SiriusXM Unveils Its Vision for the Future of Audio Content

0

When Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo floated the possibility of retiring if the Arizona Diamondbacks won the National League Championship Series down three games to two, many listeners were curious to see if he’d follow through on his promise. After the team pulled off the impressive feat, Russo appeared on The Howard Stern Show on SiriusXM to discuss a suitable alternative punishment. Mad Dog wasn’t interested in stepping away from the radio business so Stern devised a plan of public humiliation that Russo reluctantly agreed to.

The collaboration and cross-genre integration embedded within SiriusXM has made it a destination for consumers interested in a variety of different topics. Moreover, it has been through the deft capabilities and talent embedded within the brand that has rendered it one of the most venerated in all of media.

Capitalizing off of the star power of SiriusXM, along with its utilization of satellites within the cosmos to connect to listeners all over the globe, the media conglomerate revealed its new brand identity and application, which will be available on the market starting on December 14. The brand also revealed a $9.99 package that will grant users full access to its application, which features unique, alluring content from various different genres.

“You get everything,” SiriusXM Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Witz told Barrett Sports Media, “and we have a really compelling product on the music side. Sports is something where, we obviously have all of the games in one place, which is highly unusual, certainly on the video side, and we also have a ton of commentary and everything else.”

As it pertains to sports, SiriusXM has a wide variety of live game play-by-play rights, along with daily programming from dedicated channels tailored to different kinds of sports fans. For example, Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo anchors afternoons on Mad Dog Sports Radio, while SiriusXM MLB Network Radio keeps baseball fans up to date on all the latest news and opinions around the league.

These outlets encompass just some of the content that will be accessible to consumers, but a point of differentiation is the capability of learning individual listening habits. From that data, the platform will utilize artificial intelligence and other machine learning to suggest content that can add to the overall listening experience.

“We’re going to try to put together an audio DNA recommendation for you where you’re going to be in a position to hopefully get things that matter to you,” Scott Greenstein, president and chief content officer of SiriusXM, told Barrett Sports Media, “and as you use them, we’re going to be better at it.”

The average American consumer listens to, on average, four hours and 11 minutes of audio content per day, with nearly two-and-a-half hours spent listening at home. For SiriusXM, fostering a connection with the listeners and cultivating a sense of community is critical within a media ecosystem that has no shortage of consumption choices over which people can deliberate. Even with the augmented user control, the platform has a low churn rate and an overall core audience and growth audience opportunity that, when combined, account for 84% of total audio spend.

SiriusXM took part in a new brand exercise that clearly defines the identity of its brand built upon enhancing the listener experience and providing users with an incentive to come back and continue listening. With its new logo, it aims to maintain its ability to bring listeners closer to the hosts, artists and brands towards which they have an affinity. Many of the stars throughout the company’s lineup were on hand for the event, including Howard Stern, Kelly Clarkson, Kevin Hart and Conan O’Brien, and there were several announcements made about new content in the music and talk spaces.

“There’s enough content there – good content – that our subscribers feel fulfilled,” Stern said. “To me, SiriusXM was an oasis in a desert of censorship. The technology I dreamed of; the freedom I dreamed of. [SiriusXM] really met all of my expectations.”

SiriusXM App – Sports

The new application will streamline processes for sports fans, amalgamating different aspects of the consumption experience that would ordinarily require multiple platforms to successfully execute. Fans of specific sports teams, such as the New York Giants, will be able to access a dedicated landing page with all of the pertinent news and information about the team. Additionally, the area will implement live game broadcasts and recommended programming.

These functionalities will be synced across different platforms utilizing valid login credentials, including in-car capabilities. Sports fans will also be able to contribute to polls in real time in select vehicles and select home or away feeds on game broadcasts with ease.

Sports talk and podcasting content is specifically focused on the national audience with the satellite-based platform, with offerings from established voices including Tom Brady, LaChina Robinson, Adam Schein, Larry Fitzgerald and, of course, the aforementioned Russo. The platform will continue to superserve the fan as it sees fit, revealing new avenues for people to interact with the content they value and find salient.

“It’s not just enough to have those voices – how do I educate people as to [the fact that] those voices are available to them and really create that fandom and bring people along,” Joe Inzerillo, chief product and technology officer at SiriusXM, told Barrett Sports Media. “So I think you have to have the top stars to legitimize it so people understand that this is credible, this is a real source [and that] this isn’t a fly-by-night company.”

