CBS Sports analyst Brian Kelly says he has interest in the Florida State football head coaching vacancy. The former LSU coach voiced his interest Tuesday, two days after the school fired Mike Norvell.
What We Know: Kelly owns a 297-109-2 career record across stops at LSU, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Central Michigan, and Grand Valley State. He is the winningest coach in Notre Dame history and won two Division II titles at Grand Valley. Meanwhile, he spent this season as an analyst for CBS Sports and SiriusXM’s College Sports Radio. It marks his first season away from coaching since 1983. In an interview on SiriusXM radio Tuesday, Kelly says he is interested in the vacant head coaching position at Florida State.
What They Said: Brian Kelly (via SiriusXM College Sports Radio): “Yes. When you’re talking to an unemployed football coach, every job’s a great job, you know? But Florida State, look, I’ve got a great history with Florida State, great games. I know what that’s like, the history and tradition of Florida State, playing in that state, and the fan base.”
Brian Kelly (via SiriusXM College Sports Radio): “Anytime you have an incredibly brand driven, great tradition and history, there’s a want and desire to be part of somebody that has had that success. Certainly, leading that program, from anyone’s perspective, would be an honor and privilege.”
What Remains Unclear: It remains unknown whether Florida State shares Kelly’s interest. In addition, Kelly has also been linked to openings at Maryland, Rutgers, and NC State.
What It Means: Kelly’s interest gives Florida State a proven winner with immediate name recognition. However, his LSU exit raises fair questions after the Tigers stalled last season. Kelly has said most of his LSU hindsight centers on hiring, not culture. Ultimately, Florida State must decide whether that self-assessment is enough.
