Anatomy of an Analyst: Kirk Herbstreit

Kirk Herbstreit is one of the most recognizable college football analysts in the game. Herbstreit is the game analyst for ABC Saturday Night Football, he’s been there since its debut in 2006.

Currently, Herbstreit is paired with announcer Chris Fowler, but at the beginning, he shared the booth with the legendary Brent Musburger. Herbstreit has been a mainstay on the College GameDay show on ESPN since 1996 as well.

But a year or so ago, Kirk Herbstreit became even more visible in NFL circles. Even after he and Fowler added some NFL games to their resumes for ABC/ESPN, Herbstreit’s role in the NFL recently increased in a big way last year when he was tabbed to analyze Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime Video.

Kirk Herbstreit built up his credibility in the college football world, by actually playing it at a high level. He was a four-year letterman at Ohio State and the first signee of former coach John Cooper. He was a quarterback on the Buckeyes team from 1989-1992. Herbstreit had to wait his turn, but when it finally came, he took advantage.

During his senior season in 1992, he served as a starter and team captain, and was recognized as team MVP and most motivational player. Herbstreit passed for nearly 2,000 yards that season and led the Buckeyes to a bowl game. They would lose the Citrus Bowl to Georgia.

ROAD TO SATURDAY NIGHT COLLEGE FOOTBALL/THURSDAY NIGHT NFL

Kirk Herbstreit initially broke into the sports media field by hosting local sports talk radio shows in the Columbus area. In 1995, Herbstreit joined ESPN as a college football sideline analyst. Then just a year later he started appearing on College GameDay. Receiving many accolades for his work on the show, he got a chance to get into the booth in 1999. That’s when he joined the network’s Thursday night college football broadcast, calling games with Mike Tirico.

Then in 2006, Herbstreit started working Saturday Night Football on ABC. He called eight Rose Bowl Games and seven BCS National Championships alongside legendary play-by-play announcer Brent Musburger. He now works the Saturday games with Chris Fowler where the two have teamed up to work a College Football Playoff Semifinal game and the College Football National Championship. They both added NFL duties to their resumes during the 2020 season.

Last March, Herbstreit became a very busy guy. He was announced as the new color commentator for Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime Video with Al Michaels. Also last year, Herbstreit agreed to an extension of his contract with ESPN to allow him to continue on GameDay, Saturday Night Football, and the NFL Draft, to go along with his new NFL duties for Amazon.

That double duty had to take a bit of a toll on him. That is three high-level positions that each require attention to detail and lots and lots of preparation. Herbstreit promises this year he’s going to take it a little easier. He’s had a year to get to know the ins and outs of the NFL and has created a nice chemistry with Michaels and the crew on TNF.

Before this season started, Kirk Herbstreit was asked about how he’ll approach this year as opposed to last. His comments appeared in the New York Post in August.

“I’m gonna chill,” Herbstreit said. “Last year, I know I was taking on something that was kind of unprecedented, really, doing an NFL game on a Thursday and then doing a three-hour ‘College GameDay’ studio show at a national level, and then calling a Saturday night game. There’s a lot of preparation.”

A year of doing the “tripleheader”, Herbstreit realized the importance of time management and taking some “me” time too.

“The execution of the actual job and those three gigs for me is fun, if I’ve done my prep, and I’ve built my entire career on being prepared, and having all the answers, and what I learned is I didn’t get to go to dinner with Al, Kaylee [Hartung] and our entire crew enough,” Herbstreit told The Post. “Or just go get a workout. I cannot tell you how much I prepared, because I didn’t want to let anyone down, including myself.”

HERBSTREIT/CONTROVERSY

Just Google, “Herbstreit, controversial comments” and get ready to spend some time looking at articles. It seems to me that most of the time he’s saying something controversial, it is because he loves the game of football so much. That passion makes him passionate and sometimes emotional. It’s raw commentary, coming from the heart, but it’s unfiltered which opens him up to criticism from time to time.

This passion comes out in every broadcast, whether it’s on the set of GameDay or in a booth as a game analyst. Make no mistake, Kirk Herbstreit will tell you what he thinks. His words can stir up emotions in others, like coaches and fan bases. He delivers his commentary without worrying about how they may or may not be taken.

