Tony Romo faces three new legal citations. His broadcasting career now sits in limbo. Through representation, Romo says he accepts full responsibility for his actions, and is communicating with CBS Sports on next steps.
What We Know: Milwaukee County prosecutors issued Romo three citations Thursday. Unsafe passing on the right, first-offense OWI and possessing open intoxicants. The charges stem from a July 23 traffic stop. Deputies say Romo passed cars in a gore area separating interstate traffic from an on-ramp. Romo also performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was booked on suspicion of OWI after previously being cited for refusing an intoxication test. Therefore, he’s due in court September 21. CBS Sports placed Romo on leave following the arrest, and the sides are now discussing next steps for his future at the network.
What They Said: Spokesperson for Tony Romo (via TMZ): “Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved. We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps.”
What Remains Unclear: CBS Sports president David Berson called Romo’s status an “evolving situation” the network is still assessing. Moreover, his long term status with the network remains unknown.
What It Means: Romo, 46, built his broadcasting career on the strength of his Cowboys legacy and four Pro Bowl trips. Now that reputation faces its toughest test yet off the field. CBS, meanwhile, must weigh loyalty against optics as the network’s marquee analyst awaits a courtroom outcome. Ultimately, the network’s decision could reshape its NFL booth for years to come.
