CNN Adding Weekend Encore of Real Time with Bill Maher

CNN has announced it is adding a replay of Real Time with Bill Maher to its weekend lineup.

The show — which originally airs on Friday evenings on HBO — will begin airing on CNN on Saturdays at 8:00 PM ET on March 23rd.

“The addition of Real Time With Bill Maher to CNN’s weekend primetime lineup marks the start of a commitment and investment into topical entertainment programming that we’re bringing to the weekends,” said Amy Entelis, CNN Executive Vice President of Talent, CNN Originals and Creative Development for CNN Worldwide.

“We’ve seen that audiences enjoy Bill’s perspective and approach to news and information, and we’re looking forward to the show now being on CNN.”

Real Time with Bill Maher is in its 22nd season. The “Overtime” segment of the show had previously been shown on CNN on Friday evenings at 11:30 PM ET. That will end with the entire hour-long show receiving an encore presentation on Saturdays in primetime.

John Kobylt: News Consumers ‘Hear What They Want to Hear’

A recent study from the University of Illinois claims 45% of respondents couldn’t decipher what was news and what was opinion when presented with different options. KFI AM-640 host John Kobylt believes that survey.

While discussing the results, Kobylt shared his belief that cable news and talk radio audiences only hear what they want to agree with.

“People want to hear what they want to hear. And people get mad at me all the time. We get comments and emails and things on social media, and they think I sold out one way or the other,” said Kobylt. “Look, I’m telling you what’s going on. I’ll tell you whether I agree or disagree, but I’m not making it up. And what I noticed is that people’s opinions say a lot more about them than it does me.

“People have really weird prisms that they look at life through and they have decided to invest emotionally and intellectually in ideologies and philosophies. And they’re impervious to the fact they’re impervious to news. If it contradicts what they believe, they just flat out don’t believe it.”

John Kobylt added that cable news outlets intentionally try to confuse their audiences, but the problem is exacerbated by viewers who solely look at news items through a political lens.

“The trend nowadays, especially on cable news, is a blurring of opinion. In fact, and depending on event, it’s mostly on partisan leanings. So people that hear something — and I see this with my friends on both sides — based on the political philosophy they’ve bought into that they’re emotionally connected to, two people look at the same story and get a wildly different interpretation of it,” he continued. “And both may think a story is biased. We can agree to disagree, but you can’t agree to disagree that two plus two equals 22.”

New ESPN+ Series ‘Full Court Press’ Features WCBB Stars Caitlin Clark, Kamilla Cardoso, Kiki Rice

ESPN will finally have Caitlin Clark on their airwaves courtesy of a new documentary series directed by Kristen Lappas and produced by Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions. Full Court Press stars Caitlin Clark, Kamilla Cardoso and Kiki Rice, as they navigate the perils of their respective seasons and march towards the Women’s College Basketball Tournament.

The show has followed these three players throughout this record-breaking women’s college basketball season, capturing key moments such as Kamilla Cardoso’s game-winning three-pointer to send South Carolina to the SEC Championship, Kiki Rice’s experiences as the first college athlete to have an NIL deal with the vaunted Jordan brand, and filming the lead up to Caitlin Clark, the all-time leading scorer in the history of NCAA collegiate basketball, in her final year at Iowa. Audiences will travel from Paris to Brazil, from sold-out arenas in Baton Rouge to Iowa City for the biggest matchups, all to give fans a window into this unique moment in the sport’s history.

“I remember what it meant to the University of Tennessee and the entire state when Pat Summitt led the Lady Vols to back-to-back national titles during my time in Knoxville,” said Peyton Manning, founder of Omaha Productions. “We’re excited to share the stories of these three amazing women to a national audience at this incredible moment for women’s basketball.”

Women’s college basketball has become a ratings juggernaut for ESPN, CBS, NBC, and FOX thanks in part to Clark’s massive influence on the game. Clark set viewership records throughout the year, capping her historic final year off with the most-viewed women’s college basketball conference championship game ever.

“As someone who has grown up a devout fan of the women’s game, I am thrilled that we are able to make this show at this pivotal moment in the history of the sport,” Lappas said. “To be able to pull back the curtain and document Caitlin Clark’s historic season has been a privilege for our entire team. Each of our three players brings a unique set of storylines to the table, and we hope we’re able to capture both the excitement and the complexities surrounding what it means to be an elite female basketball player in 2024.”  

