The New York Times has seen podcast success with The Daily — the fifth most-listened-to podcast on Apple Podcasts according to Chartable.com — and will look to capitalize on that success with another podcast venture.
The company is planning to launch The Headlines later this year, according to a report from Axios.
A rotating panel of of reporters have been tasked with piloting the test versions of the program, with a job posting for an executive producer for the program saying the show will lean into “the distinct advantage of the Times’ newsroom: journalists who span the globe, have unmatched expertise and can help listeners understand the world.”
The new podcast hopes to capture podcast listeners who are more interested in shorter on-demand audio offerings.
Short-form news podcasts have become more prevalent recently, with The Washington Post and Reuters each adding podcasts inside the genre.
The New York Times has seen large digital growth in the last calendar year, with its total subscriber count totaling just under 10 million.