One example of such commentary, on New Year’s Day in 2022, Herbstreit made some strong statements on players who don’t compete in their team’s bowl game, because they don’t mean anything.

“What’s the difference as a player when saying these games are ‘meaningless’ when, Des (Desmond Howard), we played in ‘meaningless’ games,” Herbstreit said. “I mean, I know you guys were here a lot. I just don’t understand. If you don’t make it to the playoff, how is it meaningless to play football and compete? Isn’t that what we do as football players? We compete?” Herbstreit said. “I don’t know if changing it or expanding it is going to change anything. I really don’t. I just think this era of player just doesn’t love football.”

Of course, that sparked a heated debate on social media. Some fans agree and think players need to be thankful they can play another game. Others think players having agency over their own futures is a good thing. It prompted Herbstreit to clarify his position on social media that same day.

“Just wanted to clarify some of my comments from earlier today. Of course, some players love the game the same today as ever,” he wrote on then Twitter. “But some don’t. I’ll always love the players of this game and sorry if people thought I generalized or lumped them all into one category.”

Polarizing, or controversial thoughts aren’t always a bad thing in sports. They certainly grab headlines, get attention, and get people talking on both sides of the issue. But, if you’re going to make the statements, you have to own them and at times walk them back. Herbstreit does.

WHY IS HE SO GOOD

I’ve already mentioned one of Herbstreit’s best qualities and that’s his passion for the sport. Any play-by-play announcer will tell you that an analyst who loves the sport he’s calling makes for a great broadcast. Herbstreit combines a knowledge of the teams he’s calling and an ability to make sense of things that take place during the game. Not every former player has that ability.

Kirk Herbstreit is a guy that fans either seem to like or really do not like. While he may come across as a little cocky at times, I don’t think he really acts like the all-knowing analyst he’s accused of being by some. I’m a fan of the way he teaches the game and goes in-depth on plays that happened. There is nothing ‘routine’ about the way Herbstreit calls a game. If you’re expecting the same ‘run of the mill’ commentary or answers, you’ll be disappointed. Viewers aren’t though, because Herbstreit deals in reality and if it’s a bad play, he’s going to tell you and explain why.

He and Chris Fowler are a great team, each gets the best out of the other. I’ve enjoyed watching Herbstreit with Michaels as well. It can be intimidating for an analyst to work with a long-time, big-name play-by-play guy, but he elevates to the occasion. You can hear the enjoyment, even when he’s being critical, from Herbstreit during a game broadcast. A play-by-play announcer can feed off of that energy in trying to match it. When the analyst takes it to the next level, the PBP announcer will as well. That makes for a great partnership and broadcast.

DID YOU KNOW

Herbstreit met his wife Alison at Ohio State, where she was a cheerleader. They were married in 1998 and have four sons.

Herbstreit was featured prominently in How We Lookin’?, a documentary about the life and career of longtime Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman.

He will be inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame this winter for his broadcasting of the game. Kirk Herbstreit never got a chance to play in the game, he will be calling his 16th Rose Bowl Game, which is the most ever, coming up on January 1st, 2024.

JJ Redick: Broadcasting NBA In-Season Tournament is a Chance to Document History

0

Group play in the NBA In-Season Tournament is set to commence on Friday night with a prime-time matchup between the New York Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks on ESPN at 7:30 p.m. EST. The game broadcast will feature the new secondary broadcast team of play-by-play announcer Ryan Ruocco and color commentators JJ Redick and Richard Jefferson.

The NBA In-Season Tournament, which concludes with the semifinals and championship game taking place in Las Vegas, will be a new opportunity for the network to help launch a new aspect of the Association.

“I think this is really important, but also I think the people we have doing this are the right people to be doing it in front of the camera and behind the camera,” Tim Corrigan, ESPN Vice President of Production said. “Our bar is our bar, [and] we wouldn’t make excuses for anything we’re going to do. We’re coming out and trying to be great in the production of these events and the documentation of these events.”

JJ Redick is part of the new secondary broadcast team on ESPN, which the network’s head of studio and event production Dave Roberts called a “succession plan” prior to the regular season. Even so, he has called games with the broadcast crew on numerous occasions in the past, and feels comfortable working alongside his colleagues.

