‘The Jim Rome Show’ Teams Up With Westwood One, Moves to Afternoon Drive

0

Cumulus Media’s Westwood One and Jim Rome have announced a new exclusive partnership to syndicate and distribute The Jim Rome Show. Rome announced the plans during the opening of Monday’s program. Rome will move from his longtime slot of 12p-3p ET to 3p-6p ET as part of the changes. The shift goes into effect starting on January 6, 2025.

Rome told Barrett Media in an email, “Westwood One is a legacy brand and one of the industry leaders in creating, broadcasting and delivering sports content, while maintaining broadcast rights to some of the most coveted properties in all of sports. On top of that, Westwood One has been affiliating my program on radio stations for more than a decade, as well as creating relationships with advertisers and brands in the sale of our commercial time. “Additionally, I consider Collin Jones, Bruce Gilbert and Brandon Berman among the elite performers in our space and am thrilled to be able to continue to partner with them for the years ahead.”

“Jim Rome is a natural addition to Westwood One’s powerful portfolio of sports programming. His unique voice, unparalleled sports insight, and dynamic style have cultivated a dedicated audience that we look forward to welcoming,” said Collin Jones, President, Westwood One in a release. “Additionally, this partnership marks an exciting chapter for Westwood One, as we continue to deliver top-tier content for our audiences and our advertising partners.”

Rome, 60, has been one of the top voices and personalities in the sports talk business for more than three decades and is showing no signs of slowing down. This year, Rome moved his show to X with a live three-hour simulcast. He also launched his FAST Channel, which is now available across seven major platforms, including Amazon Freevee (also accessible through Prime Video and Fire TV), DIRECTV, LG Channels, Plex, Samsung TV Plus, Sling Freestream, and VIZIO WatchFree+.

“I firmly believe that no one understands and supports the vision that I have for taking the show and this brand into the next decade the way Westwood One does and that they are deeply committed to a shared vision,” Rome said. “We all love the business, have tremendous gratitude to be in it, and we’re all here to grind, deliver and win.”

Regarding the timeslot change, Rome added, “It’s pretty hard to fathom that I have been in the same time slot for the last 30 years! I’m extremely proud of my radio roots and what I have accomplished in my career, but the one thing that I’ve never done, but always wanted to do, is host a show in Drive Time. And now I have that opportunity.

“Program Directors are getting a known brand and commodity and a host who is not looking to slow down but double down. This chip on my shoulder is bigger now than ever before. I have never been more motivated to prove that my best work is actually in front of me and not behind me. It’s a mission. A lifestyle. A legacy. And I do still have something to prove to everyone who believes in me, and I am hungry to take on and attack this challenge. Any program director who carries this show is getting an extremely motivated host who is looking to win in this space and create kickass content every single day. Just give me the opportunity.”

Kay Adams: ‘Who Isn’t Working Netflix Christmas?’

0

Netflix and the NFL are embarking on the first season of a three-year deal in which games will be presented on Christmas Day exclusively on the streaming platform. The doubleheader, which features the Kansas City Chiefs facing the Pittsburgh Steelers at 1 p.m. EST followed by the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans at 4:30 p.m. EST, will be accessible to more than 200 countries and its 282 million global subscribers. As the NFL continues to broaden its reach, it will venture on this foray with a familiar group of 22 broadcasters from six networks situated across the country.

Kay Adams, the host of Up & Adams on FanDuel TV, will be performing the role on the studio show, where she will be joined by a cadre of analysts including Mina Kimes, Robert Griffin III, Drew Brees and Manti Te’o. The group will be broadcasting from Los Angeles, Calif. throughout the day, providing insights, analysis and expertise surrounding the games. Kimes and Griffin III were guests on Adams’ weekday program Monday morning where the group discussed the upcoming project.

“Who isn’t working Netflix Christmas?,” Adams said. “So excited to have this big, big family. So I thought we could take a look at the 22 people – it’s a 22-person roster – we’re going to have a snowball fight speed draft. You guys are the team captains. Who would you want on your team for a Christmas Day snowball fight?”

The impromptu draft took place during the show’s commercial break, which viewers can see live on YouTube, and featured several former players being selected. Once the show rejoined its linear program feed in progress, which includes the FanDuel Sports Network-branded group of RSNs owned by Diamond Sports Group and other entities, Kimes conveyed her excitement about the Christmas Day team on Netflix.

