KNBR Officially Move Studios Out Of San Francisco

“This really does symbolize a new era at KNBR.”

Date:

Since April of 1922, KNBR has been broadcasting from San Francisco, and over the years, the station has grown to become “The Sports Leader” as it proudly holds in its namesake. However, for the first time in 103 years, KNBR will no longer call San Francisco its broadcasting home, as Cumulus Media has officially moved all their stations located at the Battery Street studios to a new home in Daly City.

On Thursday afternoon, the final broadcast on KNBR from the San Francisco-based studios featured Papa and Silver signing off just before the 2 p.m. local time start of Dirty Work, featuring Adam Copeland and Derek Papa. That show broadcast live from their new location on Junipero Serra Blvd in Daly City, roughly 15 miles south.

“This really does symbolize a new era at KNBR,” Papa said in an emotional final segment that aired from the longtime home of the radio station.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Cumulus first hinted at a relocation for their radio brands last November, as the company was amid a wave of layoffs. In a statement that same month, Larry Blumhagen, Regional Vice President and Market Manager for Cumulus San Francisco, said the move to the new location was the latest step in the company’s evolution toward the future.

“We continue to evolve as an organization committed to excellence and to growing for the future,” said Blumhagen in November.

Now, with the opening of the new space, Cumulus will be sharing the Daly City facility with Bonneville, another company that owns several Bay Area radio stations. Meanwhile, other competitors such as Audacy and iHeart Radio continue to broadcast live from San Francisco.

“Dude, we’re here,” Copeland said in the first segment from the new studio, which overlooks a baseball field at Marchbank Park. “Nice digs, we made it look good, it looks nice. We’ve got a whole baseball field in front of us.”

Despite the move, KNBR continues to broadcast on 104.5 FM and 680 AM, maintaining its role as the flagship radio home of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers.