The landscape of sports talk radio is in the midst of a paradigmatic shift as it remains committed to content that is accessible and relatable for listeners through various dayparts. Some platforms are remaining on the terrestrial dial, reaffirming their commitment to the embedded audience, while also exploring other means of distribution in the digital space. Other brands, such as ESPN New York, are planning to forgo the FM dial entirely and repositioning its operations to serve AM radio and digital platforms.

Although the MSG Radio Network will remain on ESPN New York for the foreseeable future, there are other professional teams within the ESPN New York portfolio and around the country that could soon be moved off of FM radio and may have an interest in continuing to serve the over-the-air audience. In viewing the media landscape, there is a chance that SiriusXM and satellite radio in general could play a role in keeping live game broadcasts on the airwaves and rendering them available through multiple means of dissemination.

“We view local sports content as national because for every local fan, there was a local fan who now moved away and wishes they could have it exactly as it is,” Greenstein said. “I, personally, would love to have some teams exclusively with SiriusXM so local fans can listen on SiriusXM and fans all over the country can hear their favorite team with their favorite announcer, just the way they grew up with it.”

At the same time, SiriusXM knows that the emphasis on national content in the sports media space serves a specific sector of its audience, but is keenly aware of sports radio brands that are hyper-focused on local subsets of fans. In order to create a more localized content offering, the brand would need to focus on becoming more regionalized and capitalizing on potential chances for sustained growth within the marketplace. When Inzerillo was previously working as the chief technology officer for Major League Baseball, he found that roughly half of fans were located in the same city of the team they rooted for while the other half were displaced and cared more about national coverage.

“When you look at numbers like that, you sort of have to have both,” Inzerillo said. “Without making any announcements, it’s certainly something we’re aware of that if there was going to be an alternative to the local market stuff, it would have to still continue to be local.”

Various other platforms have incorporated current athletes and provided them platforms to share their viewpoints and opinions about the sports world at large. The Volume utilizes Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green for a podcast, while Wave Sports + Entertainment features brothers and NFL stars Jason and Travis Kelce on their own show. SiriusXM knows the impact this type of content, colloquially referred to as the “new media” movement, can have and how it resonates with audiences. While it has explored content in this regard in the past, it also wants to remain staunchly focused on regularly serving its audience.

“We require a meaningful commitment to what we do on the air, so it’s a little harder with current [players], and we like regularity,” Greenstein said. “We want our hosts and our listeners to feel there’s a community and they’re a part of that. We’ve done it – we’ve done it in golf and other places – but we want to make sure the commitment is there, and when it is, we sign them and we have.”

SiriusXM is gearing itself to remain a viable part of the media landscape in the future, both adapting to the changing marketplace and innovating to demonstrate a wherewithal for being able to meet the moment. The new brand identity and concomitant application brings more discretion and power to the consumers, something the company hopes will bolster subscriptions and provide an aggregate return on investment both in the present moment and posterity. While SiriusXM did not invent the concept of radio, it has and continues to imagine what the medium can be and is looking forward to further extend and reach its possibilities.

“I think it definitely will appeal to sports enthusiasts, but it’s really for the audience that really wants everything in audio in one place to be able to come in,” Witz said. “We’re providing a better opportunity to help them navigate that.”

Steak Shapiro: Peyton and Eli Manning Have Qualities Every Sports Radio Host Needs

0

The Manningcast has long been lauded as one of the best sports media innovations in recent years. 92.9 The Game’s Steak Shapiro agrees but says Peyton and Eli Manning possess a quality sports radio hosts need, too.

During The Steakhouse, Shapiro said its admirable the pair have the ability to poke fun at themselves, which is a requirement in his eyes for sports radio hosts.

“I really haven’t hired a lot of people in sports radio, sports media and been around a lot of folks like their chemistry, their humor. I can never hang out with a dude or listen to a guy on the radio if they don’t know how to make fun of themselves or aren’t self-deprecating, or have humility,” Shapiro said. “I mean, Peyton Manning is a top-five quarterback in history. Eli Manning has two Super Bowls against Tom Brady. Those two bust each other’s chops!”

Steak Shapiro continued his praise of the Mannings, saying that it’s the optimal way to watch Monday Night Football.

“They’re so freaking funny. I know we go on and on about them, but I just think that it’s just so unique that those guys can be that entertaining that could have what they do, which is a football,” concluded Shapiro.

ESPN Being Eyed by NFL, NBA for Equity Stake

0

As The Walt Disney Company explores potential partners for an equity stake in ESPN, the NFL and NBA continue to be listed as potential suitors.

According to a report from Front Office Sports, both leagues are involved in exploring taking a stake in the television company. Like ESPN, the NFL has been in search of a partner for NFL Media for the past two years. In a similar situation to ESPN, the NFL would like to maintain a majority of the company while selling minor shares of the organization to investors.

