Dave Portnoy: I Fired Kirk Minihane for Four Minutes Two Days Ago

0

Dave Portnoy, the founder and owner of Barstool Sports, recently revealed that he fired podcaster Kirk Minihane for four minutes on Wednesday. On the latest episode of The Unnamed Show, Portnoy divulged that there was a video of someone asking how Brianna LaPaglia (“Brianna Chickenfry”) went from hating Taylor Swift to now being the biggest fan of her music. In response, Minihane called LaPaglia a fraud, adding that she is one of the biggest frauds on the planet. The video was cut and made its way across social media, which apparently resulted in LaPaglia reaching out to Portnoy.

LaPaglia asked what was going on with Minihane, communicating that she had never spoken to him in his life. Furthermore, she asked to come on the show to give her perspective, something that Portnoy advised her not to do. From there, Portnoy texted Minihane with several expletives, prompting him to call his boss while in the car with his daughter driving back from a college visit. Portnoy acknowledged on the show that it was the angriest he has been in a long time, and he prompted to curse Minihane out on the phone. As this was taking place, Minihane expressed that he had no idea what the issue was.

“You then hang up the phone on me, and I text you back and I say, ‘I’m going to say whatever I want,’” Minihane recollected, “which by the way, I’m going to say whatever I want, and you said, ‘You’re fired.’ And for about 10 minutes, I was driving in upstate New York thinking, ‘Well okay. We’ll see what I can do next.’”

Minihane, who joined Barstool Sports in 2020 after working at WEEI, wondered why he had been fired and thought about other things he was doing with his life. Minihane called Portnoy back and was much calmer. He then expressed to Minihane that he did not even know LaPaglia, reacting to the clip of him saying that she was a fraud.

“If you had gone public, had a press conference and said, ‘I’m firing Kirk Minihane because he called Brianna Chickenfry a fraud,’ you would have got f****ng barbecued and her life would have been way worse if that happened.”

Portnoy acknowledged that Minihane’s fanbase would have probably come after him if he decided to take this course of action. Ryan Whitney then asked why Portnoy was sensitive towards LaPaglia compared to other employees who have worked at the digital media brand. Before Portnoy explained what was taking place, Minihane articulated that he was doing nothing wrong.

“You guys aren’t in a world, and neither of you have dealt with it, where you’re getting the most hate. She gets the most hate you can get on the internet right now. I’m not saying rightly or wrongly.”

Minihane added that she has her own life and is more successful but personally does not care. In fact, his attitude upon discovering what transpired was adversarial to LaPaglia, and Minihane invited her to come on the show. Minihane does not like her and is not sure if he can say that because he may be fired.

“This is somebody who’s in a different world, and I’m telling you. I haven’t seen anybody get this type of hate in 20 years of me doing this. Bri just turned down $12 million, and she’s trying to build her career up, and then within a week and a half, she’s the most hated person, and somebody who was at the same company you’ve never met from the clouds is being like, ‘She’s the biggest fraud.’”

Former Radio Host Jeff Thurn Sentenced To 46 Months in Ticket Fraud

0

Former Sioux Falls, S.D., sports radio host Jeff Thurn received a 46-month prison sentence for running a fraudulent ticket scheme that brought him more than $5 million, according to local reports.

The sentence will be followed with three years of supervised release and Thurn was order to pay his victims back the money they lost.

Thurn left ESPN Sioux Falls, where he was host of the mid-day Overtime show in 2023 to take a national job with ESPN Radio. That job fell through when Thurn was indicted later that year.

According to court papers posted online, Thurn unlawfully enriched himself by “fraudulently inducing individuals to provide him money to be purportedly used to purchase sporting and other entertainment event ticket through BACKSTAGE [Thurn’s company], and then misappropriating those funds for the defendant’s personal use and benefit.”

Investors were promised a minimum 30% annualized guaranteed return on the money they gave him. Thurn used the money for his personal benefit, writing checks for cash, gambiling and trading cryptocurrency.

Thurn pled guilty to the charges.

Luminate Identifies Streaming Artists Poised Radio Airplay

0

According to a recent blog post by Haley Jones, Luminate‘s Head of Independents, Tyler Childers, Koe Wetzel, and Red Clay Strays may be poised to transition from streaming success to radio airplay.

Jones wrote, “The data shows discovery still occurs through a wide variety of channels, with radio and streaming tied for influence among the average U.S. music listener after recommendations from friends and family. A Case for Musical Serendipity!” “Another surprising insight? Radio still resonates with younger audiences — 38% of Gen Z and 54% of Millennials report using it as a discovery tool.”