Episodes 1 and 2 of Full Court Press will air on Saturday, May 11th at 1 p.m. ET on ABC, and Episodes 3 and 4 will air on Sunday, May 12th at 12:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Following their linear premieres, all episodes will be immediately available to stream on ESPN+.

JJ Redick Announces New Podcast with LeBron James – ‘Mind the Game’

ESPN basketball analyst JJ Redick announced via X today, a new podcast with LeBron James called ‘Mind the Game,’ which is set to debut on Tuesday March 19. The show is being produced by James’ company Uninterrupted as well as Redick’s ThreeFourTwo Productions.

Redick told Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, “It’s meant to be a very free-flowing conversation about the sport and about the game. If you look at it in a very simplistic way, it’s just about basketball.”

A preview was posted to the show’s YouTube page and shows James and Redick in a comfortable setting, drinking wine and having a deep discussion about specific basketball plays. At one point, you can see Redick diagramming a play on a piece of paper.

A written description of the show states:

“Welcome to our brand show presented by Uninterrupted and ThreeFourTwo Productions. ‘Mind The Game‘ is an entry into the heralded basketball minds of LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers and JJ Redick of ESPN and The Old Man and the Three. Sean Hannity: Jake Tapper, Rachel Maddow Aren’t Honest With Their Audiences

Last week, Sean Hannity returned fire on Jake Tapper after criticism from the CNN host. Hannity continued his onslaught by adding Rachel Maddow to his list.

After Tapper referred to the Fox News and nationally syndicated radio host as an “unofficial Trump adviser,” adding that “Hannity is always known for being charitable,” Hannity sounded off by saying that he wouldn’t even respond to Tapper until his CNN ratings were in the same ballpark as Hannity’s.

While speaking with author and Fox News contributor Joe Concha on The Sean Hannity Show Friday, Concha shared that CNN had acted maliciously in airing a report that New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers — who was reportedly under consideration to be Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s running mate on a third-party presidential ticket — had privately shared conspiracy theories that the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Connecticut was a false flag operation enacted by the United States government as a way to restrict gun ownership.

That’s when Hannity remembered his criticism of Jake Tapper, who was hosting on the cable news network when the report dropped. Sean Hannity argued that Tapper, along with other cable news hosts, are dishonest in their approach.

“He’s a perfect example. Or Rachel Maddow, another example. These are people that claim to be journalists and they’re liberal, leftist talk show hosts,” said Hannity. “They’re dishonest about who they are. They claim they’re journalists. They’re anything but journalists. Just own who you are.”

Concha agreed, saying that the network intentionally held the story until it was political advantageous to release it against the NFL star.

Report: Mike Missanelli Could Be Headed Back to 97.5 The Fanatic

As 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia announced changes to its lineup last week, The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported there may be another change ahead. The newspaper reported former host Mike Missanelli could be headed back to the station and has had conversation with station management.

Program Director, Scott Masteller, who took over those duties in January of 2024, told the Inquirer. “Mike’s name has come up. He’s a great talent, and we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. A lot of people are interested in the radio station right now. So I’ll leave it at that.”

Missanelli had been with the station for 15 years before his surprise exit on the final day of May in 2022. At the time, Missanelli said on the air, “The station and I are talking about me remaining with the company in some kind of a role, but who knows. What I can tell you is they already have a replacement show under contract and I’m sure you’ll be hearing about that in the next few days.”

Andrew Salciunas has been moved from middays to mornings to work with John Kincade and Former Philadelphia Daily News writer Bob Cooney has been shifted to the midday slot. Speculation in the market has been Missanelli could jump in with Cooney should he return.

Buck Showalter Returning to MLB Network

Former Mets skipper Buck Showalter is returning to MLB Network as an analyst, the network announced today. Showalter will start work in April once the regular season gets underway.

Showalter previously worked at MLB Network from 2020-21 to provide analysis from a manager’s perspective, something Marchand says the network prefers having. Last year’s managerial analyst, Bo Porter, returned to coaching as first-base coach of the Los Angeles Angels. Now, Showalter returns to fill that vacancy, one he also filled on ESPN and the YES Network in previous stops. He’ll join new MLB Network hire Adam Wainright for the 2024 season.

“I enjoyed my time at MLB Network with people I know and respect, so when this opportunity came up, I couldn’t say no,” said Showalter. “There are many ways to analyze baseball, and I appreciate the different perspectives that come with working at the network. We all bring what we bring and it’s very entertaining. The place is filled with smart, passionate people, who want to teach and grow the game, so I’m excited to be back on the team.”

