Charlie Kirk: Why Did It Take 42 Minutes for Hugh Hewitt to Ask a Debate Question?

0

The third 2024 Republican Presidential primary debate was held Wednesday evening. The debate was presented by both NBC News and Salem Radio Network. Hugh Hewitt represented the radio group, and Charlie Kirk praised his performance.

“We’re going to stay on China and specifically about TikTok,” Hewitt began his question Wednesday. “Last week, Congressman Mike Johnson, who is chairman of the House bi-partisan select committee on the Chinese Communist Party published a long essay on TikTok following the flooding of pro-Hamas propaganda on TikTok accounts across the United States.

“Chairman Gallagher called it ‘shocking’. He called the app ‘predatory’ and ‘controlled by America’s preeminent adversary’, ‘one used to push propaganda and divide America. It’s spyware’. Governor (Chris) Christie, do you agree with Chairman Gallagher?”

On social media, Charlie Kirk praised the question from Hewitt.

“Great question on banning TikTok from Hugh Hewitt from Salem,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “This is exactly the type of question that base conservative voters care about.”

Kirk’s comments came after he questioned why Hewitt wasn’t allowed to ask a question during the debate televised by NBC News until more than 40 minutes into the event.

“Why did it take 42 (minutes) for Salem’s Hugh Hewitt — the only conservative moderator — to get his first question in?,” Kirk asked.

Jason Kelce Joining ‘Thursday Night Football’ as Guest Analyst

With the Philadelphia Eagles in the midst of their bye week following an 8-1 start to the National Football League regular season, star center Jason Kelce will be joining the Thursday Night Football broadcast booth on Amazon Prime Video as a guest analyst. Kelce, who also hosts the New Heights podcast with Wave Sports + Entertainment alongside his brother, Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce, will be featured in the booth with play-by-play announcer Al Michaels and color commentator Kirk Herbstreit throughout the contest between the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers.

Before the live game broadcast, he will be on the TNF Tonight pregame show hosted by Charissa Thompson, and he will remain on the air for TNF Nightcap following the action. Kelce will also participate in a sit-down interview with feature reporter Taylor Rooks prior to the game.

Earlier in the season, Kelce made a viral moment when he was asked by analyst and former NFL tight end Tony Gonzalez about the veracity of rumors that his brother, Travis, was in a relationship with singer and songwriter Taylor Swift. He is now set to join the broadcast in the midst of his 13th season in the NFL and after deciding to return to the league rather than retiring.

“Amazon bought the Kelce documentary, and we were talking when that whole thing was going down about maybe getting out during the bye week to the Thursday night game,” Kelce said on Wednesday’s edition of the New Heights podcast regarding his guest appearance. “I’m going to have a lot of fun with all those guys, man…. It’s going to be a good time. I can’t wait.”

Coverage of Thursday Night Football begins with TNF Tonight at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST streaming on Prime Video. The game broadcast with Michaels and Herbstreit in the booth, along with sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung on the field, begins ahead of the scheduled 8:15 p.m. EST/5:15 p.m. PST kickoff from Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill.

NewsNation has announced it will host the fourth 2024 Republican Presidential primary debate next month.

On Wednesday, December 6th, candidates will gather at the University of Alabama’s Frank Moody Music Building in Tuscaloosa for the fourth debate, which will be broadcast from 8-10 PM ET.

In addition to airing on the cable network, the event will also be aired nationally on The CW, with affiliates in the Mountain and Pacific time zones seeing an encore presentation in primetime. The debate will also be broadcast on SiriusXM Triumph channel 111.

The debate will be moderated by SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly, NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas, and The Washington Free Beacon’s Eliana Johnson. Kelly previously moderated a Presidential debate in 2016, which remains the most-watched debate on record.

“NewsNation’s mission is to provide fair and unbiased news coverage, and that’s the way we will approach this important debate,” said network President of News Michael Corn. “We take this responsibility very seriously and are proud to help inform and educate voters and to contribute to the democratic process.”

The move isn’t the first foray into the 2024 Republican Presidential race for the cable network. It has previously hosted town hall events with candidates Mike Pence and Vivek Ramaswamy.

Vince Marotta: Dave Pasch Has My Dream Job

0

Arizona Sports host Vince Marotta envies how busy announcer Dave Pasch is this time of year.

Pasch is the radio play-by-play voice of the Arizona Cardinals during football season, but Pasch also calls NBA and college basketball for ESPN where he’s worked the last 20 years.

On Bickley & Marotta on Tuesday, Marotta said Pasch has to be racking up the airline miles constantly being on assignments.

“We don’t talk enough about Dave Pasch’s schedule,” Marotta said.

“When you’re very talented you have options,” co-host Dan Bickley responded.

