Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery will remain separated for now. A federal judge has extended the pause on their proposed merger.
What We Know: U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín extended a temporary restraining order blocking the transaction for another two weeks. The extension means Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery cannot close their deal before at least Aug. 17. The judge said the additional time will allow both sides to establish a schedule for the ongoing legal proceedings. She cited unresolved issues surrounding two preliminary injunction motions, the hearing format, and the companies’ willingness to follow the existing restrictions. Additionally, the judge ordered Paramount, the state attorneys general involved in the case, and the Writers Guild of America to meet and discuss a path forward. The parties must submit a joint report on those discussions by July 24.
What’s At Stake: Paramount has requested a three-day evidentiary hearing as the judge considers whether to issue a preliminary injunction. Such an order could significantly delay the merger while the legal process continues. The WGA has separately challenged the transaction, arguing against the combination. The group will participate in the scheduled Aug. 3 hearing.
What Remains Unclear: It remains uncertain whether the involved parties can reach an agreement on a timeline for future proceedings. The judge noted she cannot extend the temporary restraining order beyond its current limits unless both sides agree to continue the restrictions.
What It Means: The Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery merger faces another legal hurdle. However, the deal remains active as the companies prepare for the next court hearing and attempt to move the process forward.