“I felt like when the lineup or whatever, that Coachella-style list of talent came out, people were not clear on like, ‘Who’s doing what?,’” Kimes said. “I mean, no one’s clear really, but you and I are actually, to clarify here, spending Christmas together because everyone else is spreading all over the country. Our studio show is in LA, and it is you, me, and then Robert, Manti and Drew.”

“Yes – Robert, Manti and Drew,” Adams replied, “and we’re going to have so, so much fun all day long in LA.”

Mason Burgin Joins OffBall as Vice President of Content Strategy

0

Mason Burgin has announced that he is joining OffBall as its vice president of content strategy, continuing his career in digital media. Burgin joins the company after spending nearly four years with Front Office Sports, most recently serving as its director of social media. Under his new role, he will be working with a team of professionals that includes Michaela Hammond, Shannon Kelley and Christian Stone among others. Burgin formally revealed the news on his LinkedIn page Monday morning and received plaudits from connections and colleagues in the business.

In an interview with Barrett Media earlier this year, Burgin discussed how Front Office Sports was able to successfully develop text-based material into content that resonates on social media. Part of that came in ensuring that the consumer ultimately received what they were anticipating, adopting a principle utilized on the MrBeast YouTube channel.

“When we build stuff, I want people to leave feeling like they got what they came for,” Burgin said. “Scroll through and learn about this thing for the first time. But also if I say, ‘Hey, link [in] bio,’ and they’re like, ‘Okay, I will go to your bio and click this post,’ they get to the story. I’m not overpromising on something. I’m actually giving them valuable information about something that they feel like they’ve been rewarded for following, engaging and reading.”

OffBall, which was launched by Michael Hammond, Adam Mendelsohn and Chris Stone earlier in the year, compiles the largest stories and trends on its homepage and newsletter. The company currently operates as a website, newsletter and social media feed that brings a human element towards content curation rather than solely relying on an algorithm. OffBall was employing six people at the time of its launch and is continuing its expansion. Within his post on LinkedIn, Burgin said that there are “some fun things coming” and hopes people will follow along.

ESPN Attains Largest Pre-January Women’s College Basketball Audience Since 2011

0

The Notre Dame Irish defeated the UConn Huskies last Thursday in a thrilling women’s college basketball matchup. Led by standout guard Hannah Hidalgo, the Irish improved to 8-2 on the regular season and did so in front of a record-setting audience. This early regular-season matchup averaged 847,000 viewers on ESPN, according to data from Nielsen Media Research, the most-watched women’s college basketball game of the season thus far. Moreover, the game averaged a 0.49 rating and peaked at 915,000 viewers, garnering the largest women’s college basketball audience on the ESPN networks before the month of January since 2011.

Earlier in the year, ESPN reached an agreement with the NCAA to extend its broadcast rights for 40 NCAA championships, including women’s basketball, volleyball and baseball. Networks owned by The Walt Disney Company will televise the NCAA Division I women’s college basketball tournament in March 2025, including the championship matchup on Sunday, April 6 on ABC.

This game will occur after the South Carolina-Iowa championship game last season averaged 18.9 million viewers, representing the most-watched basketball contest for ESPN since 2019. ESPN platforms set records during the Final Four, including the most-watched Final Four, national semifinals, Elite Eight, Sweet 16 and second-round games.

On Tuesday night, ESPN presented the Jimmy V Men’s Classic from Madison Square Garden featuring Miami-Tennessee and Michigan-Arkansas games. The broadcast averaged 791,000 viewers on ESPN, which is down 20% year-over-year from the 994,000 previously elicited. The Jimmy V Women’s Classic between NC State and Louisville aired on ABC this past Sunday at 1 p.m. EST. ESPN Events organizes these games every year, continuing a commitment to support the V Foundation for Cancer Research. ESPN has raised more than $326 million for the V Foundation since 1993, and the annual V Week has raised approximately $89 million over the last 17 years.

