SNY is cutting deep into its studio lineup and digital operation. The Mets’ regional sports network has already reportedly canceled two shows, closed its website and laid off much of its editorial staff.
What We Know: According to reporting by The Athletic, SNY canceled Baseball Night in New York and Sportsnite. The network also shuttered its website Friday, and all of the moves take effect immediately. However, SNY will still produce pregame and postgame shows for the Mets and New York Jets. Additionally, Mets Hot Stove and WFAN’s simulcast of The Carton Show with Chris McMonigle will remain on the air. SNY declined comment on the matter to The Athletic.
What’s At Stake: The network could be downsizing for a potential sale to a bidder. Steve Cohen, who owns the New York Mets, at one time showed interest in buying a controlling stake in the network following his purchase of the Mets. However, what the future entails for the network is anyone’s guess at this time.
What Remains Unclear: Still, several key questions remain unanswered. For instance, SNY has not said how many editorial staffers lost their jobs. It is also unclear whether the network plans to replace the canceled shows or relaunch its digital content. Meanwhile, on-air contributors Chelsea Janes, Ian Begley and Connor Hughes will remain, though their future roles are unknown.
What It Means: Ultimately, SNY appears to be narrowing its focus to live game coverage and its core team shows. Without Sportsnite and Baseball Night in New York, the network loses two signature studio programs. Moreover, the website closure removes a key digital outlet for Mets and Jets fans. As regional sports networks tighten budgets, SNY’s moves fit a broader industry pattern of cost-cutting.
