Tony Romo and CBS Sports Mutually Part Ways

"I am grateful for my time with CBS Sports and for the continued support of my family and friends, as well as the NFL community and fans."

Date:

CBS Sports and Tony Romo are officially done. The two sides mutually agreed to end their nine-year partnership.

What We Know: Milwaukee County deputies arrested Romo on July 23 on suspicion of operating while intoxicated (OWI). Subsequently, CBS placed him on indefinite leave eight days after the arrest. Romo later pleaded no contest to a civil OWI offense in Wisconsin. Meanwhile, J.J. Watt will remain alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on the lead team for the rest of the season. Today, both CBS Sports and Romo released statements on their parting of ways.

What They Said: Tony Romo: “I’m proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years. I approached my role as a game analyst the way I’ve approached everything in my life–with a desire to win and be the best that I can be. I’m going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity. I am grateful for my time with CBS Sports and for the continued support of my family and friends, as well as the NFL community and fans.”

CBS Sports Statement: “CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward. JJ Watt will continue to partner with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on our lead NFL announce team for the rest of the season. All other teams remain the same, including Ian Eagle, Ross Tucker and Evan Washburn.”

What Remains Unclear: Neither side disclosed financial terms of the separation if any. Romo signed a 10-year, $180 million deal with CBS in 2020. Moreover, four years and roughly $72 million reportedly remained on that contract.

What It Means: Ultimately, CBS now has a clear path forward in its top booth. Watt gets the rest of the season to prove he belongs beside Nantz. Romo, on the other hand, plans to step away and focus on his health and family. As a result, one of the NFL’s most recognizable voices exits the broadcast landscape, at least for now.
