The real WKRP is finally doing a turkey drop. However, this time no live birds will fall from the sky.
What We Know: According to a report by WVXU reporter John Kiesewetter, WKRP-FM will recreate the classic sitcom stunt at 7:30 p.m. on November 25 in Hamilton, Ohio. Instead of using a helicopter, the station will drop miniature rubber turkeys from a fire truck ladder. Listeners can buy $10 rubber turkeys, and the one landing closest to the target wins cash. Meanwhile, host Dave Mason is unveiling the promotion and commemorative shirts and hats today.
What They Said: Jeff Ziesmann, WKRP-FM general manager: “WKRP is bringing the legend back, but this time, as God is my witness, this time we’ve got it right.”
Laura Ziesmann, vice president of sales: “Due to darkness and potential weather concerns, a helicopter is not a reliable option. Using a fire truck allows us to ensure the promotion can take place regardless of weather conditions.”
What Remains Unclear: Still, the station hasn’t said when or how listeners can buy turkeys. Likewise, it has not disclosed the size of the cash prize. Furthermore, nobody knows yet how many turkeys will drop on Thanksgiving eve.
What It Means: Ultimately, the stunt turns 48 years of sitcom nostalgia into a live event and charity drive. All net proceeds from turkey and T-shirt sales support Butler County’s Open Door Food Pantry. Moreover, Jeff and Laura Ziesmann and partner Randy Michaels keep leaning into the brand they bought in April. For a classic rock simulcast covering Dry Ridge to Dayton, few promotions fit better.
