Stan Verrett to Depart ESPN at the End of Summer: Report

Verrett has been hosting "SportsCenter" since 2009, primarily working with Neil Everett.

Date:

Stan Verrett, longtime anchor for SportsCenter on ESPN, will reportedly not be having his contract renewed by the network and will thus depart the entity later in the summer. Verrett, who joined ESPN in 2000 anchoring on ESPNEWS, had been hosting the Los Angeles-based edition of SportsCenter alongside Neil Everett for 14 years. Since Everett retired from the network in 2023, he had been hosting the late-night edition of the flagship program with Linda Cohn until signing off earlier in the week. Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports was the first to report this news.

“My life is in Los Angeles is now,” Verrett said in a social media post on X. “Nothing but gratitude for 25 years of living a dream at ESPN. I’m not retiring. Really excited about the future and some incredible opportunities. Stay tuned.”

Glasspiegel reported that there are plans for Verrett to anchor the show in the coming months, along with appearing at stops during the SportsCenter 50 States in 50 Days event that begins on June 27. Verrett recently hosted the final edition of SportsCenter from Los Angeles alongside Everett and Cohn ahead of its move to the Bristol headquarters.

“We’re grateful for Stan’s many contributions and all he has brought to SportsCenter over the years,” Dave Roberts, executive vice president and executive editor, sports news and entertainment at ESPN, said in a statement. “We thank him and wish him continued success.”

Before his time with ESPN, Verrett worked on the air at WDSU-TV, an NBC-affiliated station in New Orleans, La., and he is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. Verrett also worked as a sports anchor and reporter at WVEC-TV, an ABC-affiliated station in Norfolk, Va., and he also hosted a morning radio show in the city, along with programs in Charleston, S.C. and Washington, D.C.
