CBS News made sweeping changes to 60 Minutes on Thursday. That included the exit of Cecilia Vega. She’s now speaking out about her firing.
What We Know: Cecilia Vega was one of several 60 Minutes staffers to depart the show on Thursday. She originally joined the news magazine in 2023. Following her exit, she released a statement to Michael M. Grynbaum of The New York Times expressing her concerns about the show’s future.
What They Said: “I was fired today. My contract as a correspondent for 60 Minutes was not set to expire until March 2027. I have the utmost respect and admiration for my colleagues at 60 Minutes and the stories that air every Sunday. But I very much fear what comes next for and the future of the legendary broadcast. In recent months, my producing teams and I have experienced efforts to insert political bias into our stories. Reporting teams have held back on submitting story pitches about important news topics out of fear of the internal repercussions. Let’s call this what it is: censorship, both imposed and self-driven. It is dangerous for the show and dangerous for democracy.” -Cecilia Vega
What Remains Unclear: Who else, if anyone, will exit 60 Minutes. Of the seven correspondents from the past season, only four remain.
What It Means: Cecilia Vega becomes the latest in a string of those exiting the program who have shared worries about its editorial direction. Questioning or criticizing what has been labeled as “corporate interference” has become a common theme for those departing. At some point, those folks move from “disgruntled employees” to truth tellers.
