The inaugural Kay-Rod Cast begins this Sunday night as the New York Yankees face the Boston Red Sox from Yankee Stadium at 7 p.m. EST in The Bronx, N.Y. The duo will call seven additional games on ESPN2 throughout the 2022 season, which will be available to stream on the ESPN App, while the new Sunday Night Baseball booth of Karl Ravech, Eduardo Perez and David Cone continue the traditional broadcast on ESPN. Additionally, Kay and Rodríguez will be the primary broadcast team for the first game of the second half of the 2022 regular season between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, along with an additional game that remains to be determined.