‘Sports Illustrated’ License Acquired by Minute Media

No need to mourn Sports Illustrated any longer — it’s back under new management. Minute Media, the parent company of other sports media entities like The Player’s Tribune and The Big Lead, reached a deal with SI parent company Authentic Brands Group to resume operations for the legendary sports media entity.

In an article published in The New York Times, Minute Media’s deal with ABG will be for 10 years. It also includes an option to extend for up to 30 years total. This deal will also include the SI Swimsuit Edition, something that was previously believed to be separated from the greater Sports Illustrated brand.

In January, Sports Illustrated’s parent company Authentic Brands Group pulled the SI license from The Arena Group. They were the publishing company that was in charge of SI’s daily operations. In response, Arena laid off SI’s entire staff, capping off SI’s tumultuous era under its former publisher, an era that included potential AI writers, union-busting, and worrying words from its CEO. For now, it seems like the sun has come out — and SI’s Writer’s Union is excited to get started.

“With today’s news that Minute Media will be taking over as publisher of Sports Illustrated, SI’s unionized journalists say they welcome the change and look forward to remaining part of the storied brand’s future,” the SI Union said in a statement posted to its X account.

In December 2023, Sports Illustrated CEO Ross Levinsohn was fired by The Arena Group’s board. The company said the move was to “improve the operational efficiency and revenue of the company.”

Operations President and COO Andrew Kraft, media president Rob Barrett and corporate counsel Julie Fenster were also terminated.

Sports Illustrated has been an influential leader in sports journalism for 70 years. It was developed in 1954 by Time magazine creator Henry Luce.

Elon Musk Wants ‘Prominent Names’ From Both Political Sides for Shows on X

In a highly anticipated interview with Don Lemon that led to the cancellation his the former CNN anchor’s contract with the platform, X owner Elon Musk shared his opinion that the platform is a hub for everyone on the political spectrum.

One of the first topics tackled between Don Lemon and Elon Musk in the one-hour interview was the role X would play in the future of news media and journalism.

Lemon questioned Musk on his intentions after former Fox News host Tucker Carlson — who was ousted on the same day as Don Lemon in 2023 — launched his digital video show on the X platform.

The billionaire said there is enough room on X for someone of Carlson’s ilk and for someone like Don Lemon or Rachel Maddow on the other side of the political aisle to share their opinions as well.

“We want to make sure that there are a wide variety of viewpoints,” Musk said. “We always have. For example, Tucker Carlson, who most people will view as being on the right. That’s quite a prominent name on the right. We want to have prominent names to the left as well, to provide different points of view, as well as centrist. Just, basically, a wide range of viewpoints on the platform, so users can hear different opinions.

“They can hear what’s your point of view, what’s his point of view, and people can make their own decision about what they want to believe.”

Musk comments to Lemon came before he decided to cancel the platform’s contract with the content creator. In response, Lemon claimed “I’ve interviewed many world leaders, presidents to convicts, and no one has been more sensitive or touchy than Elon Musk.”

Don Lemon is shining a light on his interaction with Elon Musk that led to the cancellation of his digital video program for the Musk-owned X social media platform.

Last week, Lemon revealed that Musk would be the first guest on his new program. However, he later shared that Musk canceled the contract for the show after the interview. The billionaire claimed Lemon was being controlled by former CNN CEO Jeff Zucker in a subsequent post to the platform.

In an interview with People magazine on Sunday, Lemon shared his side of the story.

“I went into this with my eyes open. I’ve interviewed many world leaders, presidents to convicts, and no one has been more sensitive or touchy than Elon Musk,” Lemon said. “And during the interview and during other interviews, he constantly says he doesn’t care what people write or say about him. For someone who doesn’t care about what people write or say about him, he sure does care about what people write or say about him.”

Don Lemon continued by sharing his hypothesis that Musk simply isn’t used to being held accountable for his words or actions.

“He’s not used to having to answer to anyone, especially someone like me who doesn’t share his worldview, who doesn’t look like him. You know what I’m saying? When I questioned him about things that he put out on social media, posted or tweeted, that weren’t factual, it was very uncomfortable for him,” Lemon revealed. “To the point where [he and his team] wanted to see the interview before it aired. Which was a big capital N no.”
