Phil Simms, Super Bowl XXI MVP and longtime New York Giants quarterback, is returning to NBC Sports more than three decades after making his broadcast debut with the network. Simms will serve as a game analyst for multiple Big Ten football matchups exclusively on Peacock this fall.
Simms will kick off his NBC return during the college football season opener on Friday, Aug. 29, when the Illinois Fighting Illini host the Western Illinois Leathernecks at 7:30 p.m. The game will stream exclusively on Peacock. The following weekend, Simms will be on the call for Miami (OH) at Rutgers on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 3:30 p.m. A third game, which Simms will also analyze, will be announced at a later date. For each matchup, he will work alongside NBC Sports play-by-play voice Paul Burmeister.
“I am very happy to be working again for NBC Sports doing college football games,” Simms said. “I have had a great relationship with Paul Burmeister over many years, so I know it’s going to be fun and exciting to work with him. I appreciate NBC for giving me this opportunity, and I can’t wait for the college football season to start.”
Simms originally joined NBC Sports as an NFL analyst from 1995 to 1998, working alongside legends Dick Enberg and Paul Maguire, and calling Super Bowls XXX and XXXII. He also contributed to NBC’s coverage of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics as a weightlifting announcer and served as a sideline reporter for the NBA on NBC.
“Phil is an elite analyst who gives viewers the why of the game, while making sure to entertain,” said Sam Flood, Executive Producer at NBC Sports. “We’re excited to welcome him back to the team and look forward to having him on the call for Peacock.”
Following his initial NBC tenure, Simms spent 26 seasons with CBS Sports as both an NFL game and studio analyst, where he called multiple Super Bowls and became a familiar voice to football fans nationwide. His experience and insight made him a staple of CBS’s lead announcing team until his departure in 2023.
Adding to the family connection, NBC Sports NFL and college football analyst Chris Simms, Phil’s son and a former NFL quarterback, will also call multiple Big Ten games this season. Chris Simms has served as a Big Ten game analyst and contributed to NBC Sports’ College Countdown and Football Night in America studio shows.
Simms brings a storied football career to his return. A two-time Super Bowl champion and two-time Pro Bowler, he spent 15 seasons with the New York Giants, throwing for 33,462 yards and 199 touchdowns. His standout performance in Super Bowl XXI helped the Giants secure their first title with a 39-20 victory over the Denver Broncos. Simms completed 22 of 25 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, setting a Super Bowl single-game record with an 88% completion rate.
