Vox Media Sells SB Nation, The Verge, Others to Penske Media

Date:

After previously selling its podcast portfolio and other assets, Vox Media made the sale of its remaining brands official today. They’re going to Penske Media.

What We Know: Vox Media has completed the sale of its remaining publishing and technology assets to Penske Media, bringing a years-long transition to a close. The deal includes brands such as Eater, The Verge, SB Nation, Thrillist, PopSugar, The Dodo, and Punch. It also transfers advertising and data products, including Concert and Forte, to Penske Media. Meanwhile, Ryan Pauley will join Penske Media and oversee the division housing the newly acquired properties.

What They Said: “I am very proud to welcome this tremendous team and leading brands to Penske Media. We have long admired these unique brands and companies, and I’m thrilled to welcome Ryan Pauley to PMC.” -Penske Media CEO Jay Penske

“These distinct digital brands bring highly engaged audiences with them, complement our existing portfolio, strengthen our content offering, and expand the possibilities for the hundreds of live events PMX will produce each year.” -Penske Media President Craig Perreault

What Remains Unclear: Neither company disclosed financial terms for the transaction. Questions also remain about how Penske Media will integrate the newly acquired brands into its existing portfolio. In addition, the companies haven’t outlined potential operational changes, staffing adjustments, or long-term strategies for the individual properties. While Pauley will remain involved, Penske Media hasn’t detailed how each brand will fit within its broader business structure.

What It Means: The sale marks the end of an era for one of digital publishing’s most recognizable companies. Vox Media grew from a collection of sports blogs into a network that included technology, food, travel, lifestyle, and culture brands. However, the transaction also reflects broader changes across the digital media landscape. Many venture-backed publishers that emerged during the past two decades have either been sold, restructured, or shut down. Now, Penske Media adds another group of established digital brands to a portfolio that already includes several major publishing properties, further consolidating ownership across the media industry.
