Mark Schlereth and Mike Evans are not panicking enough for their colleagues at 104.3 The Fan. The morning duo said Wednesday that they spent most of Tuesday being bashed on air for saying that there was some good to take out of the Broncos’ first preseason game.
They pointed to Brandon Stokely in particular. The midday host went on a rant, calling the morning duo “got soft” and their standard for celebration has dropped because they are not worried about results.
Schlereth pointed out that the Broncos were far from alone in scoring less than 20 points in their first preseason game. That inspired Evans to sarcastically declare that it will be the most boring year in NFL history and he and Schlereth can spend Sundays on the golf course instead of watching football.
“I don’t even want to give you credit by calling it logic, but that is so flawed,” said in response to audio of Stokely’s critique. “So let me ask you, when Sean Payton took over, what was everybody’s immediate reaction as to what his biggest job was this year? Change the culture and fix Russell Wilson, yeah? Okay, at no point when everybody on the text line, on our shows, when everybody was out there saying, ‘Yeah, you know, you got to fix Russell Wilson, right? That’s what Sean Payton is here to do first.’ I at no point ever, ever heard Stokely or Zach or D Mac or Nate Jackson, ever, and please guys, if you did say it, I want to make sure you get your credit where they came out and said, ‘Oh, yeah, I expect it to happen week one or two of training camp. I expect this to be an offense that’s just mowing them down. Yeah, I expect it. I believe it and I demand that’ll happen.’ Did anybody ever say that?”
In his rant, Stokely said that the rest of the station only is asking for improvement. He said that no one was demanding the 2023 Broncos be on par with the 2004 Indianapolis Colts, one of the NFL’s most prolific offenses in history.
Schlereth pointed out that in the first game of the 2004 preseason, even the Colts only scored 7 points. That drew a hardy laugh from Evans.
“This is why occasionally the wolfpack needs to flex their muscles and just remind the sheep that they are sheep,” he said.