Randy Moss Receives Well Wishes, Support from ESPN ‘Sunday NFL Countdown’

0

Randy Moss, who stepped away from his role at ESPN to focus on a personal health challenge, revealed in an update on Friday that he is recovering after being diagnosed with cancer. The Pro Football Hall of Fame member and Sunday NFL Countdown analyst divulged the news during an Instagram Live video where he stated that he was back home after spending six days at a Charlotte-area hospital.

Moss was admitted after a six-hour surgery to treat cancer that was found “in the bile duct right between the pancreas and the liver.” Although he did not specify his timeline to return to broadcasts, Moss expressed that he hopes to be back with the crew “soon.” Moreover, he launched a campaign to raise awareness and proceeds towards cancer research.

To open the Week 15 edition of Sunday NFL Countdown, host Mike Greenberg informed viewers about the Instagram Live video. Within his discourse, he explained that Moss “described himself as a ‘cancer survivor” and conveyed what he had been through over the past few weeks. Greenberg added that the cast looks forward when he can make his return to the Sunday NFL Countdown desk.

“Absolutely, and [we are] Team Moss,” analyst Rex Ryan responded. “I got your purple tie and all that. Strong side, my friend, left side. I can’t wait to have you parked right here.”

Alex Smith and Teddy Bruschi echoed the sentiments, sending their well wishes to Moss as he is in recovery. Bruschi also shared that viewers can join Team Moss on his fight against cancer by visiting “RandyMoss.com.” All proceeds from merchandise sold through the website are directed to cancer research.

“Please do that,” senior NFL insider Adam Schefter added, “and please get back soon Randy because we cannot have Rex be the handsome man on the set.”

During a November edition of Sunday NFL Countdown, viewers noticed that Moss’ eyes appeared yellow on the set. In the following episode, he addressed the matter and articulated that there was an internal battle taking place. ESPN announced that Moss was stepping away from the network for an extended time earlier in the month. He has received support from his colleagues at the media company, along with NFL teammates and organizations.

The 14-year NFL veteran retired from the league in 2012, currently sitting fourth all time in receiving yards (15,292) and second all time in receiving touchdowns (156). Moss has been a member of the Sunday NFL Countdown studio show since joining ESPN in 2016.

Tom Brady Makes Surprise Appearance on ‘ALL IN Sports’ Podcast Amid New Fanatics Partnership

0

The ALL IN Sports podcast recently taped an episode live from the offices of Fanatics to interview chief executive officer Michael Rubin. Co-hosts Marco Piemonte and Anthony Damato have been working on the podcast since its launch in 2022, and the duo recently announced a new partnership with the sports betting brand.

Ahead of a new episode of the program on Tuesday, it was revealed that the interview with Rubin was interrupted by seven-time Super Bowl champion and FOX Sports NFL analyst Tom Brady. The impromptu occurrence cultivated a new angle of conversation, a topic of which was Brady discussing former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick signing a deal to coach the football team at the University of North Carolina. Furthermore, the episode of All In Sports featuring Rubin and Brady will be available on Tuesday, Dec. 17 across a variety of platforms.

“We all knew interviewing Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin at his office was going to be a lot of fun,” Piemonte said. “But it went to another level when the legendary Tom Brady stopped by to say hello to Michael Rubin and we just happened to be in the middle of our interview. Tom joined us for a few minutes to chat about Belichick and his broadcasting career.”

Piemonte and Damato will be working in partnership with Fanatics as the podcast continues to grow. Throughout the season, fans and celebrity friends help them travel to major sporting events where they create interactive content and convey their thoughts on how to build a sports betting bankroll. Featuring insightful conversations and entertainment value, the ALL IN Sports podcast enter the Fanatics portfolio as the company fosters partnerships with different programs and outlets.

“We created this podcast to help the sports betting community build their bankrolls, but we are expanding the podcast to feature interviews with business leaders like Michael Rubin and sports personalities as we did on the fly with Mr. Brady,” Damato said. “With Fanatics as a new sponsor, we can now go All In on more than just sports betting and have in-depth conversations with newsmakers in the world of sports and never mention sports betting.”

Earlier in the year, Fanatics partnered with The Pivot podcast featuring former NFL players Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor. The company also hosted its inaugural Fanatics Fest, a convocation of athletes and fans in New York City with panels, activations and exhibits. This three-day event will be making its return to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center next June.