To leverage current discovery trends, Jones advocates for analyzing the top 1,000 artists within a specific genre who garnered the highest streaming numbers this year, comparing them to those acts that received the most airplay.

“The sweet spot for opportunity lies above the yellow line where streaming outpaces radio, and these artists may be primed for a broader fanbase and increased exposure,” Haley added.

The final broadcast was marked by sentimental moments, most notably a guest appearance from Bussey’s children, Hunter and Katelyn. The duo shared their experiences of growing up in the show’s spotlight, which aired for over 8,000 episodes.

Originating from SummitMedia’s 104.7 WZZK in Birmingham, AL, the program developed a dedicated fan base throughout the Southeastern United States, reaching more than 60 stations across 18 states.

Rick Burgess will launch his new syndicated program, The Rick Burgess Show, on January 6. The show will be distributed by Syndicated Solutions, Inc., the same company that previously managed Rick & Bubba.

Brian Stelter to Exit ‘Inside the Hive’ Podcast with Vanity Fair

0

Brian Stelter has announced the end of his involvement with the Inside the Hive podcast from Vanity Fair.

Stelter’s exit from the show isn’t unexpected. Earlier this year, he re-joined CNN after his high-profile 2022 exit when the network was under the direction of Chris Licht. He returned to CNN after media reporter Oliver Darcy departed to launch his Status News digital media entity.

Brian Stelter joined Vanity Fair in April 2023 to cover the Fox News defamation lawsuit brought forth by Dominion Voting Systems. It then evolved into a podcast covering the intersection of news and politics.

“I want to say thank you for tuning in. This is officially my last episode hosting the show for Vanity Fair,” Stelter said to begin the final episode of 2024. “Now that I’ve returned to CNN full-time as their chief media analyst, it has been such a pleasure serving as your host since the spring of 2023, when I signed on to cover the Dominion defamation lawsuit against Fox News.

“One thing led to another and it’s been such an honor to keep hosting here since. Every week, I learned something new from the guests here at the table, and I hope you did as well.”

Stelter added that Vanity Fair will continue the podcast “to cover Trump 2.0”, with more information available in early 2025.

CNN Announces Forthcoming Release of Kobe Bryant Docuseries

0

Widely considered to be among the greatest players of all time, Los Angeles Lakers and NBA legend Kobe Bryant will be spotlighted in a new docuseries being released by CNN, the network revealed on Friday. The three-part series, which is titled Kobe: The Making of a Legend, officially makes its premiere on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 9 p.m. EST and will air on the two Saturdays to follow at the same time. The project will be available for cable subscribers on CNN, and they can also tune in using the CNN website or mobile application.

This new docuseries tells the story of Bryant from his childhood in Italy to how he rose to stardom as an athlete. Furthermore, the project delves into his post-playing aspirations in storytelling and his time as a father. The project features personal interviews with Bryant’s former coaches, teammates and family friends, providing a look into the life of the sports legend. This original series also features conversations with New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame member Tracy McGrady, WNBA Hall of Fame member Sheryl Swoopes and former Los Angeles Lakers head athletic trainer Gary Vitti. Eric Johnson, Amy Entelis and Katie Hinman served as executive producers on the project.

“Five years after his passing, we are honored to share the story of Kobe Bryant – arguably one of the greatest and most competitive professional athletes of all time,” Johnson said in a statement. “While his legendary career on the court is widely celebrated, this series explores some of the lesser-known dimensions of his life. We’re proud to present a deeper, more nuanced portrait of Kobe and the complicated journey that shaped his legacy.”

Bryant, an 18-time All-Star and five-time NBA champion, is viewed as a seminal figure in the world of basketball and sports at large. He and his daughter, Gianna, along with seven other occupants, passed away in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, Calif. in January 2020. The Lakers have commemorated Bryant’s legacy by retiring both his uniform numbers and commissioned three statues to be created in his honor, the first of which was revealed this past February.

Sports Radio 810 WHB’s Content is Available Many Places, Including New FM Simulcast in Kansas City

0

The Kansas City sports radio market has undergone significant change in 2024. At the beginning of the year, the two main sports stations aired on 610 AM and 810 AM and neither station had presence on the FM dial. As of this week, both stations now have that presence on the FM side. This week, Union Broadcasting-owned 810 WHB added a simulcast on 103.7, an FM translator owned by Cumulus Media. This summer, Audacy-owned 610 Sports moved to 96.5 FM.

