Cory Mageors: Non-NFL Leagues May Be a Different Animal for Amazon Prime Video

Earlier this week, a report surfaced linking Amazon as a potential investor to the fledgling Diamond Sports Group, which operates the Bally Sports-branded regional sports networks. 105.3 The Fan host Cory Mageors wonders if the business model Prime Video has with the NFL will translate to other sports, too.

During K&C Masterpiece Tuesday, the Dallas host said he didn’t want to trash Bally Sports Southwest as it potentially reaches its demise.

“I don’t want to talk ill of Bally for the trash they put us through, alright? I don’t want to blame them completely for effing over all the fans out there all season, while everybody just wanted to watch some baseball, basketball, and hockey,” Mageors said. “I don’t want to do that, but I will.”

With the report that Amazon Prime Video could be interested in being the streaming home for local sports rights held by Bally Sports, Cory Mageors wondered if the business model the company currently has with its Thursday Night Football production will hold true for MLB, NBA, and NHL rights, too.

“I am kind of curious if it will be as easy as you just have to have Amazon Prime, and you don’t have to have a package to go along with it. We’re just going to provide it the same way we do the NFL stuff,” Mageors pondered. “Because I do see what they’re doing with the NFL.

“They’re like ‘We’re gonna sell ads, and that’s where we’re making our money. We’re not concerned about you having to pay a premium for an extra app or anything like that. We’re just going to sell our ads and because we know the NFL is a cash cow, we are going to make our money back.’ But I do feel like with MLB and these other sports, it might be a little more difficult than that.”