“I look at every game as a documentation of history, and in this case, I’m documenting the first ESPN broadcast of an In-Season Tournament game,” Redick said. “Last week, I was documenting [Victor Wembanyama’s] debut; in the playoffs, you’re documenting a playoff game. I look at every game as a unique sort of opportunity to talk about and view something that I dearly love.”

When the In-Season Tournament was initially announced by the NBA, it was met with some skepticism and pushback from fans; however, as the structure of the proceedings has become more clear, many basketball fans are looking forward to the event and seeing how their teams will fare against the opponents on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Redick does not understand the skepticism surrounding the games since they count towards the regular season and explained that he will likely continue to be himself on the air, providing his shrewd insights and esoteric knowledge regarding the sport.

“You get to the quarterfinals, you get to the semifinals, [and] finals – those are events,” JJ Redick said. “Those are going to feel like an actual playoff game, and look, if it doesn’t work, I’ll probably talk about it.”

The NBA announced the broadcast schedule for the quarterfinal, semifinal, and championship rounds of the In-Season Tournament earlier today. ESPN will carry the first game of the semifinals on Thursday, December 7th, along with a broadcast of the championship matchup on ABC on Saturday, December 9th.

Shan Shariff: John Smoltz is ‘Depressed Without Joe Buck’

0

When the Texas Rangers took a 10-0 lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 4 of the 2023 World Series, 105.3 The Fan hosts Shan Shariff, RJ Choppy, and Bobby Belt noticed that there was a near three-minute period where FOX Sports analyst John Smoltz did not speak. Instead, play-by-play announcer Joe Davis continued to keep viewers informed regarding the action in the game, which ended by the final score of 11-7.

Shan Shariff started the segment by reading theories that were sent to the station from listeners, trying to formulate a reason why Smoltz is being perceived to have an aversion to the Rangers, including a theory that the team employs Dayton Moore, who moved Smoltz to the bullpen during his final season with the Braves.

“Then you have a very common theory that he’s just trying to keep it entertaining for people to watch in an already abysmal World Series from a ratings standpoint,” Shariff said, referencing results from the first three games on FOX Sports.

Game 3 of the World Series was the least-watched on record, averaging a total of 8.13 million viewers. Co-host RJ Choppy did not think that theory made sense prior to Tuesday night, which was 10-0 by the end of the third inning after consecutive five-run frames by Texas.

“If you look outside of DFW and Phoenix, the amount of people that are watching this series nationally, he probably feels like he was doing it to nobody anyway,” Choppy said of Smoltz. “I get last night – last night from that standpoint – because he was worse last night than ever, than any point in this playoff run.”

“My other theory is he’s depressed without Joe Buck,” Shariff said. “Not that he hates Joe Davis; he just misses Joe Buck.”

Smoltz started working with Davis in the lead MLB on FOX broadcast booth last season after Joe Buck and Troy Aikman signed with ESPN to call Monday Night Football. In addition to his role with NFL coverage, Buck had been the lead voice of the MLB property with FOX and worked with John Smoltz in his latter years with the network.

“That clip right there had the most laughter I’ve heard from John Smoltz throughout the entire playoffs,” Shariff said in response to Smoltz’s amazement at the Rangers’ offensive performance. “He just sounds tired.”

Pat McAfee, Rece Davis to Host NFL RedZone-Style College Football Broadcast Saturday

0

Pat McAfee has tried his hand a alternate broadcasts. He’ll sample a new format this weekend alongside Rece Davis.

The ESPN duo will host an NFL RedZone-style broadcast of college football Saturday evening, McAfee revealed Wednesday.

“Rece Davis will be with us here in the Thunderdome for our next MegaCast simulcast on Saturday night. That’ll be a take on RedZone, the college football frenzy, college football primetime,” McAfee explained.

“Basically, every game that’s happening on Saturday evening, we will be cutting in and out of whenever things heat up. Now, if it’s a little bit dry and games get a little cold, but it will need some highlights from earlier in the day.”

McAfee continued by noting that the program “will basically be everything you need to know from the college football day that was, inside the primetime games that are happening. That’s the vision. We’ll see if we can execute it. We can’t wait for it. It’s a beautiful time to be alive.”

