Paul Finebaum Tells Cole Cubelic He Has ‘Big Fan in Kirby Smart’

Date:

There are often contentious relationships between college football coaches and the media that covers them. That doesn’t appear to be the case between an SEC head coach and SEC Network reporter and sports radio host Cole Cubelic.

“Before I go, I want to tell you, Cole, you have a big fan in Kirby Smart,” Finebaum said during his Monday appearance on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning. “He was mentioning to me off the air how impressed he was with your interview with Lane Kiffin the week before.”

“Was it the postgame when Lane was cracking jokes or the halftime when he ran away from me and didn’t want to answer any questions?,” Cubelic joked.

“I think it was the postgame that somehow went viral,” responded Finebaum. “We were talking about something and that came up. He was quite amused by that exchange.”

“I’m glad I could offer Kirby some entertainment,” Cubelic said.

“Kirby pays attention — a lot — to our world and what goes on in the media,” Greg McElroy added. “He got mad at me one time and said ‘You need to go talk to your boy’ because John Parker (Wilson) said he thought Jeremy Pruitt would be a bigger threat to Alabama than Kirby Smart would be. That was like two years later. That’s his high school coach. Of course he’s gonna say that. Come on, man! Kirby holds grudges now. You better be careful on your show today, Paul, if you ever take shots at Kirby.”

“I thought 20 hours before the biggest game of the year in college football and he was asking me about Cole Cubelic was pretty entertaining,” Finebaum concluded.

“Paul, I’ll take it. Not many folks talking about me other times,” admitted Cubelic.
