Tony Tilford Joins WAKY Louisville as Operations Manager

"We are thrilled to have Tony, who has programmed some of America's greatest radio stations,"

Date:

Tony Tilford lands his next gig as Operations Manager at Classic Hits WAKY/Louisville. The 40-year radio veteran returns to familiar territory under Randy Michaels’ Wakyana ownership.

What We Know WAKY owner Randy Michaels named Tilford to replace Ben Bailey, who retired at the end of August. Tilford spent the previous decade directing rock programming for iHeartMedia’s Kentucky-Indiana region. Moreover, he programmed both WQMF/Louisville and WKQQ/Lexington before his July departure during corporate restructuring. His career spans legendary stations including WMMS/Cleveland, Q95/Indianapolis, and WTUE/Dayton, starting with weekend overnights at WKQQ/Lexington back in 1985.

What They Said “Tony learned programming at Jacor,” Michaels noted. “He is solid. In no time, he will remember how to schedule more music than commercials. Tony knows how to do radio that isn’t cookie-cutter corporate, and that’s what WAKY needs.” Additionally, WAKY VP/GM Bill Gentry emphasized the station’s unique position. “We are thrilled to have Tony, who has programmed some of America’s greatest radio stations,” Gentry said. Meanwhile, Tilford expressed genuine enthusiasm about the reunion: “The opportunity to work for Randy Michaels and Bill Gentry again was too good to pass up. It feels like coming home.”

What Remains Unclear Industry observers wonder how quickly Tilford will adapt to WAKY’s fiercely independent programming philosophy. Furthermore, questions linger about whether his corporate radio background translates to the station’s locally-owned and locally-programmed approach. Finally, no formal timeline exists for rolling out any programming initiatives under his leadership.

What It Means Tilford’s hire is a no-brainer for Wakyana and WAKY Louisville. His market history and proven work ethic make him the clear choice to move this station forward. Tilford’s hands-on programming leadership will directly drive brand growth and audience loyalty. This move positions WAKY to compete aggressively while maintaining its fiercely independent identity.
