Luis Silberwasser is leaving TNT Sports as Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery prepare to merge. Meanwhile, CBS Sports chief David Berson will lead the combined company’s new global sports group, according to CNBC’s Alex Sherman.
What We Know: Silberwasser joined Warner Bros. Discovery as chairman and CEO of sports in June 2022. Since then, TNT Sports has landed a seven-year NASCAR deal and launched live sports on HBO Max. Now, CBS Sports, TNT Sports and WBD Sports will roll up into one global group under David Berson. Additionally, that group will oversee every network, platform and territory.
What’s At Stake: With the merger, Skydance now will have access touchpoints in nearly every major pro and college sports entity in the U.S., with the notable exception of the NBA. Pairing Berson’s experience with CBS Sports, it will add a proven leader to oversee the combined assets under the new platform.
What Remains Unclear: However, Silberwasser’s next move remains unknown. It’s also unclear when his exit officially takes effect, with the merger set to close Tuesday. Likewise, there’s no word yet on how TNT Sports leadership will shift under Berson.
What It Means: Ultimately, the move puts two major sports operations under one leader. Notably, the combined company, which will go by Skydance, owns a massive rights portfolio. That list includes NFL Sunday afternoon games, all of March Madness, college football and the NHL. On top of that, NASCAR, the French Open and The Masters also fall under its umbrella.
