When Mike Greenberg left ESPN Radio, an era ended. Mike & Mike was the cornerstone of the network for decades. Greeny and partner Mike Golic were a reliable piece for local affiliates even as stars like Dan Patrick, Colin Cowherd and Scott Van Pelt moved on.
On Wednesday, news broke that ESPN Radio will soon launch its fourth different morning show since the end of Mike & Mike in 2017. The network will reportedly move on from Keyshawn, JWill and Max.
Golic took to Twitter to bemoan the state of the network.
“Damn shame and very sad what has become of ESPN Radio,” he said in response to The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand breaking the news about the network’s latest morning show.
After Mike Greenberg’s exit, Golic was partnered with his son, Mike Jr, and Trey Wingo. Golic & Wingo ran until July of 2020. That show was replaced by Keyshawn, JWill and Zubin. In May 2021, Zubin Mehenti was replaced by Max Kellerman and the show became Keyshawn, JWill and Max.
Golic has not gone out of his way to criticize or bad-mouth ESPN Radio since leaving the platform. In fact, Jay Williams told Barrett Sports Media in 2020 that Golic was willing to advise him on how to succeed on radio when it was announced that he would be part of the show replacing Golic & Wingo.
“Mike is so great,” Williams told Demetri Ravanos. “He said ‘Look, I have had an incredible run. Just be who you are, Jay. I’ve always had incredible times talking to you and relating to you. Just be the person that is relatable.’”
Marchand reported that a new morning show will be identified soon, but those hosts are expected to come at a much lower cost. ESPN Radio has been hit particularly hard as the Walt Disney Company seeks to eliminate 7000 jobs and reduce costs by $5.5 billion.