Marotta, while he has no intentions of leaving his current post at Arizona Sports, did admit he lives vicariously through Pasch.

“He pretty much has my dream job,” he said before being asked to clarify which job in particular. “The whole combo platter of all of it.”

Vince Marotta was asked if he would really be happy having to constantly be on the road traveling. But Marotta said he did some extensive travel when doing play-by-play earlier in his career. But that was a different time.

“I was a much younger man at that point,” he said. “But it was rough, though, cause it was the side job. I was doing another job at the time and then having to do the prep. If that was your full job, it was just all day getting ready for broadcasts, sign me up.”

Nexstar CEO: Demand for TV Reach Never Been Greater for Pro Sports Teams

0

Nexstar Media Group has been active in pursuing rights to live sports for The CW in recent months, and that is by design.

Even with the rise of cord cutting, there’s still a demand for linear TV, and Nexstar is taking advantage of the opportunity to be a player in the live sports space.

In the company’s third quarter earnings call on Tuesday, Nexstar president and COO Michael Biard said recent deals for rights leagues like the ACC and LIV Golf are important in Nexstar’s efforts to make The CW more attractive to advertisers. It’s working, as evidenced by new deals recently announced.

“That demand for broadcast television has allowed us to enter into exclusive agreements with a number of major sports organizations, including our just-announced deal for WWE NXT in 2024; LIV Golf, which will return in 2024; ACC football and basketball, and NASCAR starting in 2025,” Biard said.

CEO Perry Sook said the agreements to add live sports to local CW affiliates will only help those stations from an advertising revenue perspective.

“We believe these are important assets and value-creating assets for the network,” he said. “I can tell you when we brought LIV Golf on, the local stations hit that hard and had great success this past summer and fall, monetizing that at the local level.”

Nexstar has also been keeping an eye on the ongoing Diamond Sports Group bankruptcy and the willingness by affected teams to look to broadcast TV to fill the gap.

“[The NBA] carved out a 10-game package for broadcast. That was a telling little tidbit inside that deal,” Biard said referencing the deals done with the Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs. “And what we’re seeing is evidence — both at the national level with the deals being done, and at the team level with the local deals being done — that the search for reach that only broadcast can deliver is really ubiquitous and applies at all levels right now.”

NHL Network Adding Cory Schneider, Alexa Landestoy to On-Air Lineup

0

NHL Network is debuting new talent added to its on-air lineup.

Alexa Landestoy began hosting On The Fly on Tuesday night, while 13-year NHL goaltender Cory Schneider will make his first of several regular appearances across NHL Network programming tonight on NHL Tonight.

Landestoy has contributed to Emmy-winning coverage of the Washington Capitals for NBC Sports Washington/Monumental Sports Network for the last four seasons.

“I’ve seen first-hand how special the NHL is from covering the Washington Capitals and now I couldn’t be more excited to add to my role and cover the league as a whole!” Landestoy said. “I’m a fan at heart and can’t wait to get to work!”

Schneider started the season as a guest analyst before transitioning into his new role. As a goalie, Schneider recorded 171 wins and a .918 save percentage. He won the William M. Jennings Trophy in 2011 for fewest goals allowed and was an all-star in 2016. He retired in September after stints with the New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils and Vancouver Canucks.

NHL Network vice president of production Josh Bernstein said adding Landestoy and Schneider in addition to Brian Boyle, Thomas Hickey, and Bruce Boudreau allows for some versatility in analysis and perspective.

“We’re always looking for fresh energy and new perspectives, so it’s a thrill to bring Cory and
Alexa to the team,” he said. “You can never have enough goalie insight, and the fact that we’re able to add Cory’s astute knowledge to the mix is a perfect fit for us. And having Alexa part of On The Fly, one of our most important programs, is a fantastic addition. She’s going to fit right in and be able to deliver the night’s best action in an entertaining and informative way.”

How to Follow the Radio Ratings Data to News/Talk Success

0

How many times a week are your listeners tuning into your radio show? How many minutes are they staying per occasion? Do you know?

The data is important for your show’s health and growth. I am in a diary market, and the Time Spent Listening tends to be more than in a PPM Market. The Tune-Ins tend to be less in a diary market as well. You have one job: keep that listener as long as possible.

While both methodologies have flaws, it is what we have to work with and use. Blaming your bad monthly or quarterly report on the methodology is like a football coach scapegoating the 30-point loss on the referees. It is an excuse. I don’t like excuses. So, we are stuck with this.  Use the data to your advantage. Maximize this process to your advantage.

You need a reality check. Ask your PD/Brand Manager for the data. This is the game that we play every day. You have one job: to provide a listener-focused experience to your audience. If you don’t know the data, get it. Don’t live in ignorance. You can maximize your footprint in their brains.

