WGN Radio Announces Multi-Year Extension With Chicago Blackhawks

"The Blackhawks and WGN are two brands deeply rooted in Chicago, connecting fans through game coverage, conversation and storytelling."

Date:

WGN Radio and the Chicago Blackhawks are staying together. The sides signed a multi-year rightsholder extension Monday.

What We Know: WGN has been the Blackhawks’ flagship station since the 2008-09 season, nearly two decades of coverage. The new deal keeps that partnership intact for preseason and regular-season broadcasts alike. Also, Steve Konroyd will be the new fulltime game analyst following the passing of Troy Murray last March. Moreover, WGN will air three preseason games — September 21, 24 and 26 — plus all 84 regular-season contests. In addition, broadcasts reach 38 states and Canada, and stream on wgnradio.com, team apps, and platforms like TuneIn and iHeartRadio.

What They Said: Blackhawks President of Business Operations Jaime Faulkner: “WGN Radio has been the home for Blackhawks hockey for almost 20 seasons, and we’re thrilled to continue this long-standing partnership. As ‘Chicago’s Very Own,’ WGN Radio shares a deep commitment to our fans, delivering the highest-quality live game broadcasts and team coverage to listeners across Chicagoland.”

Mary Sandberg Boyle, Vice President and General manager for WGN: “The Blackhawks and WGN are two brands deeply rooted in Chicago, connecting fans through game coverage, conversation and storytelling. We deeply feel the loss of our friend and colleague Troy Murray, whose voice, insight and love for the Blackhawks leave an extraordinary legacy. We’re grateful to have Steve Konroyd join John Wiedeman in the booth as we begin this next chapter.”

What Remains Unclear: Neither side disclosed the length or financial terms of the extension.

What It Means: Consistency matters in play by play. The extension will carry the Chicago Blackhawks games on WGN past two decades on the station. Also, the addition of Konroyd, a former Blackhawks defenseman, provides listeners with a known personality surrouding the team. In addition, he’ll join longtime voice John Wiedeman, now entering his 20th season. Charlie Roumeliotis returns for year three hosting pre- and postgame shows. Moreover, they anchor continuity for a franchise leaning on tradition amid change.
