Mike Tirico: Sunday Night Football ‘Biggest Joy’ Of His Career

Date:

Mike Tirico has gotten back into the groove of having an NFL game to announce every week as the primary voice of Sunday Night Football for NBC Sports. He called the opportunity “the biggest joy” of his career thus far.

During an appearance on The Morning Roast with Bonta & Shasky, Tirico was asked about recently announcing his 200th game, and why it feels like he’s been around longer than that.

“I was not the one counting, I promise,” Tirico joked. “When the guys told me I thought ‘Ahh, that’s cool’. I’ve been lucky enough to do them all in primetime. That’s the difference. Doing Monday nights, some Thursdays along the way, and now Sunday night. I’ve found that just getting back to this rhythm of doing an NFL game every week is so much fun.”

He then added the challenge of working as a studio host was an experience he relished before getting the opportunity to return to the booth.

“I did enjoy doing the studio show again,” Tirico admitted. “Monday Night Countdown was the precursor to doing Monday Night Football for me. Then Football Night in America was the precursor during my NBC days, to doing this. But the camaraderie of a group going out every from NFL city to NFL city and having the broadcast — and it certainly has very little to do with me, or Cris (Collinsworth), or Melissa Stark — and watch it come together.

“My athletic career was non-existent. But to be a part of a team and know that camaraderie and build it together? That’s what I love the most. The chance to do this again has been the biggest joy of doing this through all these years.”
