The college football media is waiting with baited breath for an update on the health of Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach. He was rushed to the hospital on Sunday after what the school describes as a “medical event in his home.” As of Monday, he remained in critical condition.
Paul Finebaum made his regular appearance on JOX 94.5 in Birmingham on Monday morning. The first question he was asked by host Cole Cubelic was about his relationship with Leach.
“He’s always been one of the most unpredictable people and I feel fortunate that I knew Coach Leach and worked with him before he got back into coaching,” Finebaum answered. “I got to know him quite well ten years ago when we were doing some things for SiriusXM and he is one of the funniest and smartest people I’ve ever dealt with.”
He added that in the absence of information, he has seen a lot of speculation about what may have happened to Mike Leach. He has also seen a number of people in the industry take to social media expressing disbelief.
“I can’t speculate beyond what people have been saying, but it is a jarring thing to wake up to on a Monday morning to say the least.”
Mike Leach has missed some public appearances he had scheduled recently. They included trips to Las Vegas for the College Football Hall of Fame induction and to Tampa to meet with the media ahead of January’s Reliaquest Bowl matchup with Illinois.
The Clarion Ledger reported on Monday that it was a massive heart attack that befell the coach. It also brought on seizures.
