Warner Bros. Discovery to Split Linear, Streaming into Separate Divisions

0

Warner Bros. Discovery said it was restructuring the company by creating two separate divisions, one for its legacy linear networks, the other for its streaming and studio businesses.

The move echoes the announcement last month that Comcast NBCUniversal would be spinning off most of its cable networks into a new publicly traded company. The WBD restructuring could pave the way for an eventual sale or spinoff of its linear assets.

Warner Bros. Discovery stock was up 15% to $12.49 in morning trading Thursday.

The company said it expects the new structure to be in place by mid-2025. It did not announce who would be running the new divisions.

Warner Bros. Discovery had been troubled by a high debt load, losses in streaming and declining revenue and profits at its linear networks.

In the third quarter, the company’s direct-to-consumer business, which includes Max and HBO, was in the black, reporting adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $289 million,

But earnings at the networks segment was down 12% to $2.1 billion.

WBD said that the new global linear networks division will focus on maximizing profitability and free cash flow, enabling the company to pay down debt. The global streaming and studios division will focus on growth on returns on increasing invested capital.

“We continue to prioritize ensuring our Global Linear Networks business is well positioned to continue to drive free cash flow, while our Streaming & Studios business focuses on driving growth by telling the world’s most compelling stories,” said CEO David Zaslav. “Our new corporate structure better aligns our organization and enhances our flexibility with potential future strategic opportunities across an evolving media landscape, help us build on our momentum and create opportunities as we evaluate all avenues to deliver significant shareholder value.”

In addition, the company said it expects to continue to evolve its board to execute its strategy and drive future shareholder value creation.

iHeartRadio App Receives Biggest Refresh Since 2011 Debut

0

The iHeartRadio app has received its biggest refresh since its debut in 2011, with a wide variety of new features to enhance the listening experience.

The revamped app will feature an interface more similar to an in-dash car radio experience than previously seen in a digital audio app.

The iHeartRadio app will now feature presets for listeners, allowing up to 15 stations, playlists, podcasts, or artist radio stations to be accessible throughout the app. Additionally, a scan button will be available for listeners to seek new stations, filter by genre or location, and will allow listeners to find local radio stations faster.

A live radio dial, a what’s trending ranker, and updated lyrics to songs are also part of the update from iHeartMedia.

“Our listeners have made it clear that they want a streaming audio platform that’s intuitive and familiar, reflecting the simplicity of the car radio while embracing the full capabilities of streaming technology,” said iHeartMedia CEO Bob Pittman. “The redesigned iHeartRadio app does just that, bringing together the best features of the car radio and the mobile app. We are excited to offer this new and improved iHeartRadio app just in time for Christmas – it’s our special gift to our listeners.”

“The new iHeartRadio app further underscores iHeartMedia’s mission to use the power of audio to build companionship and connection,” added iHeart Digital Audio Group CEO Conal Byrne. “This experience blends the familiarity of the car radio with digital innovation to enable users to easily find the stations, artists and podcasts they know and love, fostering the fun, spontaneous discovery and connection that comes with live car radio – all through their phones, anywhere they go.”

The fresh features in the app will begin updating today and will be fully implemented by Tuesday, December 17th.

In 2011, he joined Forever Media to program Oldies station “The Pickle” WPKL/WKPL in suburban Pittsburgh, a role he maintained until his return to WARM-FM in 2015.
