Hughes began his radio career at 15, working at his hometown station 99.1 KNES. He later worked as a rock jock in College Station under the pseudonym Tommy Sledge, before eventually ascending to working as the Imaging Director and co-host of Kidd Kraddick in the Morning.

After playing a clip between Jerry Seinfeld and Hugh Jackman discussing how to know when it’s time to do something else, Hughes said “It’s time for me to get off the stage. I’ve been doing this job, quotations, for almost 30 years. Almost 30 years. I’m old. I started when I was 15. It’s time to get off the stage. So that’s why for me, I’m leaving the Fan this Friday. It will be my last day.”

When asked why, Hughes said “I’m am leaving radio. I am leaving the world of radio…I’ve just been doing it so long and I’ve been doing it so much and so early…You guys talk about waking up at 4:30 AM. I wake up at 3:15 AM. Waking up at 3:15 AM and 3:30 AM every morning for last 30 years. That takes a toll on you. I’m leaving for a new opportunity that allows me to grow in the business I’m going to and allow me to still be creative.”

Hughes later added a quality of life change will be coming from leaving the radio industry.