PPM has one thing that every radio professional should believe. Your listeners are likely tuning in every minute of every hour. The diary is a recall exercise. The process of sweeping the corners is a diary anachronism that still haunts PPM markets. Sweeping the corners is as obsolete as the rotary telephone. It gives zero ratings advantages.

You do not get credit for any listening less than five minutes at a time. PPM has taught us that almost every listener starts tuning into different stations during every commercial break. It is a fact.

Now, how do you counteract this truth? Teases. Solid teases at that. “More on the way” won’t do it. Content-rich teases will force your audience to stay through the commercial break.   Another solution? Entertaining and compelling live commercials. Tying the events of the day into your live spots provides a certain entertainment to remain listening to the show.

Hey, Market Managers! You can help your station’s bottom line plus improve ratings by selling lots of live spots for your team. Your host is an influencer. People love them. Audience members will buy things because of the words of your host. Maximize this.

Getting five more minutes. This is your job. You have a wonderful group of humans listening to your amazing show. Get five more minutes. Another strategy? Benchmarks. Traffic and weather together are a tune-in factor. Special moments on your show are a reason for tuning into your show.

Here is something that I do successfully: my station does a Big 3 at quarter-hour breaks. The first Big 3 at 6:18 AM features a cold read from one of my news guys. I go out of my way to add unusual words to throw him off. What I hear from listeners is they love it. They tune in early to hear if there is a word that the news guy can’t pronounce. The news guy is a good sport. I hand him the copy the moment that he is to start reading it. It’s totally unique. It allows the news guy to be human, real, and relatable. It also allows him to become a sympathetic figure that the audience actually cheers for.

Your Benchmark is as unique as you are. Find something that anyone can relate to that is connected to your show. Perhaps you have a producer who can be a part of the fun. Make it real and your special moment. If you are not the master of hijinks, your news anchor, producer or perhaps someone in the building could be that for your show!

Your point of view is one of the secret sauces to your success. It is the thinking that allows you to reach your conclusion that is the real selling point. If your thought process does not come with a predicted conclusion, you have won. Be consistent with being true to yourself. Your audience will be surprised and lean into your thinking. I have listened to many hosts who believe that they must form a certain opinion on a subject. You must be true to your passions and your views. It is risky but creates an unpredictability that makes you compelling and a must-listen.

If you have been presenting your show in the same way for years, question yourself. I am not saying that you are wrong, but you cannot lie to yourself. If you use the tools that I have highlighted, you will be closer to a listener-focused experience that will make you essential to your listeners. Questioning the way that you create your show will allow you to grow. Growth creates innovation.

Analyze how you can grow Time Spent Listening. The data is your path to victory. Don’t run from data, cherish it. Data is the scientific way to monitor your show.  Learn from your Brand Manager/Program Director. Listen. Your leader is desperate for your show to grow. Your leader wants you to win.

Wright State University men’s basketball has its radio home for the 2023-24 season on 101.5 Hank FM and 1410 WING AM.

The university’s athletics department on Tuesday announced that it had reached an agreement with Alpha Media Dayton to air Raiders games on the two stations.

“We are excited about our new partnership with 101.5 HANK FM and 1410 WING ESPN Radio to provide Wright State Men’s Basketball games throughout the 2023-24 season,” Wright State senior associate athletic director for external operations Padraic McMeel said. “This partnership enhances the radio experience for our fans to enjoy the games on two stations as well as providing multiple advertising opportunities.”

Hank FM will be the main play-by-play home for games and will air the weekly Basketball Coaches Show on Mondays from 6-7 p.m. The station can be found on the iHeart, TuneIn Radio and Audacy apps.

The school said a majority of Raiders games will air on 1410 WING.

Wright State begins its new season on Friday night against Colorado State.

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman Are Team Players for Pitching Manningcast

0

These are strange times we’re living in as sports fans. Monopolies have taken over the major sports networks. Some companies own multiple outlets and the look and feel of those broadcasts is the same. Music, graphics, and flow seem consistent across the platforms. Some broadcasters are the face of their network, while others like ESPN use specific voices for specific packages, like Joe Buck and Troy Aikman for Monday Night Football.

Now, many of those networks are going to the “alternate broadcasts that try to cater to specific audiences, like gamblers and folks who just don’t care that much about the game and want to be entertained.

It’s great when FOX or ESPN can provide coverage of so many different sporting events. It gives the sports fan a chance to see games and events they are truly interested in and want to view. But that creation creates issues from time to time. Like having high-priced talent, brought in to increase viewership, promoting another program, and running at the same time, on a different entity of the network.

ESPN airs its Monday Night Football package on the World Wide Leader and ABC. The broadcast features Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, two announcers poached from FOX a couple of years ago. Bringing the popular duo in, cost the network dearly, to the tune of 165 million dollars. They were brought in to restore the importance of the brand. Monday Night Football interest had been waning in recent years and Buck and Aikman bring credibility to the product.