Cumulus had been using 103.7 to simulcast its News Talk station 710 KCMO, however that station also airs on 95.7 FM in the market. After having discussions about a possible partnership since late last year, Union Broadcasting’s Chad Boeger and Sandy Cohen were able to get a deal done with Cumulus and Kansas City Market Manager Donna Baker.

“For us, this is a brand extension of what we’re doing on the AM dial with a giant destination AM signal, so it’s just another way for people to access us if they haven’t already done it on the AM dial or done it through streaming, they have that option to have Sports Radio 810 at 103.7 FM,” said Union Broadcasting Vice President, Director of Sales Sandy Cohen.

When the announcement of the move was made, Boeger, who serves as President, General Manager for the brand which has been in the market for over 25 years said, “Sports Radio 810 WHB is an iconic Kansas City brand. It’s bigger than an FM or AM radio station. We are locally owned and operated, dedicated to promoting sports throughout the Midwest. The addition of 103.7 FM is a strategic extension of Sports Radio 810 WHB. This move provides yet another way for our dedicated listeners to connect with the biggest games, breaking news, and the hosts and teams they love, from national headlines to local favorites, all from Kansas City’s sports media destination.”

What made the partnership possible was a long-standing relationship between the two companies. For about a decade, the two worked together covering the Kansas City Chiefs. While the games aired on Cumulus-owned Classic Rock station 101.1 The Fox, much of the ancillary programming aired on 810 WHB.

“We’ve had a great relationship with Cumulus since the days they had the rights to the Chiefs radio broadcasts on game day and we carried the shoulder programming as a partner with them,” Cohen said. “So, we’ve always enjoyed a great relationship with Donna Baker and her team, and we felt like we had a need to extend our brand and so we thought of them immediately because they’ve been such a great partner in the history of our relationship. It took over a year to get this done.”

All of 810 WHB’s programming will simulcast on the translator which covers the city well, with the rare exception of when play-by-play might force the need to have different sports programming running on each of the signals.

About 103.7 and what it means for the listeners, Cohen said, “It’s a real nice city grade translator that covers the city really well. It’s a quality signal we’re really excited. If people prefer to listen on the FM dial, they can, but people are creatures of habit so some people will want to still listen on AM. They can also stream the programming or watch it on video, and now this is just one more place someone can get Sports Radio 810 content.”

As for the benefit to the partners who advertise with the station, Cohen expects some people to choose to listen on FM who previously would have tuned in on AM as well as new people who might be regular FM radio listeners who will tune in now that the programming is offered on that side of the dial as well. Either way, it provides more value to station partners.

Cohen added, “There’s a lot of places to get the content, including the advertising, so it really is a win for everyone.”

Vice Launches Sports Unit With Shows on John Calipari and Rick Pitino

0

Vice Media said it launched Vice Sports and plans to expand the amount of sports programming on Vice TV, its cable network joint venture with A+E.

The company said Vice TV will produce and air seven original sports series early next year as part of  new primetime Vice Sports programming blocks. Vice said it will produce more than 50 hours of sports documentaries, programs, events and podcasts that will be distributed globally via television and digital platforms.

“Vice’s brand and history have always been about producing authentic, differentiated, and compelling content – from our hit-series Gangs of London to HBO’s Vice,” said Bruce Dixon, CEO of Vice Media, said in a statement. “Given the demand for sports content around the world is greater than ever before, we are well-positioned to offer an alternative to the mainstream, airing not only on our own Vice TV network, but across other media platforms.”

New programming will include original series on controversial college basketball coaches Rick Pitino of St. John’s and John Calipari of Arkansas with Pitino: Red Storm Rising and Calipari: Razor’s Edge

Those shows are scheduled to debut in February and are produced with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions. “We’re excited to work with Vice TV on Calipari: Razor’s Edge, a show that will give fans an inside look at Coach John Calipari’s first season running the Arkansas men’s basketball program,” said Peyton Manning, founder of Omaha Productions. “Coach Cal is a Hall of Fame coach and a legend in the sport. We expect this series to be the first of many future collaborations between Omaha and Vice as the company expands into more sports content.”

In addition, the cable channel will air The Verdict and four original series from Vice Studios: Dark Side of the Cage, The Grudge, Sports Gone Wrong, and the highly anticipated sixth season of Dark Side of the Ring.

“We are open for business to partner with great talent to produce breakthrough sports content as we leverage our brand and history. I have never been more excited about where we’re headed across not only sports, but scripted and non-scripted content in music, news and other genres,” said Danny Gabai, co-president of Vice Studios.
