Binghamton, NY is down to a single sports station. Townsquare Media turned off 1360 AM over the holidays. The station had carried sports talk since 2006.
Originally an ESPN affiliate, 1360 AM rebranded as CBS Sports 1360 in 2013, becoming one of the first affiliates of the new sports radio network.
According to Mary Beth Walsh, the general manager of the Townsquare cluster in the market, the station was not supported by local advertising. It went dark on December 28.
Listeners trying to access the radio station’s website are redirected to the site for sister station News/Talk 1290. That website carries a message that reads “We’re glad that you’re here and we’re happy to tell you that here is where you will now be able to keep up with not only all of the local, regional, and national sports that you love, but also community news and the issues that are important to you.”
The market has never been a hotbed for sports radio. According to Radio Insight, two sports stations split a 1.5 share in the market. Townsquare abandoning sports on 1360 AM now leaves FOX Sports 1430 as the only sports talker in Binghamton.
