Things are not good for the Chicago Bears right now and their head coach Matt Eberflus is on the hottest seat in the league. Eberflus is a weekly guest with ESPN Chicago’s Kap & J. Hood show hosted by David Kaplan and Jonathan Hood and today’s interview went about as well as the season has gone for the team.

The Bears fell to the New England Patriots, 19-3 and fell to 4-5 on the season. The game looked about as bad as the score would indicate, if not worse. The hosts were trying to get an explanation from the head coach who would either give a standard, company line answer or his mobile phone would cut out.

The hosts asked about reviewing the film and the coach started to talk about how things have to be better as his phone was cutting in and out. Hood put him on hold to try and re-establish a better connection.

Kaplan was already starting to get aggravated between the connection and the parts of the answers he could hear. “I’ll wait until we get him back on, ask what I want to ask, but what we watched yesterday was one of the most disgusting performances I’ve ever seen, to be honest with you.”

As Eberflus came back on the question was again asked, “Coach, you watched the film. What stood out most to you?”

“Yeah, you guys there?” Eberflus said as again the phone was in and out. This time the hosts decided to take a break and see if they could get a better connection or get the coach on a land line. They came back quickly and as they did, they asked again for his review of the offensive performance. This time, while the answers were still standard, the connection was better for a few minutes.

Kaplan recapped a question he asked the previous week as to whether or not this is now something that can be labeled as a crisis.

As Eberflus started to answer, the phone cut out again and Kaplan said, “Coach? Coach, your cell phone’s as bad as the offense right now.” Hood put the coach on hold and Kaplan continued, “Dang! I mean, come on, man. This is 2024. Can we get a freaking landline? I mean, what are we doing? Seriously. Get the man a phone that works, please.”

The irony of the situation was not lost on the hosts as they talked about how communication had indeed been a problem for the Bears all season long.