Late last month, The New York Times reported that Disney executives had made overtures to the NBA about an equity stake in the company, claiming “the benefits sought by ESPN in a partnership could include more closely integrating a league’s social media operations with the network’s, content like documentary rights and more in-game audio from players, distributing games it does not have the broadcast rights to within its apps and working together on marketing.”

A potential sales price of ESPN was tagged at around $24 billion last week by Bank of America Global Research.

Media analyst Jessica Reif Cohen has previously stated that the potential partners for ESPN fall into three categories: professional sports leagues, technology (Apple, Amazon, Google/YouTube), and distribution (Comcast/Verizon).

Al Michaels Plans to Return to Thursday Night Football in 2024

0

Thursday Night Football play-by-play voice Al Michaels has been the subject of ongoing criticism for a perceived lack of enthusiasm during the Amazon Prime Video package. However, he has no plans of stepping aside anytime soon.

In a conversation with the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand, Michaels said that he still has one year remaining on his contract with Prime Video, and he intends to honor it.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m doing next year,” Michaels said. “There’s no question about that in my mind.”

When prodded on whether or not he’s interested in a retirement tour, the legendary broadcast shut down any notion that he would want a farewell parade.

“Look when I’m done. It’s the way John Madden was done. Two words and a contraction: ‘It’s time.’ I don’t need any parade or that nonsense,” Michaels concluded.

Michaels has faced scrutiny for his less-than-enthusiastic calls this season, mimicking some of the same criticism he faced a year ago after denigrating the package’s schedule. However, this week’s matchup — featuring the 2-7 Chicago Bears taking on the 1-7 Carolina Panthers — is likely to bring up similar feelings for Michaels.

Angelo Cataldi: I Had to Rediscover My Identity After Leaving 94 WIP

0

Legendary 94 WIP morning host Angelo Cataldi returned to the Philadelphia sports station Wednesday morning for the first time and was open and honest about his life after stepping away earlier this year.

Cataldi joined Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie for the entire 9 AM hour Wednesday as part of his promotion for his upcoming book.

The longtime morning host was asked by DeCamara if he was happy in retirement, but Cataldi couldn’t answer with a resounding yes.

“That would be a stretch because I’ve never been happy and I’m not going to start now,” Cataldi admitted. “The first two months was bliss.”

Angelo Cataldi then joked that he had to work tirelessly on his book, because he was afraid that if he didn’t get the publication out the same year he retired “no one will remember who the hell I was”. He added that he wrote 2,500 words per day for seven straight weeks to get the book done.

However, completing the book was a double-edged sword, according to the former host.

“I had a rough few months because then my life was purposeless,” Cataldi revealed. “I sought the relief of a therapist. I brought him into my life. This is what was really interesting because, Jon, you dealt with this. You’re a serious football player for the first half of your life. And then, boom, it’s over, right? What’s your identity? And you have that period where you don’t know who you are. You go ‘Oh, what do I do now?’

“I have finally learned how to relax and how to embrace a life without so much stress,” continued Cataldi. “And that is cool. It takes a while to get used to it. But I went to a period where I couldn’t sleep for a couple of weeks. I woke up at exactly three o’clock every day and started to plan the show. And then said, Wow, maybe I should just send these notes to DeCamara, he’s actually doing it.”

Mike Gallagher to Host 2-Hour Special After Republican Debate

0

Salem Radio Network host Mike Gallagher will host a two-hour special broadcast after the network’s involvement in the third 2024 Republican Presidential primary debate Wednesday.

Salem is partnering with NBC News for coverage of the third debate, which will take place tonight from Miami.

The network’s Hugh Hewitt will be one of three moderators for the event. He’ll be joined by NBC News anchors Kristen Welker and Lester Holt.

Gallagher hosted his nationally syndicated radio show from the “spin room” at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County Wednesday. He’ll host the special broadcast from the same location, which will also air on Salem News Channel.

Salem’s partnership with NBC News has come under scrutiny from some media members, who accosted the network for partnering with the conservative radio group. Former cable news host Keith Olbermann took issue with the pairing, arguing that MSNBC host Rachel Maddow should lead a protest against the partnership.

Jason Rantz: CNN Has Completely Shifted Position on Israel/Hamas Conflict

0

As the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel continues, news coverage continues to evolve. However, 770 KTTH host Jason Rantz doesn’t appreciate the way the coverage has changed on CNN.

During The Jason Rantz Show, the Seattle host argued that CNN has changed its position to be more closely aligned with MSNBC.

