Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos says live sports help the streamer break through. He made the case Tuesday during a Q3 earnings call shadowed by layoffs and engagement concerns for the streaming platform.
What We Know: Netflix posted $13.4 billion in Q3 revenue, up 11.5% year-over-year. Meanwhile, cutting roughly 1,000 staffers, about 6% of its workforce, will cost $161 million in Q4 operating income. Additionally, chief content officer Bela Bajaria is departing after 10 years with the company. Former Disney and Fox executive Peter Rice will replace her. While live sports is still a relatively small piece of the Netflix content ecosystem, Sarandos stood by the investment by the company saying it’s driving ad revenues for Netflix.
What They Said: Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO Netflix: “Live events like the Canelo-Crawford fight or the ‘eventized’ sports that we do with the NFL and MLB. These events break through. They stand out, they drive new membership, they add fuel to our ad revenues, they please our existing members and they just generally enhance the value of Netflix.”
What Remains Unclear: However, Netflix has not detailed long-term savings or reinvestment plans tied to the layoffs with additional sports programming. Overall, Netflix shares are down about 45% over the past year due to engagement concerns by the market. It remains to be seen if Netflix will add more live sports events especially with the Paramount Skydance merger with Warner Bros. Discovery recently taking place with its combined sports portfolio.
What It Means: Ultimately, live sports remain a tiny slice of Netflix’s lineup, yet they carry outsized weight. Next up, NFL games on Thanksgiving Eve and Christmas will test that value. Similarly, December’s Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua fight and next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup will follow. Consequently, those events could shape how investors view Netflix’s engagement story heading into 2027.
