ESPN just delivered its strongest first-half viewership in over ten years. Fans logged 288 billion minutes across ESPN and ESPN on ABC during Nielsen’s first-half 2026 window.
What We Know: According to a release, total viewership climbed 13% year-over-year, marking the best first-half mark since 2012. ESPN on ABC posted its best first half since 2006, reaching 78 billion minutes, up 16%. Meanwhile, the networks’s average minute audience hit 800K, up 12% and its best since 2016. Primetime also surged to 2.1 million average viewers, up from 1.9 million a year earlier.
What Remains Unclear: The release didn’t specify which sports or telecasts drove the gains. It’s also unclear how much streaming or ESPN Unlimited subscribers contributed to the 288 billion minutes.
What It Means: The results extend ESPN’s viewership momentum from a record-setting end of 2025 into 2026. With 19% of all sports minutes watched, the network edged past NBC’s 18% to lead every individual network. Combined with a 32% share across ESPN’s full portfolio, the first-half numbers suggest accelerating strength heading into the second half of the year. Mind you, the numbers are also influenced somewhat by the change is measurement with Nielsen Big Data + Panel. Even so, the results are still evidence that ESPN continues to be the world wide leader in sports.
