Whoever is behind the ESPN 98.7 FM New York Twitter account found themselves in the crosshairs of The Michael Kay Show co-host Don La Greca on Thursday.
During the first hour of the show, La Greca referenced a tweet put out by the station right at 3 p.m. when the show began. The tweet asked followers a simple question, which sports team representing New York/New Jersey will win a championship and end the area’s title drought.
The graphic included on the tweet listed 10 teams with their odds. What ticked La Greca off was the fact that the team with the best odds didn’t represent the metro area. It was the Buffalo Bills at +900.
“What is it because they’re technically in New York? Do they get covered by anybody in the metropolitan area?” La Greca asked. “Is there a Post guy, a Daily News guy, is there a radio station that covers the Bills?”
“Who made the list and put the Buffalo Bills on it?” Michael Kay asked.
Even more annoying was the fact that it included a photo of a parade going down New York City’s famed Canyon of Heroes on Broadway. Don pointed out that if the Bills won their first Super Bowl title, New York City certainly wouldn’t throw a ticker-tape parade for them.
“I need to know who put this list together, and I want them on,” he said.
Co-host Peter Rosenberg deduced that it was likely staffer Jake who made the tweet. La Greca expected better.
“If he made it, he had a stroke and should see a doctor,” he said. “Cause he’s not a dumb person. He’s very smart and hard-working.”
Kay was kind of surprised at Don’s stroke comment. He said it reminded him of when he caught flack for calling out another ESPN New York staffer not that long ago.
“You set up an entire segment to eviscerate him,” Kay said. “Now you know what happened the last time we did that with somebody that works here. I got called the worst things of all time.”
La Greca said he wasn’t calling for Jake to be fired, but he just thought that for someone like Jake to make such an error with the tweet, something had to have been wrong.
“I don’t want him to be dumb, because this is dumb,” La Greca said. “But I respect him and he’s a good guy. So I’m hoping there’s a medical issue that obviously will get corrected and he’ll be OK. But I’d rather it be that than him to be dumb because I have too much respect for him.”
