Boomer Esiason Defends Bill Cowher After Critical Jeff Saturday Comments

Bill Cowher raised eyebrows Sunday during The NFL Today after he condemned the hiring of Jeff Saturday as the interim head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Many were quick to criticize the former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, but colleague Boomer Esiason defended Cowher during Friday’s edition of Boomer & Gio on WFAN.

“You got The NFL Today on Sunday. On the last NFL Today, Bill Cowher was trashing the Jeff Saturday hire. Called it a ‘disgrace to the coaching profession’,” Gregg Giannotti said. “There was some blowback there from Coach Cowher’s opinion there. One of them coming from Pat McAfee — who’s also a Pittsburgher — and he said ‘Bill Cowher, shut the f— up, dude’. He also got some criticism from malaprop king Christopher ‘Mad Dog’ Russo. Will Bill Cowher on The NFL Today address his critics at any point and take ’em on head on?”

“Not at all,” Esiason said. “Not that I know of. There’s no reason to. You give your impassioned opinion, and I stand by coach Cowher’s opinion. I’ve worked with him for so long. I know who he is, and I know what the NFL means to him, what he means to the NFL, how he views coaches, and how coaches view him. If there’s anyone in this world that has the right to say what he said last Sunday, it’s him.”

“The reason he would address it — to me — it really would be interesting if he at some point was like ‘Just gonna take a couple of minutes here to slap around Pat McAfee. Little punk-ass punter. Prick’,” Giannotti said in his best Cowher impersonation. “You know, something like that.”

“‘Kiss my gold jacket ass’,” Esisason said.

Giannotti then continued his impersonation of Cowher by saying “When you show up in Canton, then we can talk”.
