Kirk Minihane Unsure About Long Term Status With Barstool Sports

"I would love to stay here. But, I don't think I'll get re-signed."

Date:

Kirk Minihane doubts Barstool Sports will re-sign him when his contract expires next year. Still, the longtime host insists he has no plans to retire.

What We Know: Minihane joined Barstool in May 2019 after leaving WEEI. Since then, he has signed three deals with the company. Last November, he ended his show following a mental health hiatus, but made a return in January. Meanwhile, his current contract expires next fall. Minihane discussed his long term status with the company during his program on Wednesday saying he’s unsure if he’ll sign another deal with Barstool Sports.

What They Said: (All quotes via The Kirk Minihane Show):

Kirk Minihane unsure about his long term future with Barstool Sports: “I would love to stay here. But, I don’t think I’ll get re-signed. My gut tells me no. I could be wrong. It doesn’t feel, I don’t know. I could be completely wrong. I have no idea, and would love to stay. This is not like a thing. We talk on the air about these things. February, March. I’ll start [contract talks].”

Kirk Minihane says he has no plans to retire: “I’m not retiring. I can’t. Well, I could. But, I would do something else for sure and get everybody involved. I hope and would like to make what I make. I think I’ve signed three deals here, maybe. The entire length of negotiations have been 20 minutes. So, I could probably call Dave [Portnoy] this afternoon and get an answer. He’s pretty straightforward. But we’ll see. We’ll see what goes on next year.”

What Remains Unclear: Minihane plans to begin contract talks in February or March. However, Barstool hasn’t publicly addressed his status. Furthermore, Minihane admitted he could be completely wrong about the outcome. Finally, if he does leave, his next destination remains unknown with a reported staff shakeup coming to the show next year.

What It Means: Ultimately, Minihane’s comments suggest a seven-year Barstool run may be nearing its end. Yet, by his own account, past negotiations have lasted about 20 minutes in total. As a result, an answer could come quickly once talks begin. In the meantime, his January return doubles as an audition for potential suitors for the show with a staffing shakeup potentially at hand.