Even with that major investment, ESPN is forcing the MNF booth to promote the “other” venture, which airs on ESPN 2, The Manningcast. The show hosted by Peyton and Eli Manning runs concurrently against several MNF games, offering an alternative to the actual game.

The Manningcast airs only on a few selected weeks of the season, and when it’s on, Buck and Aikman promote it, on air. It’s strange and I imagine not easy to handle for the broadcast crew. They are pros and handle it as such, but you can kind of tell, they resent it just a little bit.

Here’s an example from a few weeks ago, during the game between the Seahawks and Giants, Buck read the promo for the alternate broadcast. That particular week, the Manning’s had Will Ferrell on as a guest.

Buck started to read the promo as scripted, but then, even with producers urging him to send viewers elsewhere, he managed to make it less weird. Buck read the promo and slipped in a classic Will Ferrell line, saying “Stay classy, Troy.” An unforgettable line from Anchorman, minus the Troy part of course. Aikman seemed frustrated with the idea of telling people to go elsewhere. He responded, “Well, stay here folks! Stay classy and stay here!” Aikman then followed it up with, “I like Will Ferrell … but sit tight.”

Awkward to say the least.

I get the hesitancy of the broadcaster to alert viewers of another broadcast. We are always territorial when it comes to projects, broadcasts, and telecasts we work on. It’s only natural. Even though my situation as a sportscaster at WGN Radio is a little different than the one Buck and Aikman face, I understand the issue.

When I do a sports update on the air, I don’t give tip times for Bulls games. Why? Because they air on another station. Same story when it comes to baseball. I only say that the Cubs or White Sox are playing that day or night. I don’t offer a first-pitch time. Both teams are on competing stations. I feel like, why should I urge fans to leave my station and go to the other for the games?

Obviously, hardcore fans are going to know where to go to get their game, without me having to tell them. They also know when their teams are playing. I don’t feel like it’s my job to drive listenership away from WGN to listen to a game on another station. That’s for them to worry about. I promote our partners, the Blackhawks, and Northwestern football and basketball, as I should. I know it’s a little nit-picky, but I’ve always believed that you shouldn’t give a listener a reminder to leave!

On the one hand, I understand the request of the broadcasters. It’s a network thing, not a booth thing. But on the other hand, why would you ask Buck and Aikman, who you paid out the keester for, to promote a broadcast other than their own? Isn’t there another way to accomplish the plug? Maybe using a graphic or a crawl across the bottom of the screen?

There has to be something that the producers at ESPN can come up with, to alleviate Buck and Aikman from having to read the promo. I get it, it’s only one read and one promo. But, as MNF tries to restore itself to its glory days — I wish them the best in that endeavor — they need all the viewers they can get. The Manningcast started off hot, but has cooled a bit recently. It probably needs the boost it may get from the guys mentioning it on the broadcast. ESPN considers that a win-win.

I think Buck and Aikman handled it about as well as they could be expected to under the circumstances. It’s not an easy ask, I’m sure, from the producer’s point of view either. But it needs to be done. If the boss says read it, even those making the big bucks, need to promote the other product. Just like in any broadcast, there are sponsored elements that I’m sure most of us could do without. They make money for the team or station you’re working for, so there isn’t much of a debate when it comes down to it.

The Bears postgame show I’m hosting right now, has seven different elements to cover, in two hours. Factoring in, my co-host’s analysis and fan’s phone calls, it’s not easy, but we do it and have some fun along the way. Granted, we aren’t promoting events that compete with our own product, but the end game is the same. Do your job and honor your obligation to read the promo, but poke a little fun and levity as you can without being out of line.

I could tell there was some uneasiness in the process of trying to land the movie line between Buck and Aikman. Neither broadcaster seemed completely comfortable in promoting Peyton and Eli while their telecast was being presented at the same time. Being professionals, they took care of what they needed to and it was over. It’s a good lesson to learn and sometimes having to be a ‘team player’ is more important than making a stand.

ESPN 94.1 and FOX Sports Texarkana Cease Operations

0

Six radio stations that are owned by Freed AM Corp. and MLS Broadcasting in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas have ceased their operations. According to a statement within an FCC filing, “The licensee is suspending operations of this station for financial reasons.”

The move shutters ESPN 94.1 KTRG-FM in Hooks, Texas, along with FOX Sports Texarkana 1400 KKTK and 97.1 K246CR in Texarkana, Texas. In addition to the closure of the sports stations, three music outlets and a talk station have also shut their doors.

Robert Del Giorno, who owns Free AM Corp., also hosted a regionally-syndicated program titled Texas Sports Talk at KKTK. The future of that program is unknown after the announcement of the decision to shut down the outlets.