Davis is set to host College GameDay from Tuscaloosa Saturday morning before hosting the Saturday night event with McAfee live in Indianapolis.

NBA In-Season Tournament TV Schedule Revealed

0

The NBA has announced the broadcast schedule for the league’s inaugural In-Season Tournament, with group play games set to begin on Friday, November 3rd.

Each team will participate in four of these matchups, which will be played on seven Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the month of November. The team with the best record from each group, along with one Wild Card team from each conference, will advance to the quarterfinals, all of which will be broadcast on TNT and streaming live on Max.

Quarterfinal games will be played in NBA team markets, with two games taking place per day on Monday, December 4th, and Tuesday, December 5th. The exact start times of these matchups are to be determined. However, the early game will start at either 7 or 7:30 PM ET, while the late game will commence at either 9:30 PM or 10 PM ET.

The semifinals occur on Thursday, December 7th from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will include a doubleheader to determine the championship matchup. Semifinal play begins at 5 PM with a matchup on ESPN, while the second game takes place at 9 PM ET on TNT. On Saturday, December 9th, the In-Season Tournament championship will be televised on ABC at 8:30 PM ET.

The In-Season Tournament, while currently being broadcast by ESPN, ABC, and TNT, is a new wrinkle within the season that could prove to be a factor in negotiations for a new television media rights deal with the NBA.

An exclusive negotiating window for the next media rights deal opens on March 9, 2024 and closes 45 days later, at which point other companies could choose to formally demonstrate interest.

Clip of Mike Valenti Throwing Chair in Frustration Goes Viral

0

Before the NFL Trade Deadline Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers traded for Washington Commanders defensive lineman Chase Young. 97.1 The Ticket’s Mike Valenti did not respond to the news lightly, with his reaction going viral on social media.

News of the trade came during The Mike Valenti Show with Rico Beard. After being told that a competitor to the Detroit Lions had landed the former number two overall pick, Valenti stood up, and threw his studio chair in disgust.

“What are we doing?!”, Valenti shouted after being told the news. He then turned his attention to Beard — a noted Niners fan — and shouted “Get your privileged ass out of here! Kindly leave! Leave! Out! Get out!”

Beard chuckled throughout the entire situation, asking “What did I do?” repeatedly.

“No one wants to look at you, no one wants to hear you,” Valenti angrily joked. “It’s him or me. Turn his mic off. Turn it off.”

Beard couldn’t contain his laughter, with several moments of dead air from Valenti.

“I just saw red when he said he got traded and it wasn’t to the Lions,” Valenti admitted. “And where did he get traded? Oh wait, your team. And you’re wearing red.”

Video of Valenti’s reaction was captured and posted to social media. The video garnered hundreds of thousands of views.

The clip was also shared by 97.1 The Ticket’s Jim Costa also shared the video with a trio of laughing emojis.

First Take Records Second Most-Watched Month in Program History

0

ESPN morning program First Take continues its streak of year-over-year viewership growth, recording the 15th consecutive month of growth.

With an average of 544,000 viewers, October marked the second most-watched month of the program in its 16-year history. Throughout the month, the show included various appearances by Shannon Sharpe, Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo, and Kimberley A. Martin, along with a variety of rotating analysts. The show is hosted by Molly Qerim and features Stephen A. Smith daily.

The program added Sharpe after his departure from Undisputed on FS1, which continues to feature Skip Bayless and a rotating lineup of analysts. ESPN senior coordinating producer, Antoine Lewis, was part of the network’s recent round of employee layoffs and a longtime leader of the program.

Coordinating producer James Dunn currently oversees the program and helped with Sharpe’s immersion into the lineup, along with other aspects of First Take. The program began adopting the “Stephen A. vs. the World” debate format after Max Kellerman departed the show in September 2021.

Elon Musk: I Bought Twitter Because It Was ‘Having a Corrosive Effect on Civilization’

0

Elon Musk returned to the Joe Rogan Experience for a conversation that covered a variety of issues stemming from his involvement with SpaceX to Tesla and Twitter, now referred to as X. During the two plus hour conversation, Musk went into detail on why he chose to spend 44 billion dollars to purchase Twitter, and addressed some of the key challenges the platform dealt with under prior leadership.