“They started off covering Israel versus Hamas, I thought, effectively. I thought that they were honest. I thought that they were fair, I thought that they told stories that needed to be told, and they did it in an effective way early on. 100%,” Rantz said. “I’m not a fan of CNN, I don’t like their people for the most part, but I give credit where credit’s due I thought they did really good work. But then you could start to tell that they were shifting the way that they were talking about this war against a terrorist organization.

“They recognize that some people within their base of viewers — the very, very far-left radicals, the hardcore progressives — they don’t support Israel,” continued Rantz. “And if you want to keep them watching, if you’re CNN, you look at the threat of that individual going to MSNBC — which has been pro-Hamas from the beginning — you’re gonna say ‘Okay, maybe we got to mix up some of our coverage. We can’t be so fair to Israel. We’re gonna have to allow at least some of the voices on our network to start attacking. To start questioning.'”

Jason Rantz then shared his displeasure with the network allowing Georgia State Rep. Ruwa Romman (D) on the air to claim that she doesn’t trust messaging presented by the Jewish state.

Brandon Tierney Signs Extension with WFAN

0

WFAN midday host Brandon Tierney has announced he has inked an extension to remain with the Audacy-owned station.

“Happy to announce: pen to paper/extension at WFAN officially complete,” Tierney wrote in a post to X, formerly Twitter, Wednesday. “Fired up to continue building our show with my/our core principles: passion, rawness, unpredictability, transparency, a little nuttiness, and always the truest representation of you…the FAN!”

Tierney shifted to WFAN with co-host Tiki Barber from CBS Sports Radio in 2022 after spending eight years together in national syndication.

Tierney and Barber split up earlier this year after the high-profile exit of afternoon host Craig Carton. Tierney stayed in middays with new partner Sal Licata, while Tiki Barber was paired with existing afternoon co-host Evan Roberts.

In the latest ratings period, the pairing of Tierney and Licata garnered a 6.7 share, good for 2nd in the coveted Men 25-54 demographic.

Jeff Zucker: ‘We Would Look At It’ If CNN Were For Sale

0

Former CNN President Jeff Zucker has been frequently linked as a potential buyer of CNN should Warner Bros. Discovery decide to sell the cable network. He admitted that he would be interested in looking at an acquisition.

While appearing at the Yahoo Finance Invest Conference, Zucker shared that while CNN is “not for sale” and that his RedBird IMI capital firm wasn’t currently investigating a purchase, he called the network a “fantastic asset”.

“Some day if it were available, like any other great asset, we would look at it,” Zucker said. “That’s not to say yes or no, it’s just to say it’s a great asset and if the time came, we would look at it.”

Jeff Zucker served as President of CNN from 2013 until 2022 when he resigned after an affair with a colleague was unearthed.

Earlier this year, a report from TheWrap labeled Zucker as “desperate” to purchase CNN. However, Zucker reportedly asked for a retraction from the outlet, with confidants calling Zucker “more baffled than angry” about the encapsulation.

Additionally, the New York Post claimed Zucker was likely to place a bid to purchase the struggling cable news giant this fall. However, no such bid has taken place.

NAB Pushes Back on Automaker Estimates on Cost to Keep AM Radio

0

A report from the Alliance for Automotive Innovation claims the cost for auto manufacturers to keep AM Radio in the dashboard of electric vehicles is just under $4 billion. The NAB has balked at that figure.

Alliance for Automotive Innovation President John Bozzella called AM Radio “not popular with customers and now we know: not cheap” after estimates that electric vehicle manufacturers could see costs of up to $3.8 billion by 2030 to keep the band in the dashboard.

The costs to keep AM Radio in EVs come from shielding cables and interference filters that are required to mitigate electromagnetic interference. The estimates put the cost per vehicle at between $40-$70 for those components.

“These costs can be avoided by deleting analog AM radio from vehicles and providing consumers with alternative products for in-vehicle audio content,” a report from the Center for Automotive Research claims.

Bozella continued by saying AM Radio is irrelevant in emergency situations, pointing to a survey that claimed 95% of Americans received the October nationwide EAS test on their phones, rather than via AM/FM Radio.

The study comes after the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act received widespread Congressional support.

In response, the NAB is pushing back on the claim that costs to automakers would be near $4 billion, pointing to data from the Congressional Budget Office that estimates the cost as closer to $198 million in 2023.

“Hundreds of thousands of Americans have voiced their support to their lawmakers for keeping AM radio in the vehicle because they understand the critical role local AM stations play during emergencies – not just when the initial alert goes out but until the danger has passed,” NAB spokesman Alex Siciliano said.