When asked by Rogan what ultimately led him to choose to buy the platform, Musk shared that he felt Twitter was doing more harm than good.

“This is going to sound somewhat melodramatic, but I was worried that it was having a corrosive effect on civilization,” revealed Musk. “It was just having a bad, bad impact. Part of that is where it was located, which as you know is downtown San Francisco.”

Musk explained how the the platform’s approach had become influenced by people who shared a different type of philosophy from most of the world. He called San Francisco-Berkley one of the most far left places on earth, and though he viewed San Francisco as a beautiful city, the area surrounding the company had become a zombie apocalypse.

He shared that Twitter’s prior regime was essentially given an information technology weapon which was used to inject a mind virus into the rest of the world. He added that the public was not aware of how much control the government had gained over the platform labeling it a state publication. Musk added that Republicans and views to the right and middle of the road had become censored by a 10 to 1 margin.

A large part of the discussion then turned towards the importance of free speech. Musk explained why it’s vital to protect the first amendment and shared that there had been severe violations by multiple government agencies which warranted repercussions.

Rogan asked Musk if he felt all media groups were working closely with the government, which Musk said yes, adding that X is the only social media platform not beholden to them. When Rogan asked Elon if he felt that extended to TV and print outlets, Musk raised an interesting question.

“It is weird to the degree with which the media is in lockstep”, Musk pointed out. “Why doesn’t the media question the government? They used to. Why don’t they do that anymore? Something doesn’t add up.”

Musk was asked how he manages to juggle overseeing three important, complex companies that require full focus and skill. He acknowledged that it’s a lot for a human brain to handle, which led to Rogan following up by asking what he felt Twitter was actually worth when he bought it. Musk responded with an answer which has since made the rounds across social media.

“Everything,” said Musk.

After Rogan applauded him for taking the risk and stepping up to make a difference for society, Musk explained that he felt many were being ostracized and shut down, and he felt it was critical for a social media platform to exist that didn’t cancel people. After Rogan remarked how hard it is to build a new platform, highlighting the quick rise and disappearance of Threads, Musk added “Zuck himself doesn’t post. You’ve got to use your own product.”

The rest of the conversation included Musk’s views on George Soros, Covid, the past and future of Mars, and much more. To hear the full conversation click here.

Darren McKee Joining Altitude Sports Radio for Middays

0

Altitude Sports Radio 92.5 FM has announced Darren McKee as its new midday host, joining the already-established Tyler Polumbus and Scott Hastings.

The addition was announced on the Denver sports station Wednesday morning.

“Say you’re dating a girl, theoretically, right? And she’s got a younger sister. And that sister, you don’t think much about it. I feel like the girl that I was dating, her sister grew up to be Miss Universe,” McKee joked after the announcement was made on Moser, Lombardi, and Kane. “And now I dumped the sister.”

The Denver host joins Altitude Sports Radio as the station eclipsed Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan in the Nielsen ratings for the first time in the previous quarter. The station garnered a 5.3 share in the men 25-54 demographic. Meanwhile, 104.3 The Fan earned a 4.5 share.

Darren McKee is a Denver sports radio mainstay, spending the past 24 years on the air in Colorado. McKee — affectionately known as DMac on the air — was let go from Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan in mid-September as part of a lineup shuffle.

He steps into the role previously held by Josh Dover at Altitude Sports Radio, who departed the station to join 104.3 The Fan to partner with Brandon Stockley from 10 AM-2 PM.

“We are excited to add Darren to our new and improved midday P.H.D. Show,” said KSE Radio’s Senior Vice President & General Manager Dave Fleck. “He is a respected member of the community whose work ethic and passion for broadcasting will help take our radio stations to new heights.  Having DMac as part of Altitude Sports Radio, allows us to reconfigure our daily lineup while adding a great voice to the station.”

The new Altitude Sports Radio host joked that he’s being brought in to bring the average height of the program with Polumbus and Hastings, who each stand at 6’8 and 6’10, respectively.

Polumbus, Hastings, and DMac will air weekdays from 12-3 PM.
